Speech and Debate repeats as State Champs, and expects more

The EHS Speech and Debate team won the 2024 Wyoming State Tournament in early March, earning the team back-toback state champions. This year, the team achieved a resounding victory, leaving second place behind by over 30 sweepstakes points. State is a rigorous three-day competition that marks the end of a long and demanding season in Wyoming. Many of the competitors have devoted countless hours and weekends since October to have the opportunity to compete for top spots at this event and beyond. With events requiring 6-10 rounds of competition in front of critical judges and panels, the State meet alone asks students to speak more in one weekend than a college public speaking class does in an entire semester.

Following an outstanding showing at State, EHS students won the top three spots at the Optimist International Oratorical Competition (Level 1) in mid-March. The students wrote and delivered speeches about the power of optimism to change the world.

Junior Rosie Zubrod placed 3rd and won $100 scholarship. Senior Zcherina Villegas earned 2nd and won $200, and senior Josh Thompson took the top spot, earning $300 and the opportunity to move to the next level. Last year, 2023 graduate Dani Schulz advanced all the way to the competition in St. Louis and took home a significant amount of scholarship earnings.

Reminds Don’t Feed Horses

Visitors to Kiwanis Community Park are reminded not to feed neighboring horses or any other wildlife while on the park property. The City has received complaints about the issue and signs are posted at the park, which is located off East Pershing Boulevard. The horses near the park are on private property and feeding neighboring horses can disrupt their diets and cause serious health issues. Horses may also injure park visitors. As a reminder, dogs must be on a leash at all city-owned parks including Kiwanis Community Park.

Cheyenne Genealogical and Historical Society

On a stormy September night in 1923, Burlington’s train number 30 left the Casper depot for its overnight run to Denver. Less than an hour into the journey, disaster struck. Con Trumbell, author, archivist, and train engineer, will describe the tragic event through the eyes of those who were there as well as those who investigated the tragedy in the weeks that followed. He is the capstone speaker for the Cheyenne Genealogical and Historical Society’s year-end dinner and program, which will be held on Tuesday, May 14, at The Office Restaurant, 1600 East Pershing Boulevard. Guests are welcome for the program only at 7:00pm which is $5 and reservations must be made by calling Valerie at 307-631-0478.

Cheyenne Youth Symphony Spring Concert

The Cheyenne Youth Symphony will perform their spring concert at Little America, 2800 West Lincolnway, on Saturday, May 18, at 1:00pm. The concert, which is a fundraiser for the youth organization, includes a catered tea party and a silent auction. Cheyenne Youth Symphony is for all area students in grades 5-9 and has been a part of the Cheyenne community since 2000.
