East High School News Thunderbirds make a statement for the winter sports season

It can’t be argued that East High has established itself as one of the best schools in the state. Whether in the classroom, on the stage, or on the field, the Thunderbirds are most often found at the top. The winter sports season just reinforced that belief. Our indoor track team brought home a championship in the girls 4x800 relay and posted a new school record in the process. The wrestling program once again found itself battling for top billing, bringing home a 4th place team finish, while the boys basketball team faced top quality competition all season and earned a 2nd place trophy at State. The girls basketball team started winning during the 2021 season, and without flinching once, continued their dominating ways to an undefeated season and winning it all, again!

Indoor track sets a record and wins a title

a first half that ended with East leading 14-9, the T-Birds finally got their offense on track as junior 3-point specialist Boden Liljedahl scored 15 of her game-high 17 points in the second half. “Honestly,” said senior Kiera Walsh, “it’s [being back-to-back state champs] kind of what we were planning and expecting for the whole year, but to do it with this team is so amazing. I couldn’t ask for a better team to be able to do it with.”

Very few people compete at anything without dreaming of being the best. And if you’re good enough, and maybe lucky enough, you’ll go down as the greatest of all time! The girls indoor 4x800 relay team did just that! The team, consisting of sophomores Ynes Ronnau, Emma Smith, and Kendra Upton, and junior Mikaila Trujillo, set a school record of 10:07.59, and then promptly bested that at the state meet with a 9:55.52. The most amazing part of this record is the team’s ages - three sophomores and a junior. Four underclassmen shouldn’t be besting senior-heavy teams. “Knowing that history was made from a team that I was on as a junior is incredibly awesome to me,” continues Trujillo. “Some athletes do the sport and when they graduate, they go without leaving an impact on the school for the next set of athletes to come in.” Trujillo has been a top runner for the past two years, and this group gives her a step up for her senior year. “Knowing that we have a record set that will stay when we all leave is an amazing thing because it shows all the work we’ve put in. I wouldn’t change the way my season went. I had to deal with some unfortunate injuries that impacted my season and how many events I was able to compete in. But staying in and not taking time off, when I probably should have, resulted in a state championship, so I believe it was all worth it.” Now the challenge is to see what these girls will do next year.

Girls basketball repeats as state champions

It’s not often you find a freshman champion on the wrestling mat, but the Thunderbird’s Liam Fox did just that. He rolled through the 2022 season with 52 wins against 6 losses and finished with a championship. In a battle of underclassmen, Fox defeated Laramie sophomore Dakota Ledford 7-1 to win the 132-pound championship. Ledford took a 1-0 lead with an escape early in the second, but Fox pulled ahead with a takedown with five seconds left in the second period. Fox scored another takedown with 21 seconds remaining in the final period and then added a three-point near-fall as time expired for the 7-1 win. Foix wasn’t alone in the championship round as senior Cade Pugh placed second in the 152-pound class, and senior Gavyn Aumiller took second in the heavyweight class. The team finished in fourth place, continuing the tradition of finishing in the top ranks on the mat.

Boys basketball powers its way to the title game

At the 4A basketball championships this past Saturday, the undefeated East High Lady Thunderbirds earned the title of Back-to-Back State Champs. After going nearly undefeated last season and winning the 2021 championships, the Lady T-birds entered this season with high expectations. “I think getting to know the newer girls and the new add-ons and learning how we all flow together as a team was really essential for this year,” said senior center Darcy Jardine. “[We] also tried to remember who we are and tried not to listen to all the hype around us and just put in the work.” In the opening round of the state tournament, the Lady T-Birds first faced Rock Springs and promptly dismantled the Lady Tigers, 62-24. They then took down Natrona County, 64-46. In the championship game, they faced off against the Cody Broncs, who had cruised through the west conference season undefeated. The Lady T-birds secured their win with a final score of 51-41, ending Cody’s undefeated streak. The Thunderbirds, who finished the season with a perfect 28-0 record, limited the Fillies to 12-of-35 (34.3%) shooting, including 1-of-13 (7.7%) in the first half. Thunder Basin kept their lead throughout the game, beating East 52-42 and securing the title of state champs. “A key [to beating Thunder Basin],” said sophomore Drew Jackson, “would be to stop their three-point shooting. They’re a really good three-point shooting team, and they play really good defense. They’re a well-rounded team and they would’ve been tough to beat.” Although East lost at the championships, they spent the season sitting in the top five ranked teams in class 4A, finishing with a 22-6 record, with three of those loses being to Thunder Basin. “We worked really well as a team,” said senior Aleczander Hardy. “We always worked really hard. We never took a team too lightly, and we played really good defense too.” The boys plan to return to the championships next year to take care of unfinished business. “I think that they have a really good chance next year because our team was pretty young this year,” says Hardy, addressing the experienced and talented underclassmen. “So they’re just going to improve and get better.”

LCCC Spring Roundup Horse Show

The Laramie County Community College Ranch Horse Team will host their 2022 Spring Roundup Ranch Horse Competition with Slidin’ Daze Enterprises on March 18-20, in LCCC Arena, 1400 East College Drive. “The competitions encourage horsemanship and skills required on a working ranch and are an opportunity for students to showcase the techniques they have been working on all year,” said Morgan Moreno, LCCC’s Ranch Horse Team Coach. During the three-day competition, riders will compete in reining, ranch riding, ranch trail and working cow horse classes. This regional competition will feature competitors from multiple states and include both a collegiate and open division. Collegiate will begin Friday at 12:00pm and Saturday at 8:00am. The Cheyenne Animal Shelter and Pine Bluffs Distilling are excited to announce registration and Millionaire Row tickets are open for the annual Corgi Derby. This event will incldue several waves of Corgi races and one “Mutt Race” open to five contestants of any breed.
