NuVision Federal Credit Union Thunderbird Speech and Debate continues run to State title By Thunderbolt Staff As they’ve done all year, East High Speech and Debate rolled into another tournament and came away victorious. Only this time, the tournament meant a little more. For the second year in a row, the team has earned the title of State Champion. The annual tournament, this year held in Riverton on March 7-9, featured schools from across the state. “This year is unique,” says coach Marcus Viney. “Every competitor on the state team earned points toward the sweepstakes total that put us above all the other teams.” In addition to the team title, the Thunderbirds scored with three State Champion teams in Public Forum debate, completing the rare feat of shutting out the rest of the state in that category. Thunderbird senior Maeve Knepper was voted, by the Wyoming Speech and Debate community, as State Student Ambassador of the Year. Students who placed in the top three:

Boys Indoor Track takes third at State with two individual titles By Thunderbolt Staff

Two individual champions paced the Thunderbird Boys Indoor Track team to a 3rd place finish at the Wyoming Indoor Track Meet, held in Gillette on March 1-2. Dakota Merritt and Jefferson Danso each earned 22 team points for the Thunderbirds. Merritt placed in the 200-meter run, long jump, and the 4x200 meter relay. He earned the state title in the 400- meter run, finishing in 50.68 seconds. Danso placed in the 55-meter hurdles, the high jump, and the 4x200 meter relay. He earned his state title in the triple jump, recording a more than 47-foot jump. The girls’ team was paced by Amira Cummings 16 team points. She placed in the 55-meter dash, pole vault, and the 4x200 meter relay. Thunderbird Basketball falls short at State Tournament By Thunderbolt Staff No one plays a sport to lose. No one puts in hundreds of hours of practice for second place. Every real competitor wants to win. No one goes into a season planning to fall short of their goals. The Thunderbird girls and boys basketball ended one of the most successful seasons in Thunderbird history by falling short at the Wyoming 4A State Basketball Tournament. The two teams combined for an overall final program record of 49-8, with the girls earning 27 of those wins. After being ranked as one of the top two teams in the state all season long, the boys basketball team (22-5) had no other expectations than a run at a state title. They entered the state tournament on a mission. After losing to Sheridan in the Regional championship, 79-57, they were seeking revenge. The T-Birds got their chance at revenge, only it wasn’t for the state title. In the semi-final games of the tournament, the T-Birds stumbled against Kelly Walsh, and Sheridan was upset by Campbell County. This set up the rematch, but now it was for pride and third place in the state. In the team’s final game, the T-Birds seemed to be on their way to a big win,

leading 11-9 at the end of the first period, but Sheridan then used a 17-0 second quarter run to eventually take the win, 73-61. On the girls’ side of the tournament, no one was surprised to see the Lady Thunderbirds in the championship. While they had stumbled in the regional tournament, falling to Campbell County, they had posted the best record in the state, 27-2 entering the title game, and had played with a sense of purpose since December. In the state tournament, the Lady Thunderbirds snuck past Kelly Walsh in the first round and then took revenge on the Lady Camels, 62-58, in the semi-finals. On the other side of the bracket, Thunder Basin rolled through Green River and Star Valley and waited for East in the championship game. In the championship game, East jumped out to the early lead, but things unraveled in the second quarter. The Lady Thunderbolts posted a 23-4 scoring run going into halftime, and the Thunderbirds couldn’t recover. While East made a few runs in the second half, Thunder Basin played arguably their best game of the year, taking the championship, 70-58.

Attitude and effort make all the difference at State Cheer By Thunderbolt Staff In the heat of a battle on the court or field, through the ups and downs of all sorts of seasons, one group always remains loyal to their school and teammates – the cheer squad. East High’s cheer team is well-known for their school spirit, their efforts in the community, and competing against the very best. At the State Cheer competition, held in Casper on March 6, the Thunderbirds took home third place in both the Game Day and All-Girl Cheer. Two trophies might seem like a good day, but the coaches and cheerleaders know they have so much more potential. “You always want more,” said coach Emili Brooksmith, in an interview with www.wyosports.net. “We’re always striving to get first place, but sometimes it just

doesn’t happen. Cheer is a subjective sport, and we’re going to put out the best routines that we possibly can, but knowing it’s a subjective sport, we’re going to come out here and do our best and walk away with our heads held high.” While the coaches believe this is a team on the rise, they don’t have time to sit around and enjoy the moment. They are ready to help with spring sports and then roll right into summer training for the next competition. Look for the Thunderbirds to hoist gold in the future.
