Every year the rivalry between Cheyenne East and Cheyenne Central is unmatched. Whether on the court, in the gym, or across the field, the T-Birds and Indians are ready for battle.

East High football has spent the season as one of the most feared programs in the state, spending most of the season holding the #1-ranking.

Even when the T-Birds sit at the top, they know they better be ready for the Indians. These games are traditionally full of energy and intensity.

The T-Birds have held the Indians in check for the past eight years, with T-Birds victories dating back to 2015. Even in 2015, the T-Birds dominated the game until a lightning warning was called, the teams headed to the locker rooms, and the Indians then posted an impressive 20-17 comeback victory.

The 2023 rivalry edition proved to be another battle. The T-Birds and Indians traded touchdowns in the first quarter. The Indians struck first in the second quarter with a field goal. The T-Birds then scored 16 unanswered points and went into halftime with 23-10 lead over Central.

East continued its dominance into the second half, marching down the field at will and putting up 22 straight points before allowing Central to score again. East High added to the win column with a 45-16 final score.

The Thunderbird energy wasn’t only on the field, but it was also in the stands. The Indian student section theme was to Hunt the Duck (TBird), and the East student section responded with “Who’s your Chaddy?” a nod to East’s head coach Chad Goff.

With each student section yelling chants and cheers back and forth, the excitement grew. When the third quarter came around, the T-Birds students grew rowdier than before, throwing baby powder into the air and creating a thick cloud. Once the game was over the East students stormed the field, yelling and screaming that they just beat Central again.

Other than modifying the schedule in 2020-2021 due to Covid, there has been little change within East High’s schedule in the last 15 years.

The last big change was moving to a block schedule, using an A-Day and B-Day rotating schedule. Students and teachers were a bit confused about the new C-Day schedule for the 2023-2024 school year, featuring shorter classes and making time for meetings, activities, and interventions.

Starting on the first Friday of school, students and staff experienced confusion, as no one seemed to know how the first C-Day would function.

C-Days start with first and second period, with advisement following. The next ‘block’ of the day consists of third period, intervention, and then all students go to lunch. The day ends with enrichment time and fourth period.

A simple enough schedule, but a big change from the traditional A-B schedule.

Advisement time teaches students valuable strategies for learning, time-management, citizenship, and practicing healthy habits. These are presented as school-wide lessons and activities to bring the student body together as a unit. Intervention allows students to get homework done, ask teachers questions, and make up tests that they have missed throughout the school week. After lunch, during enrichment, students can participate in activities, clubs, and other gatherings to include everyone in an extracurricular and give them time to unwind from the pressure of the weekly workload.

Three months into the school year, and there remains some questions about where students are supposed to be during certain times and the additional learning blocks, especially for the students who have off-hours throughout the day. “I think people were getting told different things on how the schedule works,” said Lexie Bryson, 11. “That’s why it was such a hot mess.”

Changing the schedule was not an easy task. Several factors were considered before instituting the changes. Student engagement and success were the main reasons for the change.

“We thought we wanted to make it a little bit different so it would give kids an opportunity to have time to do work,” said Mr. Sam Mirich, principal. “(Advisement) therefore it gave us time on Friday to use those (PBIS) strategies. The enrichment in the afternoon is for the people who want to have club meetings, organizational meetings, because throughout the week it is hard to find time.”

After brainstorming with students and staff, conducting surveys, gathering feedback, and re-working the plan many times, the administrators put together a plan for students to get back to what school is all about— learning core values and participating in social activities.

“It gives kids an opportunity to maybe try something they’re never tried or always wanted to try, or just to break up the monotony,” said Amy Gurney, math teacher. She said she has witnessed students who, at first, disliked and opposed the new schedule but then used the schedule to try a new activity and discovered they enjoyed and benefited from it so much that it changed their mindset about the entire day.

The East High Collaborative Decision Making team, comprised of both administrators and teachers, is working towards a solution to make Fridays more enjoyable and less confusing to everyone in the upcoming semester.

“One thing you learn, being at East, is that things always end up working out,” said Mr. Dan Morris, English teacher. “The CDM team and our admin will work together to do what’s best for students. The C-Day isn’t a bad idea. It’s just taking extra time to figure out the details. We’ll tweak it until we get it right, or we’ll change course and fix it. I think we’ll see the benefits in the long run.”

Student excitement builds during Homecoming Spirit Week

Spirit weeks are popular ways to celebrate your school and your school community, and East High prides itself on school spirit, always ready to build the energy and attitude of a big week.

Across the country, spirit week is a traditional part of homecoming, and East High celebrated theirs from October 11-14, ending with a big victory against Cheyenne South High School.

The Thunderbirds’ week featured multiple different themes each day. Tuesday was Twin Day, with friends “twinning” in the same outfits.

Wednesday was Barbie vs. Ken Day, giving students and staff a chance to show off their pink and baby blue inner Barbie and Ken. Thursday was Dress Like a Teacher Day. Students dressed like their favorite teacher, and teachers were challenged to dress like a student. Finally, Friday was East Pride Day, with students and staff showing off their best Blue and Black.

Each day of the week featured a special activity as well.

On Tuesday, East hosted Window Painting in the lobby, when students did their best to paint themes pushing school spirit.

The student body volleyball games were on Wednesday, featuring six teams of students. The teams all had a friendly competition against each other to see who could use the best teamwork to win the tournament.

Pumpkin painting was the featured event on Thursday, showing some fall spirit as well as school spirit. Students were welcome to paint pumpkins with some of the student council members.

In front of a camo-covered crowd, the T-Birds posted a big Homecoming win against Cheyenne South High, posting a 76-13 victory.

The Homecoming Dance was held Saturday night, where the student body danced the night away with their friends.

THE BLACK FLAG — THE ISLAM CALL TO WAR!

Israel and the U.S. are being blamed for the bombing of the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza on 10/17 which killed over 500. In response, a BLACK

FLAG (for the first time in history) was raised over the Imam Reza Mosque in Iran. Per the Scripture-based Qur’an, raising the Black Flag is a call to all of Islam for War. According to the Hadith, the BLACK FLAG was Prophet Muhammad’s battle flag. The image of the BLACK FLAG symbolizes engagement in battle, religious revolt — JIHAD! On Israel’s I-24 News, Iran Foreign Minister, Amirabdallahian, declared, “Iran is deciding whether to carry out a preemptive strike against Israel!” He said, “Muslims and resistance forces will unleash an unstoppable force of resistance and no one will be able to stop them.” The governments of Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Palestine, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey and Qatar have blamed the Israeli Air Force for the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital explosion. The Iranian Embassy in Syria is repeating the words of their Foreign Minister: “Time is up.”

The call to war has been heard. Reports coming out of the Middle East are that the following Embassies have been attacked: Israeli Embassy in Turkey; Israeli Embassy in Jordan; U.S. Embassy in Lebanon; Embassy in Iraq; French Embassy in Iran...

Whether it will be found to be true or not regarding Israeli’s culpability for the bombing, it appears “The board is set, the pieces are moving!” Gandalf, from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Return of the King.

Each of us needs to prepare “self” and those under our influence to be “ready” for the return of “The King!” We have until that last heartbeat — then it’s either Heaven or Hell forever...

Jesus was sharply critical of those in His day who were able to discern coming weather, but blind to the signs of the times. (see Matthew 16:2-3) Not only are Believers able to discern “times and seasons” but they should! When a specific sequence of events begin and continue to unfold, world-wide, it is the duty of followers of Jesus to be alert and alert others that “things are about to change” — radically! What does the Bible say?

Zechariah 12:3 — “And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.” (KJV) Ezekiel 38:9-10 “...They shall come like a storm, thou shall be like a cloud to cover the land, thou and all thy bands, and many people with thee..It shall come to pass, that at the same time (that Israel is attacked?) shall things come into thy mind, and thou shall think an evil thought;...I shall go to them that are at rest, (the U.S.?) that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars or gates, to take a spoil and to take a prey.” (KJV) Daniel 8 — the He Goat (U.S.?) vs. the Ram (the Medes/Iraq and Persians/Iran); then read Daniel 7.

So, if you’re not saved, what does it take to be saved? Tell God you believe that His only begotten Son, Jesus, died for your sins, was buried, and was resurrected. Then, repent and ask to be forgiven of all your sins. It’s that simple. Do it now! An attack on America may happen while we sleep.

The group will leave at 8:00am from the Lions Park parking lot south of the Children’s Village. Carpooling should be available for the 60-mile drive to the refuge. Expect to return to Lions Park at about 1:00pm or 2:00pm.

The Wyoming State Museum, Cheyenne Botanic Gardens, Laramie County Library and Cheyenne Depot Museum are hosting a series of events and exhibits to celebrate Día de los Muertos (or Day of the Dead) with the community. The nearly three-week long celebration will culminate with a huge family-friendly event taking place at all four locations on November 4.
