East High Seniors Earn Scholarships as College Tuition tops $102,000

As the 2022-2023 school year comes to an end, the reality of “what’s next” hits a lot of seniors. With the national average of in-state college tuition now exceeding $102,000 for four years, and out-of-state now over $176,000, graduating seniors need to find ways to cover the cost of higher education.

One of the top ways to reduce the staggering costs for college is scholarships and grants. East High School’s College and Career Center works closely with juniors and seniors to help set a plan and find ways to reduce future expenses.

Two Thunderbirds were recently honored with major scholarships. Stockton Fertig and Kooper Taylor were named recipients of the Daniels Fund Scholarship.

According to the program’s website, “The Daniels Scholarship Program provides the opportunity for motivated students to attend the college of their choice. Daniels Scholars will receive up to $100,000 to be applied at any two- or fouryear, nonprofit, accredited college or university in the United States, depending on financial need.”

In March, the Daniels Fund announced the names of its 2023 class of Daniels Scholarship Program recipients. 38 Wyoming high school seniors were selected as 2023 Daniels Scholars. They were among 238 students across Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah accepted into the program.

“I heard about the scholarship from my counselor in my college preparatory course,” said Fertig. “I filled out the questionnaire, found out I got into the semifinalists, and it just took off from there. I can’t wait to go to Liberty University with the scholarship.”

With the highly selective nature of the scholarship, both Fertig and Taylor shared their surprise at not only being selected for the semi-finalists, but also at being two of over 200 applicants among the thousands that applied who received the scholarship.

“It was three rounds, so I was really nervous in between each one,” shared Taylor. “I did really well with the interview- it’s really important to just be yourself and be honest more than anything. It’s always been my motto that hard work really pays off and this proved that.”

Another highly competitive scholarship is QuestBridge National Scholarship, which focuses on A’s in high placement classes like honors and AP courses and generally being in the top 5-10% of the individual’s graduating class. The scholarship offers a full ride to

around 1,000 finalists out of over 17,900 applicants.

“I was very surprised to find out I won,” said senior Suzette Mejia. “I matched with Rice University, where I’m going to be going into biochemistry.”

Once admitted into the finalist round, students hoping to win QuestBridge have to apply early to a list of schools partnered with the scholarship, ranking their top picks. After winning the scholarship, students are required to go to the school that matched best with them.

Aside from academic scholarships, students like senior Delaney Wilson went for scholarships that catered to their strengths like the UNC portfolio scholarship.

“I had to present my art to a panel of judges who were walking around and talk to them about it,” said Wilson. “I brought my sketchbook with me, so I ended up showing them my process from it, which I think was part of why I won.”

Any seniors who are still interested in attending college need to stop by the College and Career Center for more information. There are still plenty of scholarships available. It’s also never too early for sophomores and juniors who plan to attend college to start setting a plan, not only for what school, but how to pay for it.
