East High School News Thunderbird Football and Volleyball Fall Just Short of Championship Goals By Thunderbolt Staff

In the ďŹ rst round of the WHSAA Class 4A football playoffs, two heavyweight contenders faced off. Casper Natrona traveled south to take on our East High Thunderbirds. And, like so many meetings before, it was a battle. The Mustangs marched 80 yards on their opening drive, and easily took a 7-0 lead when senior Dante Wallace got around the left side and scored from 8 yards out. The TBirds were a little shocked, but not shaken. On their opening possession, the T-Birds responded when junior quarterback Graedyn Buell rolled to his right and found senior Ox Schroeder wide open for a 60-yard touchdown. Schroeder then missed the extra-point attempt, and East went into halftime trailing 6-7. While the ďŹ rst half was a battle, the third quarter was a track meet. The T-Birds blasted the Mustangs with 15 points on a Cole Micheli reception with a 2-point conversion and a Chance Aumiller 78-yard touchdown catch. Nathan Rayl caught a 9-yard pass in the 4th to help the T-Birds to the 35-14 victory. The second round wasn’t so kind to the Thunderbirds. East traveled north to take on the Thunder Basin Bolts, who had beaten the T-Birds, 31-30, in the third game of the season. In a game of power vs. power, the Bolt and Birds blasted each other time and time again, but neither could ďŹ nd consistency and the end zone. It took until 4:54 remaining in the ďŹ rst quarter for a score when Thunder Basin’s Tanner Richards scored on an 18-yard reception. The Bolts missed the extra point. Richards scored again early in the second quarter to put the Bolts up 13-0. Then, with just under 6 minutes left in the half, Richards scored again from 6 yards out to bring the Bolts’ lead to 20-0. East only needed 41 seconds on their ensuing drive to ďŹ nally get on the board when Chance Aumiller hit Jackson Hesford for a touchdown, but the extra point was no good. Thunder Basin scored again before the half to lead 27-6 going into the locker room. Hesford caught his second score of the night on a 12-yard pass from Graedyn Buell, followed by a 2-point conversion to bring the T-Birds closer, 27-14. In typical East High fashion, the Birds began to pick up speed and got a 13-yard pass to Christian Anderton from Buell to trail 27-21. Thunder Basin had their chance seal the deal but failed on a 4th and inches with 47 seconds left, giving East one more shot. But an interception with 34 seconds left by Thunder Basin’s Blaine Allen sealed the victory for the Bolts, 27-21, and advances them into the championship game against Sheridan, in Laramie, on November 16. In the gym, the East High volleyball team rolled to another conference championship, beating Laramie 25-17,

25-14, 19-25, 25-12. The Lady Thunderbirds dominated Laramie by focusing on their 6-foot-2 sophomore hitter Alexis Stucky, who was named 4A East Conference player of the year. As the saying goes, “You can’t shut her down, you can only hope to contain her,â€? and the Thunderbirds did all they could to keep Stucky under control. “She’s unstoppable,â€? Quigley said in an interview with wyosports.net. “She hits over the top of the block, so just making adjustments on that. Their outside, Jessica (Crane), she was a dominant force against us last time. We went into the match knowing that those were the two girls that led their team, and we tried to control them as much as possible. But, at the same time, we wanted to play our type of game and keep the tempo that we’ve been working on all week.â€? As expected in a match between two of the state’s better programs, it was war. There were 11 lead changes and 10 ties throughout the ďŹ rst 25 points of the match. East ďŹ nally used an 8-0 run to take a 20-13 lead and the eventual ďŹ rst game win. The rest of the night played out just like the ďŹ rst game with point-by-point battles, followed by big runs and drama. Rightfully so, the gym was full of energy and emotion as the Thunderbirds posted the victory and a #1-ranking at State. In their ďŹ rst match at State, The Lady Thunderbirds posted a four-set win over Riverton, 25-18, 25-15, 19-25, 25-22. They then ran into a red-hot Thunder Basin team, who shocked the T-Birds and knocked them into the consolation bracket with a 19-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-15, 15-4 victory. In the consolation semi-ďŹ nals, East High dug deep for a tough 25-23, 25-19, 20-25, 18-25, 15-13 victory over Star Valley. In the consolation championships, East once again faced the Riverton Wolverines. The seniors decided they would go out as champions, even if it was short of their season goals. Madison Blaney led the way for No. 3-ranked East with 13 kills, while Shae Halls ended with six kills, and Sloane Danni posted a team-best two aces and added nine digs. Senior Ky Buell registered a team-best 27 assists paired with nine digs. “It’s bittersweet. I’m done, you know?â€? Danni said, in an interview with wyosports.net. “It’s sad, but I was happy to end in third. I was relieved to know that I left it all out there.â€? While third place wasn’t what the Thunderbirds hoped for, sweeping an opponent for third place was a good way to end a great season.

Toys For Tots will again collect new, unwrapped toys at the 2019 Cheyenne Christmas Parade on Saturday, November 30, at 5:30pm, in downtown Cheyenne. Photo Contest and Exhibit The Community Recreation and Events Department “Standing Outâ€? Photo Contest and Exhibit will be held January 9-February 12 at the Cheyenne Civic Center, 510 West 20th Street. The “Shadowsâ€? theme is designed to showcase the beauty/illusion of what shadows cast upon the eye and imagination. Photographers may enter in a variety of categories. The contest is limited to the ďŹ rst 150 photos. Cash awards and rosette ribbons will be awarded. A reception will be held Sunday, January 8, 5:30pm-7:00pm, at the Cheyenne Civic Center, hosted by the City of Cheyenne Programs and Facilities Division. Brochure/entry forms with detailed information may be picked up at the Kiwanis Community House, 4603 Lions Park Drive. Registration will be held from December 2-January 3.
