IF CHRIST SHOULD COME AT CHRISTMAS
“That day and hour knoweth no man, no, not even the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” (Matthew 24:36) Yet that very uncertainty forces us to reflect on how we would fare should He come when we least expect Him. What if He should come on Christmas morning? How many would be too drunk to get out of bed? “Every eye shall see Him” (Revelation 1:7) and come to judgement, drunk or sober. What would He think of the Christmas lie: “See what Santa brought!”?
Would Jesus be pleased with all our gift-giving? Should we be spending our time (and our credit) from now until Christmas buying more gifts? Jesus taught us how we ought to give: “If ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same. And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have he?...When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbors, lest they also bid thee again, and recompense be made thee. But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee; for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.” — words of Jesus. Would Christ, the Light of the World, be impressed with our display of lights? Christmas lights do not make light. They decorate the darkness. Just like the “Christmas spirit” dresses up such sin as holiday drunkenness. “And this is the condemnation that Light is come into the world, and men love darkness rather than light, because their deeds are evil.” (John 3:19) “If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!” (Matthew 6:23) The mad rush of Christmas gets madder by the year. What was once a day has become a season starting at Halloween and ending sometime after the New Year. The profiteers are the merchants. The losers are all those who catch the “Christmas spirit.”
There must surely be a sensible way to “Thank God for His unspeakable gift” (2 Corinthians 9:15). How about just thanking Him daily, and best of all, showing our sincerity by giving Him the gift He most covets? But what might that be? The wisemen you will remember brought gold, frankincense, and myrrh, symbolizing God’s gift to us in His Son. Gold, the priceless gift of salvation. Frankincense, an offering for sin. Myrrh, a spice used in burial, symbolized His historic, human death for us. What gift should we offer Him in return? Only one gift will qualify. Only one is worthy and acceptable. “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” (Romans 12:1) He came once as a baby. Now He’s coming as judge. What would fill your days between now and this Christmas, if you knew that your life would be judged, and your destiny decided on that day?

An Exchange Student’s View on Thanksgiving

America’s Thanksgiving is unlike anything I have experienced before. In Sweden, we don’t have a holiday like this; focused on gratitude and family, with such a rich history behind it. The entire atmosphere in the days leading up to Thanksgiving felt warm and inviting. People everywhere were talking about travel plans, visiting family, and seasonal recipes. It was new to me to see so much priority placed on being together with loved ones, such as family and friends, especially over such a large meal.

The dinner itself was a feast. I tried turkey for the first time, along with stuffing, white gravy, pecan pie, creamed corn, green bean casserole, and pumpkin pie. Some of the foods were very strange at first, but I kind of liked them in the end. It might seem peculiar to an American perspective, but I ended up liking
mashed potatoes the most. The texture, simplicity, versatility, and flavor are what I liked most. What I found most touching and special was the tradition of going around the table to share what we were thankful for. It felt so personal, and it made me realize how often we overlook gratitude in daily life.
Another unique part of Thanksgiving was the focus on history. My host family really tried to teach me about Thanksgiving, which gave me a deeper understanding. Learning about the Pilgrims, Native Americans, and the first Thanksgiving made the holiday feel meaningful, even though I am an outsider. It is not just about food, it is about reflection, connection, and being thankful for what we have. It is a holiday I will always remember.

Water Tank Mural Project Announces Call for Artists
The Cheyenne Water Tank Mural Project review committee has released its call for artists for a project that would see murals painted on two water tanks in north Cheyenne. Interested artists would be expected to complete the project in 2025, with a dedication in 2026 for Cheyenne’s America 250 celebration. Artists must be Wyoming residents and can respond to the request for proposals online through Arts Cheyenne at artschey enne.com/water-tank-mural-project. Information concerning materials, mural subjects and review/ selection criteria are also available at that website. The Water Tank Mural Project seeks to bring art to both of the Board of Public Utilities’ water towers just north of Storey Boulevard. The Widows and Widowers group would like to welcome new members who are needing to move on after the loss of their life partner. Group lunch twice weekly, once after Tuesday meeting and 2:00pm lunch on Sundays. They get together to share, learn, have fun and laughter. Permanent “Vietnam Wall” in Cheyenne
“Veterans Remembrance Memorial” is accepting donations and sponsorships to place a permanent Vietnam Wall here in Cheyenne, WY. The total cost of The Wall is $175,000 plus $25,000 for the trailer, which also serves as an education center for our POW-MIA and Veterans. This Vietnam Wall is an 80% replica of the wall in Washington DC. The wall is 365 feet long and 8 feet high, and will have lights and flags, along with benches. It will be a special place to hold ceremonies and honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country and freedom, and help those that have brothers, sisters or family members whose names are on it. If you would like to become a sponsor: your company or name will be on the permanent sponsor plaque and a personal sponsor plaque for you or your company. Sponsorship donation amounts are Sergeant $1,000, Captain $2,500, Colonel $5,000, and General $10,000 or more. This will also help in bringing visitors to our great city. The Office of Youth Alternatives Foster Grandparent Program is looking for tutor/mentors that are 55 years and older to work with children who need extra support in a supervised classroom setting for the School Year 2024-2025.
