Speech and Debate tackles the 4A championship

The speech and debate team won the 4A state championship at the 2023 Wyoming State Speech and Debate Tournament. East hosted the event and won with a record number of sweepstakes points and five individual state champions and multiple state runners-up.

East also qualified thirteen students for the national tournament in June. With seven more competitions coming up, due to weather postponements, the team estimates they will qualify 20 for nationals.

Earlier in the season, senior Danielle Schulz was named Wyoming State Speech and Debate Student Ambassador, a title that recognizes excellence, courage, and advocacy in the community. Schulz currently ranks number one in the nation overall and ranks in the top three in her events nationwide.

Rachel West, another multi-season state champion, is number one in her events in the nation. Coach Marcus Viney also earned the 2023 4A coach of the year award.

There is no speech and debate team in Wyoming history with similar results as this season.

“We were ecstatic,” comments Viney. “We won the state championship which I know means the world to these kids. They put in the effort, and it shows.”

East High state champions were Ella Goodman (Informative), Dani Schulz (Drama and PIO), Zcherina Villegas (Oratory), and Rachel West (Poetry).

Record setting performances pace Indoor Track

No one is surprised to find East High track athletes standing on the podium receiving first place medals. What isn’t so common is finding the same athletes on the podium for multiple events. Two Thunderbirds recently won individual championships at the Wyoming Indoor Track State Championships, and they were victorious in multiple events. To top things, two relay teams also scored gold.

Dom Kaszas scored gold in the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, while teammate Taliah Morris earned titles in three events, including the 55-meter dash, 200-meter dash, and long jump.

Kaszas took first in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.57 seconds, and then followed that performance up with a 22.79 to win the 200-meter dash.

Morris won the 55 meter and 200 meter dash with times of 7.19 and 25.55 respectively. She then topped things off with a long jump of 19 feet 2 inches.

The boys 4x200 relay team of Ethan Brinkman, Dom Kaszas, Jude Guevara, and Marik Cummings earned gold in their race. The girls 4x200 team of Emma Smith, Mikaila Trujillo, Ynes Ronnau, and Sydni Sawyer earned a championship as well.

Over the course of the season, three athletes posted record setting performances.

Dom Kaszas tied the school record in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.51.

Marik Cummings bested Kaszas’s time in 6.50. He then set the bar even higher with a 6.49.

Taliah Morris set new school records in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.19 and the 200-meter dash with a 25.55. She also established a school record in the long jump of 19 feet 4 inches and a state record of 19 feet 2 inches. State records are only recognized from marks at the State Meet.

Boys Basketball takes home the championship

The boys’ basketball team started out the season at the top of the 4A rankings. After only losing two regular season games, and the regional championship game, the Thunderbirds stormed their way through the state tournament, beating Laramie 68-59 for the state title.

Beating a team three times in one season is never easy, so the Thunderbirds knew finishing the season 4-0 against Laramie would be a challenge.

East finished the championship game with four players in double figures. Garet Schlabs scored 18 to pace the T-Birds, while Drew Jackson posted 17, Nathan Mirich had 14, and Camden Hayes scored 12.

The players credit Coach Rusty Horsley and his mantra of hard work. The importance of getting better was stressed every day in practice.

“My advice for future players would be to work hard at practice, listen to the coaches, and don’t

make Coach Horsley angry,” comments junior forward Camden Hayes.

Girls basketball finishes an impressive season in third

The girls’ basketball team spent the season as clearly one of the best teams in the state. Continuing a winning streak started in 2021, the girls ran off 48 wins before dropping a tight game to Douglas. They entered the state tournament with high expectations of a championship.

Before the state tournament, the T-Birds stumbled in the Regional championship game, losing to Thunder Basin. That gave them the East #2-seed heading into State.

At State, the Thunderbirds made short work of Star Valley before falling to the West’s #1-ranked team, Cody. In the third game of the tournament, the Thunderbirds took down Sheridan, 47-42, to finish in third place.

“This season was great,” says coach Eric Westling. “I thought our kids grew and played really hard. We had a really good tournament at state but ran into a tough Cody team, but either way I was proud of our girls and how they stuck together. I am extremely proud of our seniors for their entire basketball careers as well as who they’ve become outside of basketball.”

The Ice and Events Center will host its 8th Annual Chicken Curling Tournament Saturday, March 25! Teams of four will complete in a double-elimination format as they chuck their way to chicken curling glory! Mayor’s Youth Council Accepting Applications

Applications are being accepted for community-minded young people interested in learning more about city government, civic trusteeship and community leadership. To join the 2023-2024 Mayor’s Youth Council, students must be in grades 9th-12th and reside in Cheyenne. The 2023-2024 term will begin in June 2023 and conclude in May 2024. The selection committee will review the applications and interview selected candidates. Registration Open for Girls’ Fast-Pitch Softball

Teamwork, fundamentals and friendly competition are on deck for the upcoming Girls’ Recreational Fast-Pitch Softball program this summer. The program will feature age divisions ranging from 8u18u. Players must be no younger than seven and no older than 18 on June 5. Registration is open until Thursday, March 30, and late registration will run from March 31 to April 13. The Cheyenne Kiwanis Club Foundation’s 2023 grant cycle opened February 1. Non-Profit 501(c) (3) organizations are invited to apply for funding support. The Foundation’s purposes are to support children’s programs in the broadest sense, followed by human services, to assist needy persons, particularly young people, to assist worthy youth in attaining vocational excellence, and to aid handicapped persons in regaining useful lives. Digital Skills for Seniors

The Wyoming State Museum is now accepting registration for their free Digital Skills for Seniors (Android Users) course. Space in the class is extremely limited; it is recommended that interested students sign up as soon as possible to reserve their place. The eight-week course gradually introduces digital skills that older adults can apply to their everyday lives. Focusing on Android smartphones and tablets, each class builds on the skills learned in the previous lesson and includes one-on-one assistance and practice. Participants can bring their own device from home or borrow a tablet from the museum for free. Spring Android course begins on March 28, and ends May 17. Class meets on Tuesdays from 2:00pm-3:30pm.
