The T-Birds have gone 63-5 over the past two championship seasons. Despite the talented, hardworking individuals on the team, the Lady Thunderbirds would not be as highly-regarded if they didn’t stress playing as a team. Too often opponents focused their attention on Stellern, but soon discovered that was a mistake. The Lady Thunderbirds were loaded offensively. “We were such a strong hitting team that teams couldn’t just focus on stopping one person,â€? continued Stellern. “They could try and stop me but then we had Duquesne Moratzka, Marina Howard, Whitney Kailey, and Lindsey Grantz, who could all hurt them.â€? Cosette ďŹ nished her junior season with 280 kills, 96 blocks, 54 digs and a .534 kill percentage. Stellern is the third Lady Thunderbird to win the Gatorade Player of Year and is the ďŹ fth Wyoming player to repeat since the award was ďŹ rst handed out in 1995.

Freshman Marler Breaks 20-Year Old Record By Josh Ash Freshman MacKenzie Marler displayed the result of her hard work and dedication in the SaberCat Invitational by knocking off the long-standing school record cross country time. “I’ve put in a lot of hard work,â€? said Marler. “We practiced every day, ďŹ ve days a week, so that helped out.â€? The record for the East high girls cross country girls 5k was set 20 years ago. On October 4, Marler broke that record with a time of 18 minutes and 8.9 seconds at Fossil Ridge High School in Ft. Collins, CO. Marler started running back in junior high to stay in shape for soccer. Little did she know that in a couple of years she would hold a new record at East High. She now plans to keep breaking her own records as the

season continues. “I’m really happy I got the record. Now I want to keep getting my time down and breaking my own record,� said Marler, in an interview with www.wyosports.net. With Marler being in the top 10 ranked freshman in the nation, there are going to be high expectations for her seasons to come. “I just kept my calm the whole race.� said Marler. “I’m excited to see what all I can do in this sport.� State came fast for Marler. On October 24, the 4A state cross country meet was held in Sheridan, Wyoming. Marler ran a 5k in 18 minutes and 36 seconds to take second place behind Central’s Aubrey Frentheway. The girls placed 10th overall out of 11 teams.

For the last two years, East High volleyball has had the best team, and leader, in the state. Junior Cosette Stellern has helped lead her team to back-to-back state 4A state volleyball championships. The Lady Thunderbirds beat the Evanston Lady Red Devils (25-19, 26-24, 25-20) for the 2015 title and Kelly Walsh (25-20, 25-16, 24-26, 25-28, 15-12) for the 2014 title. Along with the state titles, Cosette has also picked up her fair share of individual awards as well, including Gatorade Player of the Year as both a sophomore and then again this year as a junior. “It was a huge honor to win it once. The City of Cheyenne Ice and Events Center is hoping to hold monthly non-profit nights and they are looking for interested organizations. The concept is that each month a non-proďŹ t organization will be showcased, and a portion of all drop-in proceeds will be given to the designated cause. This will be a great way to gain supporters and spread the word about what your organization does for the community, while also providing a fun setting for those in attendance. The Cheyenne Parks and Recreation Department are teaming up with Wyoming Service Dogs to offer drop-in dog classes on Sunday nights starting at 5:30pm, at Pioneer Park Center, 1331 Talbot Court. No need to sign up. Drop-in cost is $15 per night. Classes will start again on Sunday, February 21 and run through Sunday, March 20. The program is geared towards keeping your dog engaged with you through play and learning tricks and new behaviors. Each dog will be able to work at their appropriate level.
