Laramie County Community College News Capital City art Show awardS

The Capital City Art Show is a way for students in Laramie County to come together and experience each other’s art. Triumph high school participated greatly in the art show with 23 students entering their pieces into the show. Thirty-nine Triumph students took a field trip to support their fellow classmates and five students won awards from the Art Show. Among the five Triumph students was Theo Koonce, winning a $500-scholarship from the Cheyene Regional Medical Center. They were chosen based off their art

portfolio and written statement. “The Capital City Art Show was an opportunity for art students all over Cheyenne to come together as a community and show off their best work and Triumph’s art really stood out because of their creative approaches to art making.” Sara Willson said, Triumph’s Art teacher. Raiden Spangler, another Triumph participant, was awarded a VIP award given by State Representatives. “I would definitely enter the art show again, it was nice to have my art put out there and see appreciation for it.”

Every quarter, Triumph does a building-wide reading initiative. This initiative focuses on strengthening reading skills building-wide and integrating reading into advisement classes. This quarter Triumph is trying something new – book clubs. Each village in the building reads a different book and students were able to choose which book they would like to read. Sarah Horen, Triumph’s librarian, and Justin Earnshaw, an English teacher at Triumph, designed the initiative. “I think sometimes we focus so much on reading skills - we forget to also make reading fun. Many students in our building haven’t had positive experiences with reading in the past, so my hope with this reading initiative is that it allows students to have a fun, positive experience with reading while working on skill building and stamina,” Horen said. Horen and Earnshaw built a list of high-interest books. Advisors in each village selected the book they would like to teach and then students picked from the five different village choices. The books included a mystery, a graphic novel, a novel in verse, a biography, and a sci-fi thriller. “It was cool to get to choose which book I wanted to read, and all the choices were actually interesting books,” Johnny Perez, a THS

senior, stated. Students go to their book groups on Tuesday and Wednesday each week. “I’ve actually been looking forward to the days we get to read our book. The book my group is reading is getting really good and it’s hard not to read ahead!” Julian Toon said. Advisors had the choice of working with their small, assigned group of students, or joining groups within the village to work together. “I like how we do it as a group. My book is about the Holocaust and the first day one of our history teachers came in and he gave us a lot of background information, so that was cool. I like that my book is written from a woman’s point of view,” Audi Mendoza stated. Each week the groups also work on a reading skill or strategy, like questioning, predicting, summarizing, or interpreting. Horen and Earnshaw built a library of engaging resources focusing on these skills and teachers pick out one activity a week. “Our group’s book is a graphic novel, so this week we are going to work on summarizing by drawing our own comic strips,” Jen McKee, Triumph SPED teacher, shared. Book clubs are only in the second week but so far, the feedback from students has been positive. If the program goes well this year it will be utilized again sometime next school year.

Operation Zero! “Beyond the Battlefield”

Hell on Wheels Chapter - Wyoming is announcing their 6th Annual Operation Zero “Beyond the Battlefield.” This event will be held at American Legion Post 6, 2001 East Lincolnway on April 30. It will start at noon and continue until 5:00pm. The purpose of this event is help fund veteran suicide prevention programs such as the Veterans Crisis Line. Hell on Wheels Chapter - Wyoming is a nonprofit veteran’s club and is made up of all volunteers. They have a twofold mission: one is to make the government account for all POW/MIA Americans from all wars and bring them home. Someone who is bankrupt, in Scotland, was called a DYVOUR. Along with such words as ABY (also spelled ABYE, and means “to pay the penalty for”), it hasn’t been used in over 500 years. Up until modern times, people who owed money to others, or DEBTORS, had it tough. For example, in the 1600s in Scotland, if you were a debtor, you had to wear a coat that was half yellow and half brown, to identify yourself as someone who owed money. The Cheyenne Animal Shelter and Pine Bluffs Distilling are excited to announce registration and Millionaire Row tickets are open for the annual Corgi Derby.
