Laramie County School District 1 seventh through 12th grade art students were given the opportunity to showcase their creativity by creating art inspired by music.

Students were provided with a song selected by

the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra to serve as inspiration for an original work of art. This year’s selection was Crouching Tiger Concerto for Cello and Chamber Orchestra by Tan Dun.

The artwork captures what the students heard and felt while listening to the piece. The art was judged by community members based on how the music was portrayed using different art mediums.

A LYREBIRD is a ground-dwelling bird of Australia. They are famous for their ability to mimic both natural and artificial sounds from their environment. Also, somewhat like the PEACOCK , the males fan their large tails in a courtship display. LYREBIRDS were first discovered by Europeans in 1798. It is one of the world’s largest SONGBIRDS LYREBIRDS eat many insects including EARWIGS. They also eat AMPHIPODS – crustaceans that have no shell. An age-old technique to use for 21st century research, how a timeline can help you with your family history. “Introducing the Timeline Grid,” is a free, educational program presented by the Cheyenne Genealogical and Historical Society on Tuesday, March 12, in the Cottonwood Room of the Laramie County Library, 2200 Pioneer Avenue. The gathering begins at 6:15pm with a short business meeting followed by the program at 7:00pm. The program will be presented by Melanie Bosselman, former Director of the Cheyenne FamilySearch Center with a specialty of using technology in the quest of family history. She will demonstrate and explain the Timeline Grid, which is a research tool that makes it easy to track your research results and easily identify missing information and more. Registration is not necessary for this program, which is open to the public.

The Dawn Chorus: Birdsong ID

Investigating Vehicle Burglary

Cheyenne Police Department is requesting assistance identifying the two pictured subjects. They may have information regarding a vehicle burglary and credit card fraud case.

The victim’s vehicle was left inside of an open garage, unlocked, with valuables inside. Security camera footage shows a suspect entered the garage and stole several items, including a credit card, which was then used to make unauthorized transactions, totaling over $7,000.

Detectives believe that the man may have a tattoo of a rose on his left hand.

Anyone with information or surveillance video of these crimes is encouraged to contact Detective Webster at 307-633-6692. Registration Open for Girls’ Fast Pitch Softball

Teamwork, fundamentals and friendly competition are on deck for the Girls’ Recreational Fast Pitch Softball program this summer, and registration is now open. This program will feature age divisions ranging from under 8 to under 18. Players must be no younger than 6 and no older than 18 on June 5, 2024. Registration is open until March 28 at a cost of $65 per player. Late registration runs from March 29 to April 11. All registration closes after April 11. Practices begin May 13 and regular season starts June 5. Volunteer coaches are also needed. Chicken Curling Tournament

Back for its ninth year, Cheyenne Ice and Events Center’s Chicken Curling Tournament is set for 2024, and registration is now open for the event. Chicken curling is exactly what it sounds like — the sport of curling, but with donated, expired frozen chickens instead of stones. Teams of four compete to win the contest in a double elimination format, and spectators are encouraged to attend. The 2024 Chicken Curling Tournament will be held at the Cheyenne Ice and Events Center, 1530 West Lincolnway on Saturday, March 23 at noon. Registration is open until Wednesday, March 20. Teams must have four members, all over 18 years old, and are encouraged to come up with a witty name and may wear costumes to the event. Teams should contact Bailey Miller at bmiller@ cheyennecity.org to register and for information.
