Lyre

A LYRE is a musical instrument that was invented in ancient Greece. Technically, a LYRE is considered to be a YOKE LUTE. The strings of the instrument are attached to a yoke – two arms and a crossbar. LYRES are smaller versions of an instrument called a CITHARA (also spelled KITHARA). The CITHARA had seven strings and was used by professionals, because it required a lot of skill to play. The LYRE, much easier to play, was popular with the common people.
