May Baskets: A May Day Tradition How many of you remember literally running home from school on May 1st, ready to put your May Baskets together, and deliver them to your hopefully unsuspecting friends, praying that you won’t get caught? I can remember the anticipation starting to build as soon as lunch was over. Students headed back to the classroom and took their seats, praying that the hands on the clock would speed up so that the fun could begin. We ďŹ dgeted in our seats through our teacher’s never-ending diatribe on the fundamentals of long division, followed by a ho-hum read-aloud of Silas Marner. Finally the 3:30 bell rings, we stuff our papers into our school bag, throw on our jackets, run down the stairs and out the door, and all the while the assistant principal is fruitlessly yelling at us to slow down and be careful. We heed him no mind. He’s just an old man who doesn’t fully appreciate the signiďŹ cance of the day and what is about to happen. We sprint all the way home, our minds racing with just how we’re going to decorate those paper cups, green strawberry baskets, or cut-off school milk cartons we’ve been hoarding for the last week. Of course we’ve already purchased pipe cleaners, ribbon and crepe paper for our masterpieces, as well as M&M’s, peanuts, Jolly Ranchers, Slo-Pokes, Circus Peanuts, and our other favorite candies. The popcorn was popped before school, and covered up until it will be needed. If we’re lucky, we’ll have access to spring owers for our masterpieces, even if we have to swipe them from Old Lady Martin’s garden. She’ll never know! Once home, and our school things thrown to the side, we line up our choice of basket materials, and with shaking hands, begin the assembly process. We want our baskets to be perfect. They may be for our best friend across the street, or our crush who lives two blocks over and one house down. The most creative of us will sew the blue, pink, green, and yellow crepe paper to the container, drawing it up to make lovely ruffles. Others will grab the standby Elmer’s glue to hold the design in place. Ribbon bows will be added, and for those paper cups, we drag out the scraps for our Crayola 64 box to add an original design. Finally, a yellow, pink, green, blue, red, or orange pipe cleaner will be poked through one side, then the other, forming the perfect handle for our basket. Next, we ďŹ ll them. We alternate the popcorn, M&M’s, and other candies as if we’re creating a DaVinci masterpiece. After all, we can’t be outdone by Sandy down the street! We are more careful with the owers. Don’t give the wrong ower to the wrong friend. The meaning has to be perfectly clear. Roses are out. They’re probably not even in bloom yet anyway. If we’re lucky we have an Iris, the granddaddy of May Basket Flowers, which of course, is inserted into the basket delivered to our crush. Most likely we will have tulips or dandelions, with the dandelions going to those friends to whom we deliver to, only because we want one from them to add to our grand total of candy. Now we’re ready for the strategic delivery process. We step outside and scout the neighborhood. Seeing no one near Susie’s house, she becomes our ďŹ rst target. Because of course the idea is to deliver the May Basket, ring the door bell and run. If you get caught by the person you delivered to, they get to kiss you, which can be good or bad, but mostly bad, unless you followed through with delivering the ultimate May Basket to the object of your crush. If that’s the case, you don’t want to play too hard to get, but you still need to run. You can leave a note as to who it’s from, or not, but I think most of us like to take credit for our work. Hopefully after you’ve made a few deliveries, without being caught, you’ll come home to ďŹ nd a few May Baskets on your own door step. When it’s all said and done, you can stuff yourself with candy, and everyone’s adventures will be the talk of the school the next day. This tradition has faded over the last few decades, but with today’s social distancing, maybe this would be a good time to bring it back. I would challenge all of you to leave a May Day surprise on your friends and neighbor’s doorstep during this time of social distancing. Crews from the City of Cheyenne Urban Forestry Division will be spraying spruce trees to prevent ips beetle infestation at several city parks and city-owned properties this week. Spruce trees will be treated on calm days to minimize the drift. Crews will need to spray the entire trunk and larger branches with an insecticide. Residents are being asked to stay away from spraying crews and avoid parking vehicles adjacent to trees being sprayed.
