East High AFJROTC Readies to Make Its Mark on the National Scene

Every year, the East High JROTC program set goals to become bigger and better than ever. And 2022 may set records. Whether putting in time serving the community, supporting T-Bird spirit, competing for another title, or presenting the colors at a sporting event, the JROTC program is one of the region’s best.

Central High School News

The EHS Color Guard has proudly presented the colors at four Thunderbird football games and the Muley Foundation Annual Dinner., as well as committing themselves to several Veteran Day out reach presentations, teaching the history of the flag and flag etiquette at Carey JHS, Alta Vista grade school, and Henderson grade school.

South High School News

In competition, the Color Guard finished in 2nd place at the Central High School Shoot & Scoot. The Cyber-Patriot Team has had two competitions thus far this year and finished 22nd out of 831 teams in the world at the last competition, which was the highest finish in program history.

The group has already logged over 600 community service project hours and over 1,000 Leadership Development Program Competition & Practice hours. They are on pace in both areas to set the all-time program record for East High AFJROTC in a school year.

The program’s community service commitments have been extraordi nary. Included in their long list of contributions are serving as Open House Escorts, assisting with the Henderson Fall/Halloween Carnival, volunteer ing at the Cheyenne Greek Festival, 40 morning and 40 evening flag details for East High, four school parking lot clean-up events at East, and assisting with flag placement during the Veterans Day Flags on Graves event.

The JROTC recently conducted a Map Reading/Orienteering Class along with a Veteran’s Day Flag Vigil & Flag Folding Demonstration and

The Drill Team competed at the Na trona Mustang Meet against the Marine Corps Team and other JROTC teams in a tri-state Drill Comp of eight teams. They finished 1st Place Armed Drill Team, 2nd Place Inspection Team, 3rd Place Unarmed Drill Team.

The National Championship Competing Marksmanship team returned three starters to this year’s squad, plus 17 additional shooters trying to become the 4th starter and alternate this year. The squad’s first competition was on November 13, and they are awaiting official results that will set the team. If the team scores well enough, the regional competition is in Utah this February.

The JLAB (High School Level Knowledge Bowl) team has been practicing for weeks and will compete nationally on November 17 in an AFJROTC National Knowledge Bowl.

The 51st Annual Military Ball is scheduled for December 3.

East Football Comes Up Just Short in State Title Game

When everyone knows your football team is good, good things are sup posed to happen. The East High Thunderbirds spent the 2022 season as one of the top two teams in 4A football and surprised very few to be making another appearance in the state title game.

East finished the regular season ranked third in Class 4A in both total defense (289 yards per game) and scoring defense (19.7 points per game). The T-Birds also lead the state in scoring offense (47.3 ppg) and were second in total offense (439 ypg). On top of that, the team maintained a top ranking all season, with the only blemish being a crazy 42-39 loss to the Sheridan Broncs. After a season like that, a state championship was the only expectation.

Speech

Cheyenne East High prides itself on winning. From the welding lab to the football field to the stage, it doesn’t matter. T-Birds learn the winning ways early. And the Speech and Debate novices are already showing they’re ready to keep right on winning. The Cheyenne East Speech and Debate team kicked off the 22-23 season with record-breaking results from four early tournaments.

The program’s newest competitors displayed brains, power, and cour age at both East High Novice competitions.

Both varsity and novice teammates competed at the first combined Novice-Varsity tournament in Rock Springs earlier this month, facing off against 12 different teams from around Wyoming. The East High students broke existing team records for this competition with nearly 50 students placing in various events. Multiple East students earned “Triple Threat”

Unfortunately, the Broncs were two games better, beating the Thunder birds a second time, but this time for the state title, in Laramie, on November 12, winning 34-23.

Cheyenne East finished with 383 yards on offense. Cam Hayes was 30-40 for 278 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Drew Jackson had 62 yards rushing and one touchdown. Garet Schlabs caught 11 passes for 79 yards and one touchdown. Jakob Culver added eight catches for 111 yards and a touchdown.

Keeping with tradition, the novices made waves again with a record number of placings at the South Novice tournament.

The team is headed to several more overnight tournaments over the next month.

East High hosts the largest speech and debate tournament in Wyoming, called the “Holiday Classic,” right before winter break. Zonta Club of Cheyenne is holding its Silent Witness March on the morning of November 19 Anyone who wishes to participate is welcome to join by gathering in front of the Wyoming Supreme Court Building, 2301 Capitol Avenue, no later than 9:45am. They will walk to the Laramie County Li brary, 2200 Pioneer Avenue, with the silhouettes of victims of domestic violence from Wyoming. The silhouettes will then be placed at the Library, with each victim’s story, to allow the public to remember these victims and learn more about the horrors of domestic violence in our community. The silhou ettes will be available for viewing through the first week of December.
