Holroyd named LCSD1 2020 Teacher of the Year

E

ast High band director Dan Holroyd was recently named Laramie County School District 1’s 2020 Teacher of the Year. He was presented with the award during the LCSD1 Board of Trustees meeting on Monday, Aug. 17.

A 32-year education veteran, Holroyd has taught music for 29 years at East High. Holroyd presides over all band classes for ninth- through 12th-grade students, including concert band, jazz band, freshman/sophomore band, marching band, percussion band and pep-band.

Under his direction, East High’s band has consistently received superior ratings at the Wyoming State Marching Band Festival, Concert Band Festivals and Jazz Band Festivals. Additionally, the East High band has maintained high enrollment of more than 100 members.

Holroyd studied all aspects of teaching music and earned a bachelor’s degree in music education in 1987 at the University of Wyoming.

An adjunct Laramie County Community College faculty member from 1995–1996, Hol-

royd directed the college’s Jazz Ensemble.

Additionally, Holroyd holds a master’s degree in education, which he earned in 2000 at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Holroyd is a member of the Wyoming Music Educators Association and the National Association for Music Education. He was also a staff member of the Wyoming All-State Marching Band.

Holroyd said it is truly a pleasure to accept this award and he believes it wouldn’t have been possible to achieve it without the help of his colleagues and the students he has instructed each day.

“My favorite part of the job is watching the students grow over the four years that I have them in class,” Holroyd said. “As students graduate and move on with their lives, it is very gratifying to know they leave East High with a lifelong skill of making music.”

Holroyd said he considers himself fortunate to work for what he believes is one of the most supportive school districts within the state and the region. He believes the accomplishments of LCSD1’s teachers wouldn’t be possible

Cheyenne Firefighters Chili Cook-off

Cheyenne Firefighters of Local 279 are excited to announce that the annual MDA Chili Cook-Off continues to be planned and will occur on Saturday, October 3 at the Cheyenne Depot Plaza, Capitol Avenue and West 15th Street. Organizers for Local 279 say that it has been challenging amid the Covid restrictions and concerns. The traditional fillthe-boot did not occur this year and they are hopeful for a good event to continue the efforts to raise money for the MDA. Proceeds from the event will help progress MDA’s mission to save and improve the lives of kids and adults with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related life-threatening diseases that take away physical strength, independence and life. Local 279 will also be continuing their virtual fill-the-boot donations until December. The chili cook-off event is being organized and scheduled alongside Cheyenne’s local fire departments in a joint open house event for National Fire Prevention Week. Nightmare on 17th Street Haunted House Cancelled

The 32nd annual “Nightmare on 17th Street” Haunted House 2020 has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Members of the organizing committee have made the decision to cancel the 2020 Haunted House. This difficult decision was made due to the large number of people in close proximity and the health danger to our volunteers and community members attending this annual event. They look forward to seeing everyone next year in 2021.

Cheyenne Organ Concert

Acclaimed Morman Tabernacle organist Andrew Unsworth will perform 2:00pm, Sunday, October 11, on the Visser Rowland Tracker Organ at the Cathedral of St. Mary, featured in the 28th edition of the Cheyenne Organ Concert Series. The concert is free and open to the public, but the Concert Series Committee will be observing Covid-19 precautions. The 2020 concert is in memory of the Reverend Carl A. Beavers, who presided over installation of the organ at St. Mary’s in 1992. There will be a camera feed from the Cathedral loft to a large screen in the center of the sanctuary to allow the audience to see the performer at the organ.

Seating must be reserved for this year’s concert.
