Charles “Charlie” Rogers

1931-2014

Charles Matthew Rogers, 92, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at his home in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Charles was born Januar y 30, 1922 to Scott and Cheska (Michel) Rogers in Chicago, Illinois, the oldest of four children. He graduated from Whitney M. Young Magnet High School in 1941

Charles served in the U.S. military in WWII as a medic. He met his beautiful bride and wife of 65 years, Kate Angelie Johansson, in the war and they were later married in Springfield, Illinois

In 1960, Charles began his lifetime career in the automotive industry, moving to Chicago 2 years af ter, where he managed a Honda dealership. He managed the same dealership company another 30 years until his retirement in 1992. Apar t from managing his company, Charles enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He loved to go fishing, hiking, and bowling whenever he had the time. He also spent most of his years volunteering at the local community center Charles is survived by his wife Kate; daughters, Emma (Andrew) Smith and Scarlet (Tony) Ford; son Anthony (Pearl) Rogers; grandchildren, Joshua Smith, Ellie Ford, Joey, Talia, and Julia Rogers; brothers, Manuel and Chad Rogers; sisters, Kathr yn Perr y, Catherine Jones and Kayla Smith; cousins Joseph, Jeffrey, Felix, Hanna, and Amy; and numerous nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his parents and older sister, Amy Wilkinson.

Funeral ser vices will be held on Friday, February 21, 2014 at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church at 1:00 PM with Reverend John DioGiovanni of ficiating. Burial will follow at Lakewood Cemetery The family will greet friends from 3:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at Turner and Washburn-McReavy Funeral Chapel in Minneapolis. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul United Church or the Hear t Society of America. Those wishing to sign the guest book may do so through his son, Anthony, by calling 555-5555.

The Cheyenne South High cheer team took a trip to Orlando, Florida to compete at UCA Nationals. They competed in the Small Game-Day Non-Tumbling Division, and out of 40 teams,

Rescheduled Cheyenne Audubon Field Trip

The public is welcome to join Cheyenne Audubon members for a free birding field trip Saturday, February 25, to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge. After a tour of the visitor center in Commerce City, Colorado, participants will drive the refuge’s loop road looking for bison, prairie dogs, bald eagles, other raptors and other wintering birds. Silent Witness Crime of the Week

The Cheyenne Police Department is investigating a recent surge of burglaries where criminals are targeting valuable items left inside of vehicles.

In the past 30 days, we have received more than 50 reports of these incidents throughout Cheyenne. In over half of these cases, vehicle windows were broken, while others gained access through unlocked doors.

Officers are contacting persons of interest and detectives are actively pursuing leads. We encourage citizens to exercise caution anytime vehicles are left unattended. Do not leave valuable items or firearms inside of parked vehicles and always remember to lock up.

Additionally, video evidence can be very valuable in these investigations‚ we recommend installing surveillance cameras in a location that captures parked vehicles. Anyone with information or surveillance video of these crimes is encouraged to contact the detective bureau at (307) 637-6513.

Zonta Club Seeking Applicants

Applications for the 2023 Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Award are now available from the Zonta Club of Cheyenne through its website www.cheyennezonta.org. Deadline is March 15. The goal of the YWPA Award Program is to encourage young women to participate in public affairs by recognizing a young woman’s commitment to the volunteer sector. The recipient of the club’s award will be awarded $1,500. Their application will then be sent to Zonta District 12 and be reviewed for another possible $5,000 reward. The application for the YWPA award along with instructions for submission may be found on the Zonta of Cheyenne website at www.cheyennezonta.org. The local award recipient will be selected no later than April 1.

Cheyenne Kiwanis Club Foundation Grants

The Cheyenne Kiwanis Club Foundation’s 2023 grant cycle opened February 1. Non-Profit 501(c) (3) organizations are invited to apply for funding support. The Foundation’s purposes are to support children’s programs in the broadest sense, followed by human services, to assist needy persons, particularly young people, to assist worthy youth in attaining vocational excellence, and to aid handicapped persons in regaining useful lives. Registration Open for Girls’ Fast-Pitch Softball

Teamwork, fundamentals and friendly competition are on deck for the upcoming Girls’ Recreational Fast-Pitch Softball program this summer. The program will feature age divisions ranging from 8u-18u. Players must be no younger than seven and no older than 18 on June 5. Registration is open until Thursday, March 30, and late registration will run from Friday, March 31, to April 13.
