PROFESSIONAL SPORTS MAKE A COMEBACK!
Over the last few months, we’ve binged watched everything from The Walking Dead, to Game of Thrones, to The Golden Girls. After all, who doesn’t love Betty White? We’re passionate about our TV shows, but we’re craving something more. At this point we would give almost anything for the sound of sneakers squeaking on the polished wood court as our favorite players dance toward the basket. We’re fascinated with Dexter, but we would trade it in a heartbeat if we could watch helmetclad guys on skates being thrown into the boards while manipulating a round chunk of rubber across the ice. And we’re ecstatic that we have once again been able to listen to the whoosh and whine of finely tuned engines speed around an asphalt track. What does all of this mean? You guessed it. Professional sports are coming back! NASCAR was one of the first to restart their season. They started back on May 17 at Darlington, sans fans in the stands. They anticipate having a complete slate of 36 races yet this year. Some of those may be doubleheaders. Fans will be permitted in the stands at some racetracks, including Talladega. “If you’re not first, you’re last,” to quote Ricky Bobby from Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. Where do NBA teams go to restart their season? They go to Disney World. The plan is for 22 of the 30 teams to return to action for an abbreviated eight-game regular season. They will play at the ESPN World Wide of Sports Complex at Disney World in Orlando. Training camps will start at the end of June, and the season will begin on July 31. Each of the 22 teams will play eight seeding games to finalize the playoff bracket. During the finals, two games every other day will be played, taking less than two weeks. It will still be a best of seven games played over a shortened time span. How about some ice in the middle of a long, hot summer? The NHL announced that it will return with 26 teams, including the Colorado Avalanche, competing for the Stanley Cup. Teams will play eight best of five series and a round-robin with the top four teams in each conference to determine the seeding for the playoffs. Specific dates and locations have yet to be determined, but training camps will open on July 10. The NFL and MLB are still in talks for the 2020 season, but in the meantime, dig out your fan gear and get ready for some NASCAR, NBA, and NHL action. Although for the most part, we aren’t able to cheer on our favorite teams in person, we can certainly enjoy the competition from the comfort of our living rooms. Fourth of July Fireworks
Cheyenne Frontier Days™ has partnered with ANB Bank, Union, Cheyenne Beverage, Cowboy Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram, First Interstate Bank and Black Hills Energy to host the annual fireworks display for the City of Cheyenne. The 2020 fireworks show is designed to maximize aerial displays for visibility from locations all over Cheyenne. On July 4, Lions Park will be open to foot traffic only and Carey Avenue will be closed to vehicle traffic, so plan to enjoy the show from your own neighborhood or other open, flat areas. The Wyoming Department of Transportation and the Laramie County School District have offered their parking lots for those who wish to view the fireworks. Tune in to local radio station KFBC at 1240 AM and 97.5 FM to hear the patriotic broadcast accompanying the fireworks display. The fireworks display will begin at approximately 9:35pm. The Cheyenne Animal Shelter is now accepting registrations for the third annual Discers for Whiskers disc golf tournament to be held Saturday, July 11, at Dave Romero Park, 1317 Parsley Boulevard. Public Art Call Announced
The Wyoming Arts Council has announced that a new call for entry for public art is open. The Wyoming Department of Health, along with the Veteran’s Commission and State Construction Department, are building the Veteran’s Home of Wyoming Skilled Nursing Facility, located in Buffalo. Through the State of Wyoming’s Art in Public Buildings program, artwork will be commissioned for the exterior of the building. A Request for Qualifications (RFQ) is open to artists with a deadline of July 17, 2020. This is a national RFQ. Wyoming artists will be given preference. The call is available on CaFE (callforentry.org). Additional details, including eligibility requirements, timelines, and budget information are available on CaFE and on the Wyoming Arts Council website, wyoarts.state. wy.us/. Wyoming artists are encouraged to apply. Art in Public Buildings legislation for the State of Wyoming is administered through the Wyoming Arts Council. There will be a one-week online auction that will begin on Friday, July 24 and culminate in a onehour live broadcast (method to be determined) on Friday, July 31. The Cheyenne Celtic Festival will be held Friday-Sunday, September 18-20. Laramie County Library System invites the community to participate in its virtual Summer Reading Challenge, Imagine Your Story, which will take place solely online through September 31 in an effort to help minimize the spread of COVID-19. In observance of Independence Day, the programs will not operate and the office will be closed Friday-Saturday, July 3 and 4. The Cheyenne Transit Program (CTP) fixed-route bus service is still suspended but ADA Paratransit services have continued to operate as normal. CTP will make single passenger paratransit and general public curb to curb service available to all residents of Cheyenne for essential trips only, at no cost to the rider. Archaeology at Sunrise Mine, Tour Powars II
You can take a guided tour of Powars II to see the archaeology at Sunrise Mine. The tour is Saturday, August 15, the gates open at 11:30am and the 3-hour mine and town tour leaves at 1:00pm. Cheyenne Animal Shelter Closed Due to COVID-19
The Cheyenne Animal Shelter confirms that an employee has tested positive for COVID-19 and is now receiving medical attention. For the safety of the public, the Shelter will close for adoptions and owner surrenders at least until July 5. Fosters are needed to house pets until such time as they can be adopted.
