Public Schools Chronicle What’s the Deal with Barstool Sports Accounts

The last two years has seen the rise of high school Barstool Sports accounts. These Instagram accounts mimic those of the sports journalism company Barstool Sports, but are not affiliated with them, and more importantly, not affiliated with the high schools. The accounts are run, usually anonymously, by students and aim to promote school spirit around sports. They publish posts about games, congratulate wins, and “almost friday” posts. Today, most Wyoming high schools have a Barstool account, including the three in Cheyenne.

Some of the most popular posts from these accounts are “almost friday” posts. These posts are published on Thursdays, and feature fun and light hearted pictures submitted by other students. They build excitement around the end of the week, when many big sports games happen. These types of posts are pretty universal among high school Barstool accounts.

While posts like the “almost friday” post build school community in a positive way, some people have suggested that some of these Barstool accounts take it a step too far when posting about other school’s teams. They often single out players and make fun of their

appearance or personal life. For example one post on the page @Barstooleastofficial from around three weeks ago features an image of a cartoon hippo being compared to a player on Kelly Walsh High School’s football team, the same post features pictures of another player’s family. Some people argue that these posts are just normal sports trash talk and there isn’t a problem with it, others argue that this is cyber bullying. As much as schools would like to try and censor the posts being made under their name, the accounts are usually run anonymously and schools have no jurisdiction over who posts on social media.

While high school Barstool accounts can foster school spirit and community through lighthearted content like “almost Friday” posts, they also raise concerns about the fine line between playful banter and harmful behavior. As these accounts grow in popularity the conversation surrounding them has grown too, the LCSD1 school board had a meeting last year to discuss concerns. @Southside_Bar stool initially agreed to give a comment, but they ultimately stopped responding.

“Tracking DNA Clues to Discover a Birth Mother” is a free, educational program presented by the Cheyenne Genealogical and Historical Society on Tuesday, November 12 in the Sunflower Room of the Laramie County Library at 2200 Pioneer Avenue. The gathering starts at 6:15pm with a short business meeting followed by the program, which begins promptly at 6:45pm. Glenn York will outline a case-study of a female who was adopted at birth in the early 1950s, and discuss the steps used to analyze her DNA matches, and how those matches and family tree information were used to identify her birth parent’s families.

The Office of Youth Alternatives Foster Grandparent Program is looking for tutor/mentors that are 55 years and older to work with children who need extra support in a supervised classroom setting for the School Year 2024-2025. Foster Grandparents make a difference in the lives of children in our community and earn an average of $300 per month in a non-taxable stipend. Some qualifications apply. Surveillance video shows two unknown subjects entered the location and attempted to cash a fraudulent check.
