LIFE IN LOCKDOWN

HOW’S EVERYONE DOING OUT THERE? We’re approaching the six-month mark of life in lockdown due to COVID-19. One of my single friends made a social media post the other day that said something like, “Where are all of my married friends’ posts about how wonderful their spouse is? I haven’t seen any of those lately. lol.â€? While it’s true that too much togetherness can be somewhat stressful, there really are lots of positives that have come out of quarantine. We just may have to look a little KDUGHU WR Âż QG WKHP DW WLPHV EXW WKH\ÂśUH RXW WKHUH Let’s start globally. By working remotely, we’re decreasing our carbon footprint. We’ve all read that pollution levels are down, and rivers and waterways are clearer since we’re not traveling as much. With museums doing virtual exhibits, we can experience culture without having to travel.

New York, Washington, D.C., London and Paris are just a few of the cities offering virtual tours of their famous museum collections.

Locally, we’re more in touch with our communities. We’re checking on our elderly neighbors to see if they need anything. We’ve all seen the viral videos of music and singing from DSDUWPHQW EDOFRQLHV FKLOGUHQ OHDYLQJ À RZHUV DQG sidewalk chalk art, while their parents drop off home cooked meals.

In our own homes we’re cleaning out cupboards, doing projects we’ve put off for months (or years), trying new hobbies, or revisiting old ones. My kitchen has never looked better. I actually know where things are now. I’ve always wanted to try macramÊ, and I’m happy to say that I’m about half ZD\ ¿ QLVKHG ZLWK D FRDVWHU VHW , DOVR GXJ RXW VRPH ROG SLDQR PXVLF DQG KDYH VWDUWHG SHFNLQJ DW WKH NH\V RQFH DJDLQ , GH¿ QLWHO\ need some lessons when this is all over. Or possibly some virtual lessons in the meantime.

We’re also cooking and eating more meals together as a family, something that I think has been sorely missed in our high-tech, fast-paced society. You can have the some of the best conversations while chopping vegetables, sautÊing onions, or making a delicious roux. Dinner dialogue is back in style. Many of us are having intelligent FRQYHUVDWLRQ ZLWK RXU WHHQDJHUV PD\EH IRU WKH ¿ UVW WLPH LQ D ORQJ WLPH /HWœV WDON VWUHDPLQJ :H KDYH VHUYLFHV OLNH 1HWÀ L[ to help keep us occupied. Just think how much harder this would all be if we didn’t have access to our favorite shows on demand. Can you say Yellowstone with Kevin Costner? How about Longmire, Dexter, Game of Thrones, the list goes on and on. How about Zoom and Facetime? A great way to keep in touch virtually. I have a standing happy hour Zoom conference once a week with a group of friends from all over the U.S. and Canada. Typically, we would see each other once a year, but now we literally see each other once a week.

Even though we’ve been cooped up for months now, as you can see, there is a silver lining. So, kick back, relax, and try to enjoy the ride. Just remember, this too shall pass, and when it does, we might just discover that we have become better citizens because of it.

Laramie County Community College is seeking plumbing adjunct staff that will commit to teaching level one or two apprentices 1 night per week, typically around 3 hours, provide opportunities for hands on application and proctor exams. Cheyenne Animal Control

St. Joseph’s Food Pantry

The Cheyenne Animal Shelter and Animal Control will alter the hours it provides animal control services within Cheyenne. Beginning September 1, Animal Control officers will be on duty from 8:00am to 8:00pm (307)635-1453. During the night-time hours between the hours of 8:00pm and 8:00am, residents should call the Cheyenne Police Department’s non-emergency number at (307)637-6524. A police officer will respond to and coordinate with the Animal Control officer on call for animal emergencies including vicious animals, dog bites and cases where animals are interfering with traffic. Animal Control encourages people to not capture a stray animal unless they are prepared to keep it until morning. As well, those who find or lose an animal after 8:00pm may post photos and pertinent information on the after hours lost and found Facebook page or to call the volunteer on duty at (307)2145779 who will assist in doing so. Those who discover a deceased animal, including a domestic or wild animal, should advise the City Sanitation Department at (307)637-6440. Sanitation employees will call the owner if there is a proper identification tag.

If, after hours, a deceased domestic animal is creating a traffic hazard, it should be removed from traffic and reported to Animal Control for pick-up the following day at (307)635-1453.

During the rest of August & September, St. Joseph’s Food Pantry, 206 Van Lennon will close at 12:00pm when temperatures are anticipated to be in high 90’s. By closing at 12:00pm, this protects our volunteers from heat stroke or any other heat related issues. Try to pick up groceries before 12:00pm or come on the other days, Monday - Thursday, 10:00am - 1:00pm (12:00pm closure if high temperature). The food pantry provides weekly groceries to low-income families, seniors, veterans, retirees, homeless, campers & special cases.

For new clients, please bring a photo ID (drivers license, veteran card) exceptions include the homeless and special circumstances. A current proof of address such as utility bill, rent receipt, medical bill is required, except for the homeless. For campers, the proof of address may be waived by lead volunteers. The drive-thru is open Monday- Thursday, 10:00am-1:00pm except on high temperature days.

Check-in volunteers will ask you to pop the trunk or unlock doors. Due to Covid-19, pantry volunteers cannot put groceries in the front seat or back seat if a person is present. Stay in your car. On behalf of their wonderful volunteers, community partners, and staff we appreciate your understanding. Tech2Connect Grant for the Senior Activity Center The Laramie County Senior Activity Center, 2101 Thomes Avenue, has received a Tech2Connect Grant from the University of Wyoming, Wyoming Center on Aging (WyCOA). The funds will be used to purchase 2 new computers that are accessible to our older population and those with disabilities, in connecting with remote social services, healthcare, and to combat social isolation caused by COVID-19. Specifically, in Cheyenne, the funds will be used to assist seniors with accessing the internet to video chat with their physicians, family or long distance friends; during the pandemic we see the need, now more than ever on staying connected to your support group. WyCOA has also partnered with the Wyoming Assistive Technology Program to provide training videos to assist older adults in learning about the technology that can ensure they have access to social service, healthcare and keep them engaged with family and friends.
