RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR ACROSS THE GLOBE

Americans celebrate the new year with champagne, fireworks, midnight kisses, and rousing renditions of Auld Lang Syne. And while new year’s celebrations vary worldwide, common themes include anticipating new beginnings, and embracing age old traditions, hoping that they will bring health and prosperity in the coming year. Let’s journey across the globe and explore our international neighbors’ customs.

We begin in Spain, where locals take part in the tradition of eating 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight. They eat one grape for each of the first 12 chimes after midnight in the hopes that this will result in a year filled with good fortune. And the first step of the new year better be the right one. Many Spaniards believe that the first step you take after midnight should be with the right foot. It's certainly worth a try.

In keeping with the steps theme, Scottish people believe that the first person who crosses the threshold of your home after midnight should be a dark-haired male if you wish to have good luck in the coming year. Why dark-haired men? When Scotland was invaded by the Vikings, the last thing they wanted to see was a fair-haired man bearing a giant axe. So, a dark-haired man paying you a visit came to symbolize opulence and success.

The Greeks believe that onions are a symbol of rebirth, so they hang this pungent vegetable on their doors in order to promote growth throughout the new year. They have long believed that the odorous onion is associated with the idea of continued development, always wanting to plant its roots and keep growing. In keeping with the food theme, ancient Greek mythology states that the pomegranate symbolizes fertility, life, and abundance. Just after midnight, Greeks smash a pomegranate against their door.

It is believed that the number of pomegranate seeds that end up scattered is in direct correlation to the amount of good luck that will visit the household.

In Italy, color is the thing. Italians traditionally wear red underwear to ring in the new year. The color red is associated with fertility, so they wear it in hopes of fertile crops or in hopes of conceiving children. They also firmly believe in the saying out with the old, and in with the new. Old pots and pans, clothes, and other unwanted items are thrown out the windows, symbolizing letting go of unhappiness in preparation for a bright future.

German festivities center around a unique activity known as BleigieBen, or lead pouring. Using the flames from a candle, each person melts a small piece of lead or tin and pours it into a container of cold water. The resulting shape is said to reveal the person’s fate for the upcoming year. For example, if the shape is round, good luck will roll your way. If it’s long like a sword, you will have great courage. If it resembles a frog, you will win the lottery. Of course, it’s open to interpretation, and you can always repeat the process for a different result.

Naturally, a French New Year’s Eve celebration kicks off with a glass of champagne and some foie gras. The French are known for rich food and romanticism. Many French people partake in elaborate feasts with up to 15 courses. At midnight, everyone shares a kiss under a sprig of gui (mistletoe). On New Year’s Day, the streets are filled with parades.

Whether you break out champagne or red underwear, smash a pomegranate, chow down on grapes, melt some tin, or wish for a handsome dark-haired man, here’s to a fantastic 2022! May it be the best year ever!

South’s Five Days of Holidays Article and photo by Marcellus Young This year, the student senate decided to approach holiday celebrations from a bit of a different angle. Instead of awarding prizes just for participation in the spirit days (days when students and staff dress according to a theme like ugly sweater day or holiday colors day), for the Five Days of Holidays at South High School, kids won prizes for doing good things in addition to dressing up. Like other schools in LCSD 1, South uses the PBIS (Positive Behaviors Interventions and Supports) program to help students learn appropriate behaviors in school in order to help them learn and flourish. A feature of this program allows teachers

to award students points in an app on the iPad for positive behaviors, behaviors that support the HERD (Honorable Enthusiastic Responsible Determined) values at South, and this year, students won prizes during spirit week for dressing up in addition to other positive behaviors demonstrated throughout the week. Students were pleased with this melding of criteria and the week was very positive in terms of staff and student participation in both the spirit days and the awarding of points in the PBIS app. Sayde Primus, a sophomore at South, exclaimed, “The spirit week was fun and hilarious; I am very excited for it next year!”

Nightjar

NIGHTJARS, or NIGHTHAWKS, are nocturnal birds who are recognizable by having very short bills. They nest on the ground, and even sometimes ROOST on roads. They have RICTAL bristles – feathers growing around the mouth opening, or RICTUS. They are related to the POORWILL and the PAURAQUE. Some of them are “ MONTANE specialists,” meaning they live in the mountains.

Their plumage is CRYPTIC colored – resembling tree bark or leaves. Varieties of NIGHTJAR species are ENDEMIC to all parts of the world except Antarctica. This is an example of ENDEMISM – when a species is found only in one place.

The Cheyenne Dance Club is a non-profit club dedicated to the preservation of Big Band Music and Ballroom Dancing. Come join them for a fun filled evening of listening and dancing pleasure to the sound of the DEKette Orchestra on Saturday, January 8. Not sure how to dance? Take advantage of this month’s pre dance class offering in basic Cha Cha from 5:00pm-6:00pm. Treat yourself and that special someone to a dance lesson, dinner and dance all for one price or choose their a la carte attendance offers. Dance only will cost $35 a couple and $20 for singles. Dance lesson only is $5 per person, this does not include the dance. Dinner and dance will cost $87 for couples and $46 for singles. The dance lesson is free with any dinner meal purchase. The American Legion Post 6, 2001 East Lincolnway, Oratorical contest, which awards hundreds of dollars for scholarships to advance one’s education, is to be held at 1:00pm on January 15, at the Post.

The contest is open to students in the 9th through 12th grades and consists of oratory involving one’s knowledge of the U.S. Constitution. Students are judged on a prepared orientation of 8-10 minutes and an assigned extemporaneous presentation of 3-5 minutes.
