The Hunt For Safety

If you’re a seasoned hunter, you’ve probably heard all of this before, but a refresher course never hurts. If you’re new to hunting, these tips might keep you safe. Take a moment to give this a read and avoid trouble on the game trail.

When dealing with firearms, one rule applies above all else: Treat Every Gun As A Loaded Gun. Guns are deadly weapons and should be respected. They should never be pointed at something you do not intend to shoot. When you are ready to fire a gun, make sure you know what you are firing at. Never shoot at movement or sound. You can’t unfire the weapon, so make sure your target is not another person.

Next, consider the transportation of your weapon. Make sure the weapon’s safety is on. Ask your hunting buddy to hold your weapon while you do your climbing. Then, have them hand back your weapon to you. Do the same for them.

Don’t hunt alone. The wilderness can be a dangerous place. Accidents can happen and being alone can make matters worse. Should you choose not to hunt with a buddy, let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.

It is a good idea to wear hunter’s orange and bring along a first aid kit. An orange vest and/or pant will allow others to see you more easily. A first aid kit won’t take up a lot of room and it’s better to have one and not need it than to need one and not have it. Speaking of gear, make sure all your gear, including your weapon, is in working order before you set out on your hunt.

Hunting is a sport with a history like no other. It is truly something the whole family can enjoy. Just make sure you follow these safety rules and use common sense.

Did You Know?

Hunters and non-hunters alike are familiar with bright orange coats, hats, vests, and other gear that is worn during hunting season. Even though it seems counterintuitive to wear “blaze orange” in the fields or woods for fear that animals may spot you, hunters need not worry so much. Deer typically cannot recognize blaze orange attire designed to make hunters visible to other people. According to researchers at the University of Georgia, a combination of factors make deer less likely to be startled by blaze orange. Deer have less binocular overlap than humans. Binocular overlap (the area that both eyes view at the same time) allows focus on a single point and enables depth perception. Deer must shift their heads much more than humans to gain a good three-dimensional perspective of an object. Deer also have fewer cones in their retinas compared to humans. Cones are photoreceptors that enable color vision and distinguish fine details. Furthermore, deer cannot readily perceive longer wavelengths of color, so oranges and reds appear more like brown or gray to them. However, deer can see blue colors more easily, so hunters may want to avoid blue jeans paired with their orange gear.

WILD GAME RECIPES

Venison Roast

4 lb. venison roast

1 tsp. garlic powder

1 tsp. onion powder

2 tsp. celery salt

1½ tsp. salt

2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

2 tsp. pepper

½ cup ketchup

1 TBSP liquid smoke

3 TBSP brown sugar

1 TBSP dry mustard

1 TBSP soy sauce

1 TBSP lemon juice

2-4 drops hot pepper sauce

Mix ingredients. Pour over 4 lb. venison roast (or beef roast). Cook in cr pot on high for 6-8 hours. Add potatoes and/or carrots to the crock pot delicious meat and potato dinner

Pleasant Pheasant

4 boneless skinless pheasant breasts

Marinade (substitute your favorite if preferred) Remaining ingredients

1/4 cup soy sauce

2 garlic cloves, sliced

1/4 cup onion, diced

2 TBSP honey

1/4 cup rice vinegar

1/2 cup flour

2-4 TBSP butter

1/2-1 cup chicken broth

1/4 cup cilantro

Marinate the pheasant breasts overnight (or for as long as possible) in your favorite marinade, or mix together the soy sauce, garlic, onion, honey and vinegar for a yummy Asian-inspired marinade. Remove pheasants from marinade, and coat in flour We do not rinse o marinade, or allow to drip o , so that the flour makes a nice coating on the pheasant. Heat a frying pan with butter, and place coated pheasant in pan. Allow to brown on each side, then add 1/4 cup of chicken broth, or enough to create some liquid on the bottom. Add cilantro. Cover and allow pheasant to cook for 4-6 minutes per side, until cooked through. Don’t let all the chicken broth cook o , or it could burn. Add more if necessary. Once done, take pheasant out of pan, and add chicken broth, a little at a time, scraping the bottom of the pan to create grav y. Serve with rice, or noodles. Variations: Instead of chicken broth, use chicken noodle soup and some water! Or, use your favorite marinade. after browning, and adding liquid (or soup with some water), put in a 350 degree oven for 20-30 minutes - then proceed as directed.

Low-Sodium Deer Chili

2 lb. ground venison

3 TBSP Worcestershire sauce

½ cup onion, chopped

½ cup garlic, minced

2 TBSP red pepper

½ cup chili powder

1 TBSP garlic powder

1 TBSP onion powder

2 TBSP salt substitute

2 TBSP crushed red pepper

1 14-oz. can tomato sauce

1 14-oz. can diced tomatoes with chilies

In a large skillet, mix venison with Worcester sauce, onion, garlic, red pepper and a third of the chili powder and cook until browned. Drain fat and add tomato sauce and diced tomatoes. Fill both cans with water and pour into mixture. Add garlic powder, onion powder, salt substitute, crushed red pepper and remaining chili powder Stir well and cook until heated through, stirring occasionally

Laramie County DUI Victim Impact Panel will be held September 25. The Cheyenne Ice and Events Center is offering three fantastic programs for the fall and winter months (October-March).
