The Laramie County School District 1 Report to Stakeholders | Cheyenne, Wyoming

LCSD1 works to ensure students needs are met

fflerbach Elementary’s former Principal Matt Schlagel is now Laramie County School District 1’s new MultiTiered System of Supports (MTSS) Administrator. The position was created by using the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES) funding that the district received. Schlagel explained his job involves working with K–12 district schools on the MTSS intervention-based framework, which offers a system of supports. Schlagel said the framework implements a robust system academically, emotionally and behaviorally to meet the needs of students. Depending on the student, MTSS provides instruction at different levels or tiers, with the goal to increase student achievement. Schlagel works with teachers and principals to develop a systematic approach to meet students’ unique needs within each building. “MTSS isn’t new to our school district,” Schlagel said. “We’ve been working on implementing a pyramid of interventions for schools for some time.” However, he said MTSS has really come into play this year and he believes the pandemic generated the need to concentrate on the benefits. He believes some students have begun school with possible learning loss and academic challenges. By utilizing MTSS strategies, schools can determine where a student’s gap in knowledge has occurred. A plan of action can be initiated, thereby strengthening the student’s learning. “When I visit with a school, we identify all of the resources we have available, both tangible and intangible, to meet their students’ needs,” Schlagel said. “We strive to align those resources and get them into the hands of kids who need them the most.” Schlagel said this year, each district school is creating an MTSS school improvement plan and writing action steps on how to better use their student resources. MTSS may vary in each district school, but the following outlines the basic goals: Tier 1: All students receive instruction focused on grade-level standards and expectations and schools monitor how they are progressing. Teachers use differentiated instruction to meet unique student needs.

Tier 2: For students failing to make adequate progress with Tier 1 instruction, Tier 1 and Tier 2 interventions are provided. With Tier 2, the school will address more specific needs of the students and review this with parents. Intervention for the student will be offered in a small group setting. Tier 3: For students who haven’t achieved their goals in the small group Tier 2 intervention, the school provides individualized interventions on a frequent basis. Tier 3 interventions will be provided in addition to Tier 1 instruction. “A smart person once told me MTSS is like a garden that you never quit tending,” Schlagel said. “We look at the universal supports that every student gets within that school building, then we monitor their progress. More than 4,000 locations will open to collect Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts for the Samaritan’s Purse project. Volunteers are preparing to collect shoebox gifts during National Collection Week, Monday-Monday, November 15 though 22, offering a curb-side option. Operation Christmas Child has been collecting and delivering shoebox gifts filled with school supplies, hygiene items and fun toys to children worldwide since 1993. This is a project that everyone can still be a part of, even with COVID-19 restrictions.
