South High School News Public Schools Chronicle

About four years ago, students all over the world were greatly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. That left millions of seniors without the ability to enjoy their last year, freshmen without the experience of the first day of school jitters, and everyone else to do everything online. Today, we have the chance to enjoy the normality that we all missed when it came to the start of our new school year. The true question is, how is South High School feeling about the 2024-2025 school year so far?

As a school, South High school has been trying their absolute best to make school a safe and effective environment. According to gcu.edu, “Education exposes you to ideas and cultures beyond what you are already familiar with. Growing up, you may know about only certain types of music, art or literature. A higher education exposes you to a wide variety of topics and cultural expressions, heightening your appreciation of global contributions.” While school can be somewhat heavy on many, it really does benefit students majorly. That’s why first impressions when it comes to school, mean everything. Coming in with a positive attitude and a vision ahead can set people up for a path in a way. Sometimes all we need is a little push, a quick question to make you think. This year, some student from each grade were asked a few questions about their year so far.

Each grade will have different answers, seniors may be much more excited than freshman, or vice Versa! Regardless, every student’s view is valid. We had asked what they were looking forward to this year. A senior named Lia Dorado Lopez had said “I am looking forward to graduating and doing all the fun senior things.” She wasn’t the only one who was excited about some of the senior activities. Another senior named Gabriella Lopez had said “I am looking forward to Prom.” Clearly, for seniors, a lot of these activities mean the world to them. These are things that they look back on for decades and be reminded of the fun memories they had throughout their last school year.

Since we’re all about improvement, we had asked some other students what held them back from their full potential last year so that we could have them reflect and make sense of what they could do better. Isis Fair, a junior had said “Not coming to school” a few other students had the same answer. Coming to school can be a hard task. While it may seem like the bare minimum, coming to school means doing everything else. With the high depression rates nowadays, getting up in the morning and coming to school can be the hardest thing that they have had to do. However, it is crucial for keeping grades up and not getting behind. Some other students had answered with “Not doing my work.” That is another thing that is easier said than done. With the right motivation, doing your work can be easy, but sometimes we can get slumped, and our small attention span can impact that. Regardless, all were ready to change things up a little and avoid the same negative outcome that they had before.

With a new school year, opportunities for teachers and staff to improve and fill in gaps come along. That also means new rules and different policies, which students have had somewhat of a tough time adjusting to. We asked students what they were struggling to understand or accept this school year. Skylar Smith a senior, had said “Getting treated like a sixth grader. Having a hall pass.” Some people may know what he is talking about, others may not. This year, there have been quite a few rule changes and that is why the yearbook staff felt it was necessary for students to express their concerns while they adjust. That is why this question was so necessary, south is a about representation. A lot of times, our voices are hidden underneath our fear, that’s exactly why it’s so important for us to let students know that their opinions and voices are valid. Another main concern was the new schedule. “For me it’s just how the schedules are, like it’s pretty confusing by Friday.” Said Juana Izaguirre, a junior. For teenagers, or others in general, consistency is key. And so, a lot of times, confusing schedules that are different every week puts extra anxiety or stress when it comes to school which is why it’s understandable that students are confused and irritated.

Overall, this school year brings many new opportunities for all grades, whether it be the firsts of many, or the all the lasts, students get to use this new school year as a fresh start. Over the course of the year, students may change their goals, but that does not mean that it wasn’t good for them to set some at the beginning of the year. All humans want is to be better, it is in our nature. So, for some, the start of school is a breath of fresh air and a new. The best advice the South students could give you, is that there is always room for improvement.

stamie Region are slowly recovering from long-term drought conditions as well as the 2022-23 winter. Slight changes to license issuance and season dates will provide more opportunities, particularly in the northern portion of the Medicine Bow herd (Hunt Area 32) and Centennial herd (Hunt Areas 37 and 45). Grassland herds within the Laramie Plains and east of the Laramie Mountains, which include Hunt Areas 11, 34, 38 and 103, have declined the past seven years, along with notable decreases in fawn production. Decent buck numbers remain in these herds, but older animals will be harder to find. Mild winter conditions reduced stress on pregnant does, however lack of spring and summer precipitation does not bode well for fawn survival, especially east of the Laramie Range. Overall, hunting opportunities within the Laramie Region will be similar to previous years with a slight uptick in Bates Hole country.

Mule deer: Mild winter conditions most likely had a positive e ect on herds throughout the region, especially compared to the previous year ’s winter However, below-average spring and summer precipitation was not favorable for lactating does and newborn fawns. Herds throughout the Laramie Region are all below their respective population objectives which translates to less opportunity and harder hunting conditions. Chronic wasting disease continues to slowly increase across herd units. The Goshen Rim herd has the highest prevalence at 39% and herds that were at 9% five years ago are now around 15%. Unfortunately, this is not good news for mule deer populations.

Hunters taking to the field in Hunt Area 70 need to be aware that the area is under mandatory CWD sampling. Wildlife biologists, wildlife technicians and game wardens will be in full force throughout the seven-day season collecting CWD samples at check stations to assist hunters with collection e orts. More information will be coming on check station locations, CWD head box locations and other places that hunters can take their harvested mule deer to get sampled.

Elk: Populations remain above objectives with ample harvest opportunities throughout the region. The Type 8 license is new this year in Hunt Areas 3, 6, 7 and 8. This reduced-price cow/calf license is unlimited in number, however, hunting limitations in each hunt area vary so hunters are encouraged to read the regulations to familiarize them with the di erences. Bull hunting opportunities continue to be favorable throughout the region, even in general hunt areas. Given hunting pressure on public land, sportspersons should be prepared to pursue elk in areas that are a fair distance from well-traveled roads and trails. Look for additional access opportunities on properties enrolled in the Game and Fish Access Yes program, and be sure to secure a permission slip if needed.

Moose: Again this fall, hunters with moose licenses are expected to have excellent hunting opportunities in the Snowy Range herd. Harvest success across Type 1 and Type 4 licenses continues to be exceptional, and the herd maintains high bull ratios and good calf production. Vegetation regrowth from the Mullen Fire is expected to improve moose habitat Information provided by Wyoming Game & Fish Department.

Hunters Encouraged to Submit Sage-Grouse Wings by The Wyoming Game & Fish Department

CHEYENNE — Sage-grouse hunters in Wyoming are encouraged to use wing barrels to help the Wyoming Game and Fish Department have a more complete picture of harvest within the state

Game and Fish asks hunters to deposit one wing from each harvested sagegrouse in roadside collection barrels. Hunters should remove one wing at the elbow joint and deposit it in the nearest wing barrel. Handling the wing with ca re is important to ensure accurate data collection. Legally, the other fully-feathered wing must remain attached to the bird while in the field and during transport.

“The collection of sage-grouse wings provides crucial data for monitoring population health and making informed management decisions,” said Nyssa Whitford, Game and Fish sage-grouse and sagebrush biologist. “Wildlife biologists gather data from wings that would otherwise be di cult to obtain and o er important information about reproductive success.”

Last year hunters dropped just over 2,800 wings in collection barrels statewide. Barrels are found during hunting season at specific locations within the sagebrush steppe regions, primarily in central and southwest Wyoming. They are often located along primary exit roads near popular hunting areas and wildlife management areas, or in cooperation with local landowners and conservation organizations. Hunters also can drop-o wings and the respective harvest locations to a roadside hunter check station or a Game and Fish regional o ce if there isn't a convenient barrel.

“We appreciate hunters taking the time to deposit one wing from each harvested bird. It is important to us that wings get deposited and they are not removed from the barrels by the public,” Whitford said.

After the hunting season, Game and Fish biologists analyze the wings to determine an estimate of reproductive success. Using length and wear of the primary feathers, each wing is aged as a chick, yearling or adult and sex is determined by the size or measurement of the wing.

“This data helps us determine the average number of chicks per hen that were produced for the year and used in conjunction with spring lek counts, and gives us insight into the overall health of sage-grouse populations and trends,” Whitford said. “The trends we detect help to guide long-term conservation e orts and on-the-ground habitat improvement projects.”

Game and Fish Identifies Upper Wind River Mule Deer Migration Corridor

CHEYENNE — The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission voted to identify the Upper Wind River migration corridor at its recent meeting in Douglas. With the identification of the corridor, additional funding opportunities become available for conservation-based projects on private and public lands to treat invasive annual grasses, improve range fences to wildlife-friendly standards and other proactive management actions.

“Identifying corridors allows us to use science to highlight some of the most important mule deer movements and habitats so that all users can implement practices to conserve these areas,” Wyoming Game and Fish Director Angi Bruce said. “Our Commission continues to lead the nation in the recognition of these important movements.”

The Commission also approved the allocation of $250,000 to combat annual invasive grasses after the recent fires in northeast Wyoming.

In an e ort to increase access for hunters and anglers, the Commission voted to approve a public access road and parking easement along the Popo Agie River and permanent access easements for the Laramie Peak Wildlife Habitat Management Area and Pinto Creek Hunter Management Area.

The Commission was presented with changes to five big game herd units and a proposed amendment to the Wyoming Bighorn/Domestic Sheep Plan. Both proposals were approved.

The Commission approved changes to a series of regulations after considering public comment:

Five most common hunting violations

CHEYENNE - Every year as hunting seasons get underway, Game and o ces receive numerous questions about various game laws and what ers can and cannot do while in the field.

Some of the questions come from new residents who are not familiar with Wyoming law and how Wyoming laws may di er from their previous residence. Most Wyoming laws are a matter of common sense, but there are some and regulations that are violated more frequently than others. Following is a listing of five common violations that crop up every hunting season.

Failure to Tag - Every big and trophy game license has a carcass coupon attached. And each license has the tagging instructions printed on the coupon. When the animal is killed, simply detach the tag from the license and date the carcass coupon by cutting out the entire day and month of the kill. Sign the license and attach to the carcass before leaving the site of the kill. The coupon may be removed during transportation to prevent its loss, but it must be in possession of the person accompanying the carcass. You must detach, sign, and date the tag to comply with the tagging regulation. If any one of these is omitted, then a violation has occurred.

HOURS OF OPERATION

Tuesday-Friday: 10-8 Sat: 10-6 • Sun: 10-4 —Closed Monday

Shooting from a Vehicle - Simply put, it is illegal to shoot any wildlife except predatory animals from any motorized vehicle. This includes o -road vehicles and snowmobiles. To legally fire a weapon, a person must be out of the vehicle. Hunters holding a handicapped hunter permit are exempt from this requirement.

Shooting from a Road - It is illegal to shoot or attempt to kill any wildlife from any public road or highway. No person shall fire any firearm from, along, or across any public road or highway. A public road is defined as any road that is open to vehicular tra c to the public. The road surface, the area between fences on a fenced public road or highway, and the area 30 feet perpendicular to the road surface on unfenced public roads is considered the public road. Two-track trails on public land are not defined as public roads

Failure to Retain Evidence of Gender - Many Wyoming licenses require the taking of a specific sex of animal. There are also season dates in di erent hunt areas when only a specific sex of animal can be taken. To satisfy the proof of gender requirement the regulation states: “in areas where the taking of any big game animal is restricted to a specific sex of animal, either the visible external sex organs, head, or antlers shall accompany the animal as a whole or edible portion thereof.”

Trespass - Wyoming law states that no person shall enter private land to hunt, fish, or trap without written permission from the landowner or person in charge of the property The license must bear the signature of the landowner or agent of the landowner on whose property the hunting is taking place or legitimate proof that permission to hunt has been granted. It is the responsibility of hunters to know if the land is public or private. To assist in this, the Bureau of Land Management has maps showing public and private lands. Maps can be obtained from the BLM by calling 307-775-6256. Many Wyoming sporting goods businesses also carry BLM maps for their local area. For hunters with GPS units a micro SD chip is available from the Game and Fish, 307-777-4600, that shows land status and hunter location.

Wyoming laws and regulations can be found in every set of regulations for each species. Persons with questions on these or any other Game and Fish laws and regulations can call 307-777-4600 or any Game and Fish regional o ce

WILD GAME RECIPES Perfect for the whole family!

Roasted Sage Grouse

2 hen sage grouse or prairie chickens, plucked Salt 2 to 3 pounds assorted root vegetables 2 sprigs of sage and 2 sprigs of rosemary (optional) 5 tablespoons butter or oil

1. Salt the grouse well and set out at room temperature for 30 to 45 minutes. Preheat the oven to 325°F

2. Cut the root vegetables into chunks, coat with oil or butter and salt well. Let these roast while the birds come to room temperature.

3. Put the herbs inside the birds’ cavities. Either smear soft butter over the grouse or coat with oil.

4. Take the roasting pan out and nestle the grouse, breast side up, among the roasting root vegetables. Roast hen sage grouse in the oven for 18 to 20 minutes. Remove the roasting pan from the oven.

Moose Steak

5. Set the oven to 500°F, or as hot as it will go. Baste the birds with a little more butter or fat When the oven hits temperature, return the grouse to the oven and roast until the breast meat hits about 140°F at the thickest part, near the wishbone. This should take 15 minutes for a big prairie chicken or sage hen.

2 lbs moose steaks 1 tablespoon rosemary

1 teaspoon sea salt 1 teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon smoked paprika ½ teaspoon black pepper

1 teaspoon butter per steak optional

1. Steaks cook best when not super cold, so make sure they're completely thawed. Mix up the spice mix, rub on the steaks, and let them sit on the counter for 30 minutes to come to room temp

2. Heat cast iron or griddle on medium high. Add a bit of high heat cooking oil; it doesn't need much.

3. Add your steaks to the hot pan and cook for 2-3 minutes for skinny steaks (less than ½”), 3-4 minutes for medium, (½-3/4” thick) 5-6 minutes for thick steaks (1”+ thick).

4. Flip your steaks, and cook for the same amount of time, but on the lower end of it, start feeling your steaks.

5. When your steaks are done, take them o the pan onto a plate or glass baking dish, and dollop butter on each steak, if you’re using. Because game meat is on the drier side vs beef, I

it makes really nice pan juices that compliment

Slice, and serve!
