Spaghetti Bumper Crop Expected According to latest reports from the BBC, Switzerland can expect an unprecedented bumper crop of spaghetti this spring. A mild winter, and the almost total elimination of the spaghetti weevil are credited for keeping the famous Mostaric pasta trees healthy and thriving. As soon as the last of the snow melts in the Linguin valley, thousands of pasta harvesters will take to the orchards to gather the millions of straw-colored, tender, supple noodles. Spaghetti from this region is the most sought after by classically trained chefs across the globe. Does any of this sound familiar? Happy April Fools’ Day, everyone! Some of you may recall that a similar story was actually released by the BBC for April Fools’ Day in 1958. According to CNN.com, this is the number one April Fools’ Day prank of the modern era. Did you fall for it? I’m sure you know that spaghetti doesn’t grow on trees, but when you see a report by a legitimate news agency in this volatile day and age, admit it; you may have actually considered the legitimacy of such as a story, even if for just a second! We have all played April Fools’ jokes on our friends and family. We may have told our little sister she had a huge zit on her chin just before a big date, or pointed out that our best friend has toilet paper stuck to their shoe. So how did all of this fun get started. As with many holidays of this type, the real truth, if it actually exists, is buried in legend and speculation. April Fools’ Day is no exception. According to The History Channel, one theory is that it originated in 1582 when France switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar. Some French citizens failed to recognize that the beginning of the year moved from the last week of March to January ďŹ rst. As a result, those unfortunate souls became the butt of multiple jokes and hoaxes, such as pasting a paper ďŹ sh on their back to symbolize a gullible person, and therefore an easy ďŹ sh to catch. Another version of the day’s origin is that on the Vernal Equinox, or the ďŹ rst day of spring, Mother Nature fooled people by producing unexpected, unspring-like weather. Yet another theory links the day to the ancient Roman Festival Hilaria, which was celebrated at the end of March, and involved citizens dressing up in disguise. No matter how this day of hoaxes, jokes, and fun at others’ expense came about, it’s deďŹ nitely enjoyable to participate in harmless pranks. Here are some other notoriously well-known pranks from the last 100 years, beginning with Sports Illustrated magazine running a story in 1985 about a pitcher named Sidd Finch who could throw a fast ball at 168 mph. The man would likely dislocate a shoulder if he really could throw like that! Who remembers what Taco Bell did in 1996? They announced that they had purchased the Liberty Bell and planned to rename it the Taco Liberty Bell. Many citizens actually fell for that! In 1998, Burger King announced that they were introducing a left-handed whopper to make it easier for lefties to eat. Thousands of people jumped on board! A bread store that I used to frequent had daily bread specials with unique avors such Reuben bread, and white chocolate raspberry bread, just to name a few. One April 1st they advertised a Spam and Velveeta bread. I love Spam and Velveeta, and to have them together in a bread sounded like a little taste of heaven! However, when I called to place my order, I was politely informed that the store was just having a little bit of fun with their customers, and that no such bread existed. Well, I felt foolish, but the nice young man on the phone assured me that I wasn’t the only one to fall for it, and that he actually thought they should add such a bread to their baking schedule! What a polite young man, although he probably couldn’t stop laughing after he got off the phone In any event, I thought we could all use a little humor during this time of uncertainty. In March 2019, the Gospel Jam-Cheyenne began. The Jam featured mainly older Gospel songs played in a Country or Bluegrass style. Musicians of all skill abilities were invited. Those who just wanted to sing-a-long were provided songbooks. With a simple ad, the first Jam saw 14 musicians volunteer their time and talent to bring “a joyful noise unto the Lord.� The last Sunday of every month, 10-16 musicians would come to the Cross-T Cowboy Church where they would play, while the “followers� would enjoy lunch. The Jam became an event many looked forward to and never missed. The following became musicians became “Regulars:� Ben and Margene Z. guitar and singer, respectively. The never missed one monthly Jam! Nancy McK. (mandolin) was our 24/7 musician, making time in her busy schedule for practices, meetings, and the Jams. Bill B. (steel guitar, banjo, etc.) was at every Jam he could make - as was his mother! Sheryl S. (bass) never missed practices and Jams - She was always ready to go the extra mile! Sharon M. (violin) got a surprise during the 5th Jam when a female guitarist from Colorado came, looked across the room and recognized her as someone she had attended high school with in Ft. Collins, many years earlier. Other guitarists came and helped bring joy to all ages: Earl J. (retired), Dan M. (former pastor-Harriman), Dooley S. (medical technician), Jeanie W. (Gideon Bible Rep.), Ray D. (professional musician), Jim C. (retired) and many others. Come out to the Gospel Jam when it resumes and meet the musicians they’re very approachable! And if you want live music for an event, the JAM is a great place to “hook-up� with extremely talented musicians. Gospel Jam Cheyenne Canceled The Cheyenne Jammers are saddened to have to cancel the monthly Gospel Jam, regularly scheduled for the last Sunday of each month. Due to President Trump’s and Governor Gordon’s request that no more than 10 persons congregate together, the JAM is “on hold.â€? Last month, the Cheyenne Jammers were joined by four Colorado musicians and one from Nebraska. Three of the four Colorado musicians, Ben, Carl and Kirk are guitarists.
