Schlabs and Jackson post 1,000 points to lead their basketball teams to State

Ask anyone and they will tell you Thunderbird girls basketball is a dynasty. It takes special coaches and players to do what they have done since 2017 - three state titles. And 2024 was supposed to be another banner for the gym. After spending the majority of the season at the top of the rankings, the Lady TBirds fell short of their goals and finished in third at State.

One of the brightest spots of the season was the play of Bradie Schlabs. In 2023-2024, she posted her 1,000th point and was named All-State for the fourth time. The team closed out the season with a 26-4 record.

Responding to adversity was the theme of the 2023-2024 boys basketball season. From losing their all-state guard, Drew Jackson to a concussion, to stumbling in the first game at Regionals and then again at State, this team just kept battling. At State, they overcame a slow 11-minute stretch to post a 65-54 win over Jackson in the Class 4A fifth-place game.

In mid-January, Jackson was recognized for posting the 1,000th point of his career. He will join the Wyoming Cowboy football program in the fall as a preferred walk-on.

Girls and boys wrestling shine at State Tournament

Both boys and girls wrestling programs made a strong showing at the State Tournament, with the boys team finishing in 3rd and the girls team placing 6th.

On the boys side, Trace Eldridge (106 lbs.) placed 5th, Sammy Sanchez (113 lbs.) earned 2nd, Benjamin Whitright (120 lbs.) brought home 3rd, Kolby Williams (132 lbs.) placed 3rd, Bobby Mathews (165 lbs.) took 6th, Jason Zahm (175 lbs.) placed 4th, and Hayden Van Dell (215 lbs.) earned 5th.

Three boys earned the title of state champ. Liam Fox (150 lbs.), Colby Olson (190 lbs.), and Charlie Green (285 lbs.) all took a trip to the top of the trophy stand and accepted championships. Liam Fox earned his third title in three tries.

For the girls, Bree Padilla (100 lbs.) placed 6th, Kaelyn Ronnau (155 lbs.) earned 2nd, Gracin Goff (190 lbs.) placed 2nd, and Joci Davis (235 lbs.) finished in 4th place.

East High girls wrestling made a statement on the national level when sophomore Kaelyn Ronnau pinned Lauren Garcia of New York, in 3 minutes, 8 seconds, to capture fifth place in the girls 152-pound bracket at the National High School Coaches

Thunderbirds Burst Into Spring

Association national tournament, on April 7, in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Azyln Silva, Ryauna Nepomuceno, and Halley House also competed in Virginia.

East High SkillsUSA chapter takes care of Thunderbird Seniors

Caroline Di Senso, Allie Wagner, and Charli Cameron brought the Cheyenne community together by creating, documenting, and promoting the community service project Sponsor a Senior to benefit East High’s seniors in need.

Starting in early November of 2023, members of East SkillsUSA reached out to several local businesses to help support this cause. Local businesses had the opportunity to donate money, services, and more! East High faculty members also contributed by donating prom tickets and yearbooks. In total, the Cheyenne community was able to donate over $7,000 worth of items.

The money provided two dorm essential baskets, containing comforters, sheets, dishes, detergent, cleaning supplies and more. Hygiene baskets were also made for both males and females. One basket contained school supplies and technology items. A local salon, Artistry 33 Hair Company, donated three haircuts. Members also created three bundles of essentials, including prom tickets and yearbooks. A local western boutique, The Desperado Boutique, donated a prom dress and fitting for a senior in need.

In total, 26 seniors were touched through the Sponsor a Senior community service project.

On March 4, East students traveled to the World Language Day Competition in Laramie, where the Thunderbirds made a strong showing, sweeping nearly all the categories.
