CELEBRATING DAD

Father’s Day is June 21st. A day to honor our fathers and father-figures. The men who show up every day and serve as mentors and role models. They give us unconditional love and support, and teach us innumerable life lessons. A card is lovely, but what can we do to express our gratitude to these unsung heroes? The current situation actually lends itself to all sorts of possibilities to make this Father’s Day extra special. Food is always a great place to start. The old saying goes something like, “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” There’s definitely some truth to that. While moms are more about brunch, dads tend to favor beef and pork. Can you say bacon and barbeque? Cook dad his favorite steak or some ribs, and then sit down to enjoy it. Spend quality time together. Maybe dad and the kids can go for a bike ride. Since the country is still reopening, how about an afternoon of board games, or maybe a movie marathon complete with popcorn. Binge watch a favorite show, or work on a project together. The possibilities are endless. How about some gift ideas? There are options for everyone, from the sports fan, to the foodie, to the techie. For the dad who plays golf, personalized golf balls or a golf towel are good choices. Cornhole games are popular right now, and dart boards are making a come-back. Get him something with his favorite sports team’s logo; maybe a hat, shirt, or a water bottle. For the foodie, grills and grilling accessories are always popular. Barbeque rubs and seasonings are also appreciated. Dad may also love a grilling apron with his name on it, and a pocket for his favorite beverage. Gourmet food gifts are all the rage. You can find anything from caviar, to custom craft beer assortments, and everything in between. Coolers are always a good choice, and they aren’t your grandparent’s coolers. You can find them with movie and TV characters, as well as sports teams. Tech gifts are always in demand. The techie dad would totally appreciate a personalized phone case, laptop, tablet case, or mousepad. Charging or docking stations are another good choice. Yes, we have The Cloud, but we also need to back up our data. External hard drives can alleviate the worry of losing those important documents or cherished pictures. Wallets are popular gifts for guys, and they’re now available in styles that help prevent identity theft. There are infinitely more tech gift ideas out there. An internet search will yield a plethora of selections. The bottom line is that we want to make these dads and mentors feel special, and let them know that we appreciate everything they have done for us. Father’s Day is a great opportunity to tell all of these wonderful men just how much they mean to us, and how they’ve impacted our lives.

Laramie County Community College has set forth a new plan to establish procedures and standards for operations in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Phase One of the LCCC Return to Business Plan continues through August 14. The Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce is announcing the Check On 2 campaign — a movement dedicated to showing support and spreading positivity to local businesses during the COVID-19 outbreak. Check On 2 is designed to become a chain-reaction which will foster a support system within the greater Cheyenne business community. The Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce is challenging the local business community to participate. The rules are simple; local business owners should reach out to two individuals (friends in business, associates, clients, employees, etc.) and simply check on them. During the conversation, ask how they are doing, offer to purchase a carryout item for them from a local restaurant, purchase them a local gift card, ask if they need help, and spread positivity. Finish the conversation by asking them to pass the challenge forward by encouraging them to contact two more community members. Following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidelines of limiting in-person contact is important, so plan to call or text the businesses you are checking on. Use the hashtag, #CheckOn2 and tag the Chamber on social media (Facebook@ GreaterCheyenneChamber and Instagram @CheyenneChamber) with comments, photos and videos to show your support.
