The Cheyenne East girls program is quickly moving into dynasty status. Each and every year, the Lady T-Birds seem to be at or near the top of the rankings. And this season is no different. The Lady Thunderbirds confirmed the rankings with recent victories against the Cheyenne Central Lady Indians, the Lady Bolts from Thunder Basin, and the third-ranked Campbell County Lady Camels. In the rivalry game against the Indians, East got off to a slow start. Central seemed to force the pace of the game, and it paid off for them, as East led by only three points at half. But the T-Birds came alive in the second half, running away with a 58-41 win. One of the more anticipated match-ups was in Gillette last weekend as the T-Birds met #3-ranked Campbell County. Despite a slow start, the T-Birds posted a 47-34 victory. Cheyenne East senior Bradie Schlabs then netted 21 points in a 59-35 win over Thunder Basin. A smothering defense held Thunder Basin to 12 points in the second half. The Lady Thunderbirds will head to Regionals on February 29 – March 2, and then the State Tournament on March 7-9. The Cheyenne East boys program has seen its fair share of challenges this year. Yet, despite injuries, setbacks, and travel, the Thunderbirds currently sit third in the state rankings, and they look to improve on that when it comes to tournament time. The February schedule opened with a game that always brings out the competitive fire – crosstown rival and #1-ranked Cheyenne Central. In what has become one of the best games every year, Central escaped with a 65-58 victory over Cheyenne East at Storey Gym. In a game of surges, evaporating leads, big plays, and pressure defense, Central seemed to always find a way to build just enough of a lead. After the T-Birds took a 7-4 lead in the first quarter, the Indians pulled out to a 15-8 lead. The second quarter saw the Thunderbirds storm back,

but again Central posted just enough to hold on to a 31-30 lead into halftime. In the second half, things stayed close, with both teams pushing each other with tough defense and aggressive offense. East was paced by senior Cam Hayes’ 21 points and five rebounds, but the T-Birds dropped the game, 65-58. Last weekend, seniors Drew Jackson and Cam Hayes both scored 16 points to help East to a 70-55 victory over Campbell County in Gillette. Against Thunder Basin, despite senior Nathan Mirich’s team-high 17 points, the Thunderbirds took a 51-41 loss. The Thunderbirds will head to Regionals on February 29 – March 2, and then the State Tournament on March 7-9.

Speech and Debate shines at local, regional and national events

Despite the chill this winter, East High speech and debate has been on fire since hosting the largest speech and debate tournament in the region, the annual Holiday Classic, an event that drew over a thousand competitors from four different states. In January, the team competed in Wyoming, Colorado, and California, earning top placings and winning sweepstakes left and right. History was made at the Martin Luther King Jr Invitational, a prestigious tournament that boasted over 100 schools from 10 different states. Seniors Ella Goodman and Clara Kerschner earned 2nd and 3rd place respectively in Informative Speaking, senior Solomon Henderson placed 5th in Program Oral Interpretation, and seniors Josh Thompon (2023 NSDA National Champion) and Ben Woolsey earned 5th in Duo Interpretation. This showing broke all records for the team and bodes well for what might yet be possible this year at nationals. The team will compete for qualifying spots in late February, and it will have the opportunity to defend its WY State Championship title in March at Laramie County Community College.

Crime Stoppers Silent Witness

January 5, 2024 — Assistance Investigating Vehicle Burglary

Cheyenne Police Department is requesting assistance identifying the two pictured subjects. They may have information regarding a vehicle burglary and credit card fraud case. The victim’s vehicle was left inside of an open garage, unlocked, with valuables inside. Security camera footage shows a suspect entered the garage and stole several items, including a credit card, which was then used to make unauthorized transactions, totaling over $7,000. Detectives believe that the man may have a tattoo of a rose on his left hand. Anyone with information or surveillance video of these crimes is encouraged to contact Detective Webster at 307-633-6692.
