The principle of earning your wings comes from a handful of key values. Attitude, commitment, selflessness, unity, enthusiasm, and accountability are just a few of the traits of an East High student. Each year the school selects a motto to promote throughout the year. These mottos are to remind students and the community of what being a Thunderbird means.

The Thunderbirds found themselves down early, as Central picked up three early wins. The T-Birds answered back with two big wins, including a pin by Liam Fox at 145 pounds. The teams then exchanged pins, putting the Thunderbirds up 21-18, highlighted by a fall by East’s Jason Zahm at 170 pounds. Zahm’s pin pushed the T-Birds out front and on the way to victory.

In the final six bouts, East earned two pins, while the Indians mustered one, and the Thunderbirds took the dual with a 36-30 win.

Central’s girls picked up a 15-6 victory over the East girls to start the night. The T-Birds points were all earned with a pin from senior Elizabeth Grube at 135 pounds.

One week earlier, in a dual against the Sheridan Broncs, the wrestling seniors were honored with a special night. Each of the seniors was asked to walk to the center of the mat with his parents as their thoughts, thanks, and accomplishments were announced to the crowd.

Because of surgery, senior Seth Scott was unable to attend. In his place, close friend and East wrestling senior Trevor Eldridge joined the Scott family in the place of Scott. The family included Seth’s sister, freshman cheerleader Taylar Scott, who gratefully hugged Eldridge, bringing a few tears in the crowd. By being there for the family,

Eldridge displayed a positive attitude and demonstrated a positive and emotional act of caring. He more than earned his wings.

Speech and Debate Senior is Leaving a Trail of Success

While it’s not uncommon to see a Thunderbird step up and help a teammate, being a good teammate also means taking the lead and encouraging others to reach for the stars.

Senior Danielle Schulz has certainly done that, and more, putting in the work over four years as a speech student to earn the national title she had her eye on.

The team competed in The MASQ (Making Art while Socially Quarantined) Virtual

Regional in early February, and the T-Birds made a statement.

Top finishers included Schulz and Davin Ro placing first and second respectively in Individual Sweepstakes, Davin Ro with the win in Humor, and Rachel West earning the title in Poetry.

“It feels amazing, I mean I put in a lot of work to get the title, so I was really proud of myself for getting there,” said Schulz. “I had so much help from the coaches and really put the effort in this year, so it means a lot to me. I just managed to get enough points in this past tournament.”

As a student of a parent who is also one of the team’s coaches, Schulz says she felt she had a little extra pressure to deliver, and she undoubtedly did, earning her wings and a national title.

Coming together as a community means being positive, enthusiastic, and hardworking, along with supporting each other in the case of adversity and struggle. That’s how East students earn their wings every day.

The public is welcome to attend. Jones will talk about how eBird, the world’s largest citizen science project, is a powerful resource for birders and ornithologists alike. This presentation will include best practices for submitting checklists, using eBird to explore data and plan birding trips, the data review process and how your eBird observations are being used by researchers in Wyoming. Charles “Charlie” Rogers 1931-2014

Charles Matthew Rogers, 92, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at his home in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Charles was born Januar y 30, 1922 to Scott and Cheska (Michel) Rogers in Chicago, Illinois, the oldest of four children. He graduated from Whitney M. Young Magnet High School in 1941

Charles served in the U.S. military in WWII as a medic. He met his beautiful bride and wife of 65 years, Kate Angelie Johansson, in the war and they were later married in Springfield, Illinois

In 1960, Charles began his lifetime career in the automotive industry, moving to Chicago 2 years af ter, where he managed a Honda dealership. He managed the same dealership company another 30 years until his retirement in 1992. Apar t from managing his company, Charles enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He loved to go fishing, hiking, and bowling whenever he had the time. He also spent most of his years volunteering at the local community center Charles is survived by his wife Kate; daughters, Emma (Andrew) Smith and Scarlet (Tony) Ford; son Anthony (Pearl) Rogers; grandchildren, Joshua Smith, Ellie Ford, Joey, Talia, and Julia Rogers; brothers, Manuel and Chad Rogers; sisters, Kathr yn Perr y, Catherine Jones and Kayla Smith; cousins Joseph, Jeffrey, Felix, Hanna, and Amy; and numerous nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his parents and older sister, Amy Wilkinson.

Funeral ser vices will be held on Friday February 21 2014 at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church at 1:00 PM with Reverend John DioGiovanni of ficiating. Burial will follow at Lakewood Cemetery The family will greet friends from 3:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at Turner and Washburn-McReavy Funeral Chapel in Minneapolis. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul United Church or the Hear t Society of America. Those wishing to sign the guest book may do so through his son, Anthony, by calling 555-5555.
