Grace Enstad, Marla Rodriguez, Robbie Gonzalez Students and staff at South High enjoy the holiday season, but what do we all celebrate? Well, there are many ways to go about celebrating the Holidays and South just so happens to know all about them! Holiday celebrations are a great way to get rid of those pesky winter blues that we all go through, and it’s also a nice way to get closer with family and build traditions. There are major festivities like Christmas and Hannukah, but we also have ones that are less known, however they are still just as important. There are many reasons for honoring the holiday of your choice, some observe because of religion, others celebrate because of traditions, but we all simply just want to be happy with our family during the chilly season. Diversity is one of the huge things that South is known for and to us, that is huge. South believes that every person’s uniqueness is worth loving and accepting so let’s take the time to learn and understand the backgrounds of the different holidays that are cherished here. We all must be familiar with the famous holiday named Christmas, which comes with a jolly old Santa Claus, but what roots does this day come from? According to Brittanica.com, “Christian festival celebrating the birth of Jesus. The English term Christmas (“mass on Christ’s day”) is of fairly recent origin. The earlier term Yule may have derived from the Germanic jōl or the AngloSaxon geōl, which referred to the feast of the winter solstice. The corresponding terms in other languages—Navidad in Spanish, Natale in Italian, Noël in French—all probably denote nativity. The German word Weihnachten denotes “hallowed night.” Since the early 20th century, Christmas has also been

a secular family holiday, observed by Christians and non-Christians alike, devoid of Christian elements, and marked by an increasingly elaborate exchange of gifts. In this secular Christmas celebration, a mythical figure named Santa Claus plays the pivotal role.” They said it better than anyone could, but as you can see, Christmas is mainly derived from the Christian religion. However, non-Christians also like taking part in the festive day and because of that, it has become the most popular holiday celebrated in the U.S. Next, we have the very famous holiday named Hannukah. Hannukah is a celebrate Jewish religion on the 25th day of Kislev which is in the Hebrew calendar. We also have Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa is celebrated by African American’s and is celebrated on December 26 to January 1st. There are many others as well. Majority of the people here at South celebrate Christmas but there are a few who celebrate other holidays. According to a poll people had filled out 4% of people observe Hannukah. 2% of people celebrate advent.

It includes a snippet on each day noting “what happened and where.” The tidbits range from the serious to the unbelievable, but all newsworthy in their day! Photographs from individuals, families, museums, newspapers, libraries, and other organizations are welcome to be submitted. Photographs must be at least 5 inches tall by 7 inches wide landscape format or be able to be cropped to that ratio. Photographs, either physical or a digital scan at 600 dpi, must be received by February 1, 2024. People, location, and, if possible, the activity, should be identified with submission. Original photographs will be returned. Final photographs will be selected by the Wyoming Historical Society’s Calendar committee. CHPB 2023 Christmas Ornament

The Cheyenne Historic Preservation Board, CHPB, is proud to announce the release of the 2023 Christmas ornament featuring the dome of the Wyoming State Capitol. This ornament is the fifth in a series of ornaments featuring historic structures in Cheyenne. Sales of the ornaments help fund historic preservation efforts in the city. The gold leaf dome of the Capitol is a Wyoming icon. Attached to each ornament is an actual flake of the gold leaf that at one time graced the Capitol dome. The Office of Youth Alternatives Foster Grandparent Program is looking for tutor/mentors that are 55 years and older to work with children in a classroom setting that need extra support.
