By Lia Lovering & Bella Valdez On October 14 and 15, Triumph High School students visited Tom Kainer Education Center to learn important skills like equipment management, planning of ethical activities, and ways to make healthy lifestyle decisions. The outdoor living class offered at Triumph is enriched with outdoor recreation and tourism in Wyoming which allowed the students to learn outdoor survival, geocaching, and cooking. Before the trip, students gathered lists and materials to ensure they were prepared which included tents, clothing, and food. When the students arrived, they learned to set up their tents, make a campfire, and explore the surrounding areas. Camper, Camren Galven, shared that his favorite part was sitting with my friends at the camp-

fire and talking. That night the students made pork chops for dinner and headed off to bed. Another camper, Brody Maas, shared about the weather Saturday morning saying, “Waking up was a struggle because it was so cold.” Nevertheless, the students made pancakes and hot cocoa the next morning then headed home. The overall goal of the trip was to enrich students with knowledge in outdoor living careers, practice survival activities, and provide them with fun memories and skills that they can take with them for life. In conclusion, Triumph High School works hard to educate and bring students together with recreational activities outside the four classroom walls.

Career exploraTion leads To inTernships

By JJ Smith & Bree Hughes Triumph High’s English 10 teacher, Joanne Pruitt, initiated a project-based career exploration unit of study in her class. This learning unit involved students getting a chance to explore different career fields in a fun, interactive way. Pruitt states, “A professional goal of mine is to make English Language Arts interesting through making it real-world applicable. When curriculum calls for a research paper, I try to think of innovative writing prompts and project-based learning opportunities that align with our curriculum.” The standards that this project covers are to “Conduct Short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a questions including a self-generated question, like analyze how an author draws on and transforms source material in a specific work. Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text.” This unit gives students a real tangible opportunity to research and apply to their lives. Pruitt was able to invite seventeen guest speakers into her classroom to share and inform about each of their professional career fields. The careers that were covered consist of Healthcare, IT, Real estate, Veterinarian, Project management, Food Services, Law, Construction, Cosmetology, Architecture, and Retail. The process of getting the guest speakers is working together with the staff at our school, parents and friends within the community, as well as our Career and Technical Education Department within the District; we were able to compile an extensive list of local professionals. Pruitt states, “I wanted my students to have the opportunity to network and gain insight from local professionals. Hopefully this project-based unit will create contacts, gain knowledge, and experience in a career Gia Spezzano posing with her internship host. they will hopefully go into after high

school. “Lastly, Pruitt states, “I am excited to report that as of last week, one student was offered a job position within her field of study. The student was able to take their background knowledge from their research paper, use the networking skills she learned in class, and rocked their interview!” Zach Koonce, a student in Pruitt’s English class participated in an internship at Safeway. Koonce reflects upon his experience saying, “My experience at Safeway was a lot of labor and hard work. I learned that it can be very repetitive work but with normal hours.” Koonce also added, “I like the idea of having a guest speaker because they inform you of what you actually do in that job or field with hands on info instead of on online resources. I would recommend other students to take internships because it gives real incite on what you do before getting a job.” EJ Torres recalled, “Going into my internship, there was a lot of nerves because you’re the only person there and I’m a very clumsy person, so I didn’t know if I’d do well.” One guest speaker Pruitt brought in was an intern animator for Pixar. Torres shared, “It was nice to hear from someone in a career field I was actually interested in.” One piece of advice from Torres was “Don’t be scared to ask questions.” Gia Spezzano shared her opinion on internships reiterating, “You can learn a lot and it could be great help when planning for the future. A CUIRASS is a piece of armor that covers the chest and stomach, or TORSO. As well as a noun, it is also used as a verb. So, a soldier can be CUIRASSED with ornate armor. ARMORERS can go about CUIRASSING the wealthiest knights. A CUIRASS consists of a BREASTPLATE and a back plate. Foot soldiers wore HAUBERKS made out of mail, rather than CUIRASSES. A HAUBERK, also called a BYRNIE, was lighter than the CUIRASS, although still quite heavy. Because armor was so heavy, a SQUIRE was needed to help the knight put it on.
