The Origins of Memorial Day Memorial Day: the unofďŹ cial start of summer. Traditionally a weekend of celebrating with friends and family. The smell of charcoal and sunscreen ďŹ ll the air. Although this year’s celebration will undoubtedly look different, we will still take to the great outdoors. Millions of Americans across the nation will also visit cemeteries in remembrance of family and friends gone before. After all, this is the true meaning of Memorial Day. The history of the holiday dates back to the Civil War when the ďŹ rst national cemeteries were established. The war ended in 1865, and by the late 1860s, many Americans began spring tributes to fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with owers. In May of 1868, General John A. Logan, commander-in-chief of the Union veterans’ group, issued a decree that May 30 should become a national day of remembrance for soldiers killed in the Civil War. He called it Decoration Day. By 1890, many Northern states adopted the holiday. After World War I, Decoration Day evolved to honor not just those lost in the Civil War, but to honor all American military personnel who lost their lives ďŹ ghting for their country. The holiday then became informally known as Memorial Day, and was still celebrated on May 30 until 1968 when Congress adopted the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, moving the holiday to the last Monday in May. The act went into effect in 1971, and also ofďŹ cially changed the name to Memorial Day. By Sarah Horen Like many things, graduation looks a little different at Triumph High School. Triumph graduates students who have met all requirements each quarter of the school year. Students are honored with Platform Graduation which is held in the school gym. It is a small, personal ceremony and is one of the things that makes Triumph unique. It is a time for students to share their favorite memories of Triumph, the lessons they’ve learned, and their plans for the future. At the end of the school year, students from all four platform graduations come back together for one big, traditional graduation ceremony. Due to school closures, Triumph’s third quarter platform graduation had to look a bit different this year. On May 1st, Triumph staff and families met

up and formed a parade line almost a mile long. The car parade drove past each third quarter graduate’s house honking and cheering. Graduates stood in their yards dressed in cap and gown, surrounded by their families. Each graduate was tossed a graduation beach ball that was signed by school staff. “Like true Spartans nothing stops us from marching forward,� Jen McKee stated. “School might be different right now, but we weren’t about to let that stop us from celebrating the success of our students,� she added. While each platform graduation is special, this will certainly be a platform to remember. Congrats to Triumph’s third quarter graduates – Bri Wilson, Jax Roy, Kacey Patton, Nathan Cline, and Isa Iantorno!

Laramie County Library System Curbside Pick-Up

Animal Foster Care Needed

Beginning May 18, all Laramie County Library System facilities will offer curbside pick-up of library items for limited hours throughout the week. Library card holders may put items on hold and pick them up curbside when the items are ready. The library will provide detailed instructions for curbside pick-up in an email when the hold becomes available. Due to this new service and the resumption of item checkout, library materials that are currently checked out will be due on May 18. Overdue fees for items due on May 18 will be suspended through May 31. Laramie County Library System will remain closed to the public through at least May 31. Plant Pandemonium at the Botanic Gardens Taco John’s is generously sponsoring the 8th Annual Plant Pandemonium at the Paul Smith Children’s Village at the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens. The community is invited to help them plant the landscape for the Village and Gardens. All plants are provided. There will be several precautions enforced to ensure the safety of all volunteer planters. Volunteers MUST provide their own hand trowels for planting. The Botanic Gardens will NOT be sharing tools. Planting beds and containers will flagged with six foot spacing between family groups and individuals. The Paul Smith Children’s Village will not be open for free play during Plant Pandemonium programs. Restrooms and drinking fountains will be unavailable. Due to COVID-19, and limits on social gatherings, the volunteer workforce will be reduced significantly. Currently, they will be able to host 25 volunteers at one time. Individual and family groups are welcome. No pre-registration is required, but volunteers will not be allowed to enter the Children’s Village if they have reached capacity. Dates and times: Saturday, May 23, from 1:00pm-4:00pm - Container Chaos, help plant planters and containers for the Paul Smith Children’s Village and the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens; May 26, 28, 30 and June 2, 4, from 1:00pm-4:00pm - Plant Pandemonium, help plant areas within the Paul Smith Children’s Village; June 6, from 10:00am-4:00pm - Help plant areas within the Paul Smith Children’s Village, and the Taco John’s Taco Truck will be onsite for hungry volunteers. ADA Paratransit services have continued to operate as normal. CTP will make single passenger paratransit service available to all residents of Cheyenne for essential trips only, at no cost to the rider. LCCC Campus Reopening Plans and Summer Events Laramie County Community College’s Return to Business (R2B) team is working to provide guidance related to the operations of the college and the phased return of a physical presence on the campuses in Cheyenne and Laramie. LCCC will continue to work in a virtual format with suspended physical operations through May 31. The college will continue to assess this situation, including any exception requests, in line with the current health orders provided by the Wyoming Department of Heath and the Cheyenne-Laramie County Health Department. This closure extension includes the LCCC facilities for community and campus events/ activities, such as the Children’s Discovery Center, Recreation and Athletics Complex dining facilities, Boys and Girls Club, Wyoming Highway Patrol, Outreach and Workforce Development, and UW Extension.
