Lion’s Park Saturday, August 21

Looking for something to do this weekend? Consider the inaugural Cheyenne Arts Celebration taking place at Lion’s Park this Saturday, August 21 from noon to 11:00 p.m. The Celebration is the brain child of Arts Cheyenne, and will feature live music, visual art, food, and beverages, all on the grounds of beautiful Lion’s Park. According to Arts Cheyenne executive director Bill Lindstrom, Cheyenne used to host a similar annual festival in the last decade, and the group decided it was time to bring the event back. Beautiful Lion’s Park was deemed the perfect location, with its amphitheater for live music, and the adjacent grass field for demonstrations and booths. Lindstrom stressed that, “It’s a large area where people can enjoy the cool grass, as opposed to hot asphalt. Since patrons will also have more room to spread out, we can help keep people safe during this uncertain time. We want it to be a good time for everyone to come out and enjoy the day and the many activities we have planned. As part of its mission, Arts Cheyenne strives to bring free events to the local community, and this is looking to be a fun-filled day of free activities that the entire family can enjoy.” The musical performances kick-off at 12:00, and continue until 10:30 p.m. There will be local and regional groups performing hip hop, pop, and rock, including Cheyenne’s own Sunnyvale High, Trey Wrks, and Onwuka. Grammy nominated hip-hop artist Trev Rich is the headliner, and rock group Patti Fiasco of Fort Collins will also be featured. Other acts include The Grand Alliance from Denver, and rock band Bud Bronson & The Goodtimers. Thirteen juried artists will be doing demonstrations throughout the day, as well as selling their wares. Types of art include mixed media, fabric, painting, pottery, wood, glass, and photography. Featured artists include Cheyenne’s Melinda Cummings, James Overstreet, and event organizer Desiree Brothe. In fact, Brothe will be doing a live painting during the celebration. Don’t forget about the food and drinks. Food trucks will be serving up delicious fare such as nachos, burritos, burgers, barbeque, fruit popsicles, and other frozen desserts. Festival goers can wash down all that deliciousness with a variety of beverages, including at least a dozen different beers. Festival planners are expecting thousands of people to come out to enjoy the day. Ample free parking is available at the CFD lot across the street from the park. A VALLUM was a defensive wall used in Roman times, consisting of a mound of earth, or AGGER, with a deep ditch or FOSSA in front of it. A Latin word, FOSSA is pluralized with an “e” on the end – FOSSAE. This type of wall also gave rise to the term VALLATE – to have a raised edge. Other military terms include a REDOUBT, or REDOUT – a defense work placed outside a larger fort, and an ABATTIS or ABATIS, which was a fortification using sharpened stakes driven into the ground. This event will have each team pulling a fire truck 20 gut-wrenching feet, sweating it out for the fastest time in each division. Additionally The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is the movement’s largest grassroots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle, at its most basic level the Torch Run is an actual running event, in which officers and athletes run the Flame of Hope™ to the Opening Ceremonies of local Special Olympic competitions and State and National Games. Both events are organized by Cheyenne Law Enforcement as part of the Wyoming Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Wyoming. Adult Volleyball Registration Open

Registration is open for the City of Cheyenne Men’s and Women’s Fall Volleyball Leagues. The league will be separated into men’s and women’s leagues, then into different divisions for all skill levels. Games will be played primarily at the Eastridge Facility at 1780 East Pershing Boulevard. Late registration is running through August 26 where a $50 late fee will be added. After August 26 registration will be closed. The cost of the league is $420 per team. The season will span 12 weeks, with ten games guaranteed plus a single elimination tournament seeded based on regular season standings. The season will start Monday, September 13, playing Monday-Thursday evenings. Registration is open for the City of Cheyenne Youth Co-Rec Volleyball League. The league is designed to teach the fundamentals of volleyball to boys and girls, grades 4-6.
