Students attend space camp for visually impaired

Laramie County School District 1 students trav eled to Huntsville, Alabama for the Space Camp for Interested Visually Impaired Students (SCIVIS).

The participants were East High School student Kaden Baird, who received a scholar ship from the Northrop-Grumman Corporation, and McCormick Junior High School student Joey Power, who received a scholarship from Eschenbach Optik.

SCIVIS is an annual event attended by students with visual impairments and their vision specialists. This year the space camp was held in September. It is a five day and night education al adventure at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

According to LCSD1 Vision Specialist Krystal Johnston, who chaperoned for the trip, the students were able to enjoy many activities.

“Joey and Kaden were in two different age groups and participated in different activities based on their age,” Johnston said. “They were able to experience a variety of space simulators, participate in missions, build a model rocket, participate in ropes courses and team-building activities, listen to guest speakers with vision impairments that now work for NASA, and they met peers from all over the world that share sim ilar visual impairments. Kaden was in the advanced group, and he was able to scuba dive.”

Baird said space camp had an impact on his life. He said he enjoyed traveling to a different place, experiencing hands-on activities and meeting new people from all over the world. His favorite activity was scuba diving, which simulated zero gravity. Baird said he wore scuba gear and went 35 meters down on a ladder.

Power said his favorite part of the space camp was the mis sions. He was able to act as the commander of a shuttle mission. Power also made small rockets and launched them, and went into a 40-feet-deep pool to build things with a team. Power said he wants to be teacher when he grows up because he likes to help others.

“Both boys said they made lasting friendships while at space camp,” Johnston said. “They learned so much about STEM, about working together as a team, and practicing skills of independent living for the week.”

Johnston said she found the experience to be life changing as she met vision professionals from all over the world.

“I was honored to represent Wyoming with these two young men,” Johnston said. “They were respectful and inquisitive learn ers. Both boys ensured the safety of other group members and assisted peers when they were struggling. I received countless compliments about Joey and Kaden throughout the week.”

Power helped with researching about the SCIVIS, all-expensepaid scholarships and getting funding for Johnston’s airfare. Additionally, the Cheyenne Sun rise Lions Club, Wyoming Lions Club and Pine Bluffs Lions Club provided funding. Cheyenne Sunrise Lions Club President James Reynolds, who is a former Gilchrist Elementary principal, even picked Johnston up from the airport.

Courtney Power said, “I think it would be great in terms of community support and support from the state if there were Wyoming businesses who are willing to step forward and sponsor Wyoming visually-im paired students.”

This is the first year LCSD1 students got the opportunity to participate in space camp;

Johnston said she hopes it won’t be the last. They are planning to return next year with more stu dents and vision specialists by applying for scholarships to help fund the trip. The space camp is open to 4th through 12th grade vision-impaired students.

Power and Baird said they both want to return to space camp next year and would encourage vision-impaired students to join them. One of the activities they participated in was trading pins and badges with other students from around the world, so this year they are starting early to collect pins and badges from Wyoming to trade with other students at space camp next year.
