Trees for Charity Cheyenne Firefighters Local 279 is once again selling Christmas trees for charity. Trees will be on sale Saturday December 6th through Sunday, December 14th. GSA Promotes Acceptance Elle Cole Staff Writer

Times are changing in the state of Wyoming as well as here at Central. On Friday, October 17th U.S District Court Judge, Scott Skavdahl, ruled Wyoming’s ban on Gay Marriage as being unconstitutional, making Gay marriage legal throughout all of Wyoming. Last year, Elizabeth Edington, social studies teacher, started sponsoring the Gay Straight Alliance club here at Central and the feedback has been great. GSA hopes to create a foundation in which individuality is accepted and desired. “GSA was established to create a safe place for students to be themselves through support and advocacy of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Questioning (LGBTQ) issues” Edington says “we hope to encourage appreciation of diversity and individuality.” They would like to go to other forums at Central to promote advocacy. They are planning to go to the Shepard Symposium on Social Justice in April 2015 at the University Of Wyoming to show how Central is promoting justice. November 10th-November 17th GSA held Hard Conversations Week. During the week students and faculty were able to put pieces of paper in boxes placed throughout the school that signified what their ‘hard conversation’ was. Each day had a theme such as “Love is Louder Than…” day or “Walk a Mile in Someone Else’s Shoes” day. The goal of this week was to have conversations that are otherwise difficult for

students and faculty to have. Gay Straight Alliance has 3 purposes: education, support and advocacy. “We hope to make Central High School a safer school for LGTBQ students as well as students in general,” says Cara Carpenter, senior and Gay Straight Alliance facilitator. “Spreading awareness and acceptance throughout the school and making the school a safe environment for all students no matter what sexual orientation or gender is our goal” adds GSA member Katie Owens, junior. “Education of acceptance is important at Central and in Wyoming,” says Chris Folsom, senior, a GSA member who recently moved here from Alaska and was a member of GSA there. Folsom compares the two GSA’s as being different but with the same goal. “GSA helps spread awareness of diversity at Central and in the world around us which is important to have here” says GSA member Jason Flynn, freshman. “Although the name assumes that membership is limited to members of the LGBTQ community, anyone and everyone is welcome to join us,” Edington adds, “we are probably the only club that’s main goal is to be obsolete, we want all students to have a safe place with staff and peer support.” GSA has formal meetings on Wednesdays from 3:15-4:00 as well as on Fridays to check in with each other from 2:45-4:00, both of which anyone is welcome to attend.
