The Laramie County School District 1 Report to Stakeholders | Cheyenne, Wyoming

Students gain life skills in speech and debate

aramie County School District 1 provides students with a multitude of opportunities to showcase their learning and talent. According to South High teacher Tyler Will, speech and debate is offered at all three high schools. He said students are invited to participate in the class or become involved as an extracurricular activity. “I would describe speech and debate as a laboratory for language arts and for social studies,” Will said. “You think of all the things you want students to be able to do when they graduate including the ability to communicate clearly when speaking and writing. It allows students to practice everything they are supposed to be learning in language arts classes” Students who wish to participate in speech and debate are not required to enroll in the class. Although there are no prerequisites, Will said because it is classified as an after-school activity, there are codes of conduct they must follow. Will said speech and debate has a set curricu-

lum and it covers traditional language arts and performance standards required by the Wyoming Department of Education. “It supercharges everything the students are learning in the classroom,” Will said. He said students write their own speeches and compositions throughout the year. Half of the class assignments deal with writing and the other half deal with speaking in front of their classmates. Before participating in debate, students are required to learn about current events. Will said they are asked to dig into issues related to government policy or even some more contemporary technology issues. One thing his students looked at was crypto currency. “It’s always interesting to see students come into the program, because some of them are already really comfortable at the beginning and others are timid,” Will said. “We usually try to start with pretty low stakes. During public speaking at practice, we ask students to share what they like, their hobbies or something they are very comfortable with that helps build the time they are in front of people.”

Will said as students get more comfortable with speaking, the topics they are asked to talk about become more difficult. Students participate in drills including tongue twisters and memorizing historical speeches to help them become more comfortable with speaking in front of people. He said it not only fits in with academics but allows students to compete outside of school. “One of the nice things about speech and debate is that when you go to a competition, it is not just one event it’s a bunch of different events,” Will said. Half of every tournament is comprised of debate competitions. Students can do individual debates, team debates or congressional debates where they simulate being a part of the U.S. Congress. Will said when competing in the debate portion, students are required to source their information. They can show their source or provide a link to their source. Will said the Wyoming High School Activities Association provides a handbook that outlines requirements for format-

He said students can specialize in one event or participate in multiple events during the competition. “It gives you confidence to do something that most people are terrified of doing,” Will said. “If you can get over that hurdle as a high schooler, when you enter college or the workplace, you are set up to be a leader.” Will said students who take speech and debate gain the ability to take charge, present information, conduct research, be organized and communicate. “If you look at the number of people in Washington, D.C. or in professions like consulting and law, the number of people who have gone through speech and debate is astonishing,” Will said. “There is no better professional training for anything students might want to do than the general skills and confidence that you get from speech and debate.” —Text by Creighton Grove

Researching Allen’s Gold Mine

A gold mine for family history research, that’s the Genealogy Center at the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Cheyenne Genealogical and Historical Society is having a free program on Tuesday, April 12, called “Researching Allen’s Gold Mine” starting at 7:00pm in the Cottonwood Room at the Laramie County Library, 2200 Pioneer Avenue. He will share his knowledge of the workings of the library and will discuss online resources available to distance users as well as why one might want to journey to Indiana to do family research in the library. LCCC to host Grammy Winning Chanticleer

The Laramie County Community College Foundation will host the Grammy award winning vocal ensemble Chanticleer on Sunday, May 1, at 7:00pm, in the Surbrugg/Prentice Auditorium on the LCCC Campus, 1400 East College Drive. The performance, sponsored by the LCCC Foundation’s ANB Bank Performing Arts Series will be the groups second performance in Cheyenne and part of their 2022 tour. Chanticleer has been hailed as “the world’s reigning male chorus” by the New Yorker and is known around the world for its wide ranging repertoire and dazzling virtuosity. They have a twofold mission: one is to make the government account for all POW/MIA Americans from all wars and bring them home.
