Graduation and yearbook deadlines quickly approach for EHS seniors

football expects every player to step up and make that one big play. In one of the most exciting and intense games of the year, cornerback Kaleb Romero stepped up and did just that, batting down a pass at just the right moment to lock up a Thunderbird win over the Central Indians.

“I just prepared like it was another game.” said Romero, “We just went into the week with the same mindset and goals as it would be any other game. We didn’t really think of it as a bigger game than any of our other games. We just thought of it as another game, even though it wasn’t hyped up to be that. It’s always East-Central, all that stuff, all that hype up to it, you know. But we couldn’t let any of that stuff get to us you know we just had to prepare like it was another game and play our East football.”

While the Thunderbirds struck first, to take a 6-0 lead, the Indians quickly answered and held the lead for most of the game. East battled throughout the game and finally took a lead with 36 seconds remaining on a Cade Pugh 1-yard run.

With three seconds left, and time for one final play from East’s 40-yard line, Indian quarterback Keagan Bartlett threw a pass to Nathanial Talich in the end zone. East’s Kaleb Romero knocked it out of Talich’s hands to secure the win and overcome a 14-point deficit.

“You know,” said Romero, “I was just thinking in my head, I can’t let them catch this ball on me, and I was covering one of the best receivers in the state. I saw Keegan Bartlet throw the ball my way, (and) he was obviously trying to get it to Talich. I just went up, knocked it out of his hands, and sealed the game for us.”

Only after the block, did Romero realize and feel that he had just won the game for his team, East’s sixth straight victory over the Indians.

“I felt amazing,” he continued. “That’s always so cool, especially in those big games. After that play, I think that’s when I came to the realization that, man, I just knocked the ball out of the hand of Central’s receiver to win the Capitol City Bowl. It was amazing. It was awesome.”

Romero’s block keeps the Thunderbirds in the top ranks of 4A football with record of 6-1. Romero says the team treated this victory no differently than any other home game win, except for listening to some slow R&B music in the locker room.

“After each win at home, we go to Buffalo Wild Wings, and we chow down some wings and have some good team bonding moments, and it’s always fun,” said Romero.

One lesson every high school senior learns is deadlines are a big part of high school life. Ordering graduation gowns, tassels, yearbooks, memory ads, and more are all essential to preparing to move on from high school. Cheyenne Virtual School seniors and EHS Juniors who plan to graduate early need to pay attention to the deadlines as well.

Cap and gowns – 2022 EHS graduates need to order caps and gowns right away at urherffjones.com. The early deadline is December 12, and final payment is due January 1. There will also be an in-school ordering event on November 4, from 10:00-4:00. When you place your cap and gown order, you can also order other memorabilia, like 2022 graduate t-shirts, lanyards, hats, and more.

Senior Photos - All EHS graduates are asked to submit a Senior Photo by October 22 to replace the standard school ID photos in the yearbook. The late deadline is November 19. Graduates must use the link found on the East High homepage. Click on Yearbook Info and then the Upload Your Senior Photo link. You will receive a confirmation email.

Count Your Many Blessings

A number of us would be familiar with the words of this hymn. Perhaps even our mothers would quote it to us when we were tempted to complain about something. One reason for doing this is to remind ourselves that we really are very blessed.

The greatest part of our many blessings we take for granted, if we think of them at all. The other reason is a psychological one. By always focusing on the negative in life, you will very naturally become depressed, angry, cynical, etc. But let us focus on the first reason. To count your blessings is at first an exercise of the will. Eventually, blessed creatures of habit that we are, it can become a normal thing for us and we will no longer have to devote so much will power to it. Indeed, we may not even have to think about it. It will have become our new default.

One thing that has helped me in this journey, and I am still learning and have by no means attained, is to look at those less fortunate (by out finite standards) than myself. I have poor eyesight and have worn glasses since the age of 6. Without them, I am next thing to helpless. I could envy my friends who were born with 20/20 and let it fill me with bitterness and resentment, or I could remember the fact that my sight can be corrected.

There are those who are blind, and there is nothing they can do about it.

My hearing is not awardwinning. That is the result of loud rock music in my younger years, the use of power tools and equipment without the proper protection, and various and sundry other things.

I could be upset about it.

Or, I could remember that a great deal of it is my fault and that I don’t need hearing aids as yet. And even if I did, the hearing aids would completely fix my issues. There are those out there whose hearing issues are far worse.

Some will never hear, or never hear again. Some have permanent ringing in their ears, caused by tinnitus. You begin to see the game? You can treat it that way. Take it as a challenge to see how many things you can come up with to be grateful for.

Was your meal at the restaurant not quite what you ordered? At least you ate.

There are thousands of refugees from countries such as Afghanistan, Haiti, Syria, etc. That didn’t. Do you have a place to live?

Those refugees don’t. Do you live in constant fear of losing life, limb, loved ones or possessions to violence perpetrated by civil war, genocide or such like? Blessed and fortunate creature, you have much to be grateful for.

As you begin this journey in your life ( and you must make the choice, none can do it for you), remember the Source of all true blessings. “Every good gift and every prefect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights.” James 1:17a. “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.” Psalm 103:2. And of course, remember the greatest blessing of all: Jesus Christ. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16. Municipal Building Closed Prescription Drug Until Further Notice Take Back Day The Municipal Building, 2101 O’Neil Avenue, will be closed until further notice for boiler repairs.

Non-profit organizations that support community development and work to improve residents’ quality of life are invited to apply for grants from the GFWC Women’s Civic League of Cheyenne.

Funding for these grants comes from the annual Christmas House Project.
