East High School News Despite COVID-19 temporary closure East High continues work By Thunderbird Staff “As of today, the district believes we will be open next week, but we need to prepare for remote learning,� Mr. Sam Mirich, East High principal, told his teachers during a staff development meeting on the morning of Friday, March 13. By 5:00 that evening, district personnel received an email from Dr. Boyd Brown, LCSD1 superintendent, informing them “Laramie County School District 1, using an abundance of caution, will be following Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon’s recommendation to limit large community gatherings and events of more than 250 people.� And then, less than 48 hours later, it
was ofďŹ cial – school was closed until further notice. COVID-19 has arrived. And with it, a new way of learning. Teachers are now prepared for a new way of teaching - remote learning - and classes started on April 6 for all LCSD1 students. Teachers are employing multiple means of teaching, from on-line video to Canvas to printed packets. If any parents or students have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your school. Thunderbird Cheer locks up trophies at State competition Two groups that can be counted on to bring the spirit to Thunderbird Nation are the EHS Cheer and Dance squads. No matter what, the cheerleaders and dance team members are ready to always give the school a lift. The teams headed to Casper on March 11 to compete in the 2020 WHSAA State Spirit Competition. Thirteen teams competed in the 4A Game Day competition, while eight battled it out in Co-Ed, All Girl Cheer and the Hip Hop dance category. In front
of a packed Casper Event Center, and after nearly seven hours of competition, the Thunderbirds earned third place trophies in Co-Ed, Game Day, and All Girl Cheer and ďŹ nished as one of the best in the state. “It’s always a nice day when you bring home hardware,â€? said East coach Emili Brooksmith. “We’re just super proud of these kids.â€?
Basketball dreams dashed as WHSAA cancels State Tournament In what may turn out to be the Wyoming sports story of the year, the Wyoming High School Activities Association, amid fears of the coming COVID-19 virus, shocked basketball teams across the state, shutting down the 2020 Class 3A and 4A state basketball tournaments in mid-March. No one was more disappointed than the East High boys’ and girls’ teams. The girls ďŹ nished their season with a state-best 22-3 record, won their regional tournament and entered the state tournament as the #1-overall seed. Senior guard Ky Buell was voted Class 4A girls basketball player of the year by the Wyoming Coaches
Association. She averaged a 4A-best 21.3 points per game. It’s her fourth recognition for all-state. Senior Madison Blaney also earned all-state honors. Led by a strong class of seniors, the boys team spent the better part of the season ranked in the top two in the state and rolled into the post-season expecting titles. The boys ended the regional tournament in 3rd place, but never got a shot at the state title. The boys saw seniors Xavier McCord and Chance Aumiller and junior Graedyn Buell named to the all-state squad. The Thunderbirds ďŹ nished 20-6.
Spring sports in limbo as Coronavirus precautions delay play As of March 28, and on recommendation of Governor Mark Gordon and the Wyoming Department of Health, the WHSAA extended the suspensions of all school spring sports and activities. According to the WHSAA website, “We will extend the suspension of spring sports until Monday, April 20th. So that everyone will be on an equal playing ďŹ eld, there will continue to be NO PRACTICES during the suspension. “Due to the continuing inuence of COVID-19 we are not able to predict when it
will be safe to resume spring sports. We will continue to be guided by the Government of Wyoming, including the Wyoming Department of Health and the State Department of Education.� The WHSAA also announced the canceling of the State Art Symposium, the SkillsUSA State Leadership Conference, the all Spring District Music Festivals, among others.
EHS FFA takes honors at Sheridan Border Wars Competition The East High Frontier FFA team traveled to Sheridan on March 9 to compete in the annual Border Wars. The Sheridan College Agriculture Department hosts the event as a “regional contestâ€? to help prepare FFA teams for the upcoming FFA State Convention. Squared up against 17 teams from across Wyoming, South Dakota, and Montana, the Agricultural Sales and Service team ďŹ nished tied for 1st place and was awarded 2nd after tie breaker criteria. The team is made up of Janelle Grant, Ella Hayes, Cameron Sutton, and Haylie Turley. Each member takes a written test and then tries to “sellâ€? a product to the judge. The ďŹ nal stage of the contest is a presentation to a perspective customer, with heavy judging based on how well the team works together. The Environment and Natural Resources Team competed against 13 teams from Wyoming and Montana and ended in 2nd place. Members of the team are Chance
Butler, Challeni Riddle, Hayden Hancock, and Breah Rosner. ENR team members complete a written test in general land and animal management, compete in an identiďŹ cation contest, complete a GPS activity, map out a plot and determine acreage, test and sample land and water, form a waste management plan, and, ďŹ nally, give a scenario to make recommendations to a rancher to solve a problem or help to manage the land/ wildlife in the area. “I am extremely proud of both the Sales and ENR teams,â€? says Joe Allen, FFA adviser. “These kids have been working extremely hard. I am extremely excited to see what the future holds as they all head into competing at state FFA, and more importantly, how this can help them in their future for school and careers.â€?
East artists earn Kurz-Andrews scholarships Two East students won the top two awards at the Kurz-Andrews scholarship art competition in early March. Senior Mika Reyes earned top honors, while senior Keeda Vankirk placed second. The work was judged on creativity, successful use of media, the ability to write a coherent and interesting artist’s statement, and intriguing and creative sketches and ideas for further work. The Kurz-Andrews Scholarship is sponsored by the Cheyenne Artists’ Guild and recognizes the best college-bound seniors who plan to pursue art in college. Students display their ďŹ ve best pieces and submit a statement describing their inter-
pretation and intent of the work. “This competition is the ďŹ rst opportunity that senior artists have to display their artwork publicly, and they hang it by themselves,â€? says Sarah Krank, EHS art instructor. “It is really their ďŹ rst art show as seniors. It takes a brave spirit to put one’s work up for critique and evaluation, as it can feel like a critique of the artist rather than the art. The creativity and ability of these two artists is strong, and I knew they would sweep the competition. They can both be very proud of themselves.â€?

German students shine at UW World Languages Day Eight students from the East High German program traveled to Laramie on March 7 to compete against students from South, Campbell County, and Thunder Basin high schools. The University of Wyoming hosts the annual event in order to give the students an opportunity to show off their German-language skills. The group participated in cultural activities sponsored by the University of Wyoming Department of Modern and Classical Languages. Students also had the opportunity to visit with representatives from all the language courses offered by the University of Wyoming.

Earth Day, 2020 Wednesday, April 22nd is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the largest single secular observance in the world. This year’s theme is climate action, a pressing topic amidst ongoing discussions of climate change. It’s hard to Unofficial Earth Day Flag imagine that Earth Day has been around for 50 years. The ďŹ rst Earth Day was held on April 22nd, 1970, primarily in the United States. Today, activities are coordinated by the non-proďŹ t organization, Earth Day Network, with events and celebrations held in over 190 countries worldwide. Early Earth Day celebrations centered around recycling, and efforts to clean up the planet. This is still a huge part of Earth Day, but there are now multiple components to the festivities, including science and emerging technology, which involves collecting data to measure air and water quality, as well as pollution levels. Another component is advocacy. Earth Day groups are working with global policy makers, as well as local and regional governments in order to reach a broad audience. Volunteering has always been essential to Earth Day, and this year is no exception, although due to the spread of COVID-19, it may look a little bit different this year. Education is key to the success of Earth Day. It’s important to build environmental awareness and literacy, not only through Earth Day events, but also year-round education. So how will this Earth Day be different, and what can each of us do to promote a clean planet? The many rallies and community events planned, will for the most part, become virtual gatherings. Students, citizens, government representatives, and even celebrities are expected to participate. Volunteers are still encouraged to clean up their own neighborhoods while practicing social distancing. The Earth Day Network is also working with groups worldwide to plant 7.8 billion trees, one for every person on the planet. The Wyoming Arts Council is seeking music from Wyoming musicians for the 2020 Summer Road Trip Playlist. This is a statewide call open to independent musicians of all genres. Fraudulent Services Due to COVID-19 Pandemic The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, OfďŹ ce of Inspector General and OfďŹ ce of Investigations issued a healthcare fraud alert, regarding the agency’s receipt of COVID-19 complaints. This alert noted that fraudsters are offering COVID-19 tests to Medicare beneďŹ ciaries in exchange for personal details and are targeting the beneďŹ ciaries in several ways. The personal information collected may be used to fraudulently bill Federal health care programs and the unapproved test kits may cause harm to the beneďŹ ciaries. What are severe complications from this virus?
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus that was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak in Wuhan, China.
Some patients have pneumonia in both lungs, multi-organ failure and in some cases death.
Can people in the U.S. get COVID-19? Yes. COVID-19 is spreading from person to person in parts of the United States. Risk of infection with COVID-19 is higher for people who are close contacts of someone known to have COVID-19, for example healthcare workers, or household members. Other people at higher risk for infection are those who live in or have recently been in an area with ongoing spread of COVID-19. People can help protect themselves from respiratory illness with • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
If you are sick, to keep from spreading respiratory illness to others, you should • Stay home when you are sick. • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
What should I do if I recently traveled from an area with ongoing spread of COVID-19? If you have traveled from an affected area, there may be restrictions on your movements for up to 2 weeks. If you develop symptoms during that period (fever, cough, trouble breathing), seek medical advice. Call the office of your health care provider before you go, and tell them about your travel and your symptoms. They will give you instructions on how to get care without exposing other people to your illness. While sick, avoid contact with people, don’t go out and delay any travel to reduce the possibility of spreading illness to others.
What are the symptoms of COVID-19?
There is currently no vaccine to protect against COVID-19. The best way to prevent infection is to take everyday preventive actions, like avoiding close contact with people who are sick and washing your hands often.
