East High wraps up another amazing school year

“Today marks the day where you start … the process of making those decisions about what kind of citizen [you] are going to be,” said U.S District Court Judge Alan Johnson.

South High School News Public Schools Chronicle

On March 15, East High School hosted fourteen Wyoming residents as they became naturalized as U.S citizens. The ceremony was attended by family members, state and local officials, school district officials, and EHS students. The East High JROTC presented the colors and the EHS choir sang the national anthem.

“It was long but very rewarding,” said East High senior and choir member Emma Mayfield. “I mean, these people worked hard to get their citizenship, so it was an honor to sing at the ceremony.” She called the event “emotional.”

Assistant U.S. attorney Jeremy Gross called for the naturalization ceremony to begin, and Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge for the District of Wyoming Kelly Rankin administered the oath of citizenship.

The newly naturalized citizens received their Certificates of Naturalization from the Wyoming Congressional Delegation and a round of applause from the students who witnessed the event. Many of the new citizens took an opportunity to speak with the audience about their experiences and thanked the officials and students for the experience.

Art and Photography students shine at art show

The East High art and photography departments pride themselves on producing top talent year in and year out. Carrying on that tradition, the departments stepped up this year, setting high bars for collective accomplishments.

Both departments spent the spring encouraging all artists to submit their work to the Capitol City Art Show in April. The Capitol City Art Show is a district-wide event, featuring artists from all four local high schools, and is an opportunity for young artists to show off a variety of mediums.

After an impressive showing at the district show, with East taking home more ribbons than any other high school, they prepared to go after state titles in Casper.

According to Nicole Cameron, EHS art teacher, 41% of East’s all-city art show pieces received ribbons and 71% of their State Art Show pieces received ribbons. What makes this even more remarkable is that only 20% of the artwork earns ribbons at each show.

Sophomore Kailey Smock earned the First Lady Award, meaning her artwork gets to be posted on the Governor’s social media. Continuing the winning streak, freshman Nyah Herrera

won the Congressional Award, which is the state art’s highest possible honor.

Senior Delaney Wilson was recognized as the top artist, receiving $19,000 in scholarship money, while senior Denali Bronder was recognized as the district’s top photographer.

The arts department wasn’t the only one to take center stage this spring. At the annual Solo and Ensemble Festival, all bands from East earned a superior rating after months of practicing and preparing their pieces.

Every student, regardless of experience, is required to perform a solo at the festival. Over a two-day period, over seventy students played the solo they prepared for over four months in front of a judge to receive a rating. Forty students received a superior rating while twenty-six scored an excellent rating.

“I’m really proud of our students,” said band director Aemalemalo Seui. “You can tell who put in the work because their scores reflected that. It was obvious that they wanted it.”

East High FFA scores state titles in multiple events

Continuing the winning trend, the East High FFA team made an impressive showing at the annual FFA State Convention held in Cheyenne in mid-April.

The team won the Leadership Sweepstakes for the first time since 2009.

Seniors Preston Anderson, Mikala Hall, Emma Heny, Savannah Schilling, Rachael Abraham, Haleigh Eiter, and Caytlin Heatherington also received a Wyoming FFA State Degree, which is only awarded to 5% of all state members.

Individual Thunderbirds also claimed state championships. Shelby Hoobler was awarded a state championship in the Agriscience Fair. Rachael Abraham, Charlotte Ehlman, Colton Schick, Savannah Schilling, Hayleigh Either, and Caitlyn Heatherington earned titles in Agricultural Issues. Regan Allen won a championship in FFA Creed. And, finally, Brody Medina received a state title in FFA Talent.

Caytlin Heatherington was also selected as one of nine State Officers to serve the Wyoming FFA for next year. This marked the third year in a row that a Wyoming FFA State Officer comes from East.

Agriculture Education Instructor and FFA Advisor Joe Allen shared his excitement for the team’s success and next year’s challenges. “We had an absolutely fantastic year,” he says. “And I’m extremely proud of our kids.”

Spring Into Green 5k Run for Fun

The 14th annual Spring Into Green Fun Run is set for June 10 at 8:00am. This race is an annual fundraising event planned by the Cheyenne Greenway Foundation, which helps support the Foundation’s mission to improve the amenities along the 45-plus miles of the Greenway in the Cheyenne area. The 5k run will start at Cahill Park, and will be timed by Foot of the Rockies. Strollers and dogs on leashes are welcome, but please plan to start behind the pack. Water will be available at the start/finish line and 5k turnaround. If you have a refillable water bottle, please bring it to save on cups and waste. Awards will be given to the overall female and male winner, as well as first and second place female and male winners in the following age categories: 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70+.
