Welcome To Cheyenne All Roads Lead to Cheyenne

On behalf of the City’s Governing Body and the residents of the city, I am pleased to welcome you to Cheyenne; Wyoming’s State Capitol. I believe you will ďŹ nd our city a pleasant place to live and visit. From its rough and tumble beginnings in 1867, when the population consisted of 600 construction workers, entrepreneurs and camp followMayor Rick Kaysen ers, Cheyenne has grown to approximately 65,000 residents of diversity. I trust you will ďŹ nd Cheyenneites to be friendly, hospitable and helpful. Cheyenne is named after the Cheyenne Tribe, and we are proud to carry that honor. Cheyenne has a multitude of cultural and recreational opportunities. Our Civic Center boasts a great theater season, hosts the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, and still offers numerous other productions throughout the year. The historic

Union PaciďŹ c Depot and Plaza is the crown jewel of the downtown. During the summer months, the plaza is “entertainment centralâ€? for the area. During our Wyoming winter, the Cheyenne Ice And Event Center is the home of hockey for all ages, ďŹ gure skating, laser tag as well as hosting several other events including the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Home and Garden Show, the Wyoming Stampede, and the Spring Festival. Our parks system is the envy of many similarly sized communities. The Youth Activity and Community Center (YAC) is located in the David R. Romero South Cheyenne Community Park. The YAC has become the gathering place for Cheyenne’s younger residents. Located in Lions Park, the Cheyenne-Kiwanis Community House, the Amphitheater and Cheyenne’s Botanic Gardens are used for reunions, weddings, Superday (our community’s celebration of National Parks and Recreation Month), activities and concerts. The Paul Smith Children’s Village at the Botanic Gardens is a fun and magical learning center with hands-on experiments, a secret garden and much, much more. The Village is fun for all ages. A children’s spray park, adjacent to the newly enhanced Cheyenne Aquatics Center, is great for kids to cool off on a summer’s day while the parents catch a few rays. Cheyenne boasts a 40 mile non-motorized Greenway path that allows hikers, bikers, skateboarders and strollers to navigate around the city, and the Greenway continues to grow. Or, you can visit the Clay Sturman Skate Park that includes expert and novice bowls, and several new streetscape skating features. Cheyenne has numerous public and private museums including the Wyoming State Museum, the Governor’s Mansion, and the Old West Museum. Although our State Capitol is not a museum, it is rich in history. The City of Cheyenne itself is inextricably linked with the military. In fact, the City was “bornâ€? on the same day that Fort D.A. Russell (now F. E. Warren Air Force Base) was selected as a site for an Army Post. Cheyenne is home of the Wyoming Air Guard and Army National Guard. As you can see, not only have military personnel and Cheyenne residents lived side-by-side, but have also worked together for the betterment of both the city and the military. Cheyenne welcomes and values our military neighbors who serve our country so admirably. For 120 years, Cheyenne has been the home of the “Daddy of ‘em All,â€? Cheyenne Frontier Days™. CFD™ is the largest outdoor rodeo in the nation and the pride of our residents. The “Daddyâ€? is staffed almost entirely by volunteers. These men and women are the backbone for the CFD™ experience which includes parades, pancake breakfasts, western art shows, Native American arts and culture, night shows, and of course, the famous, award-winning rodeo itself. Once again, I welcome you to Cheyenne – the “Magic City of the Plainsâ€?. Don’t hesitate to contact my ofďŹ ce at (307)6376300 if you have questions or if we can be of service. 2016 Guide to Frontier Days™ July 22-July 31, 2016

In its 120th year, Cheyenne Frontier Days™ revolves around the same element it did 120 years ago — the volunteer and a desire to preserve a part of Western history. It takes thousands of volunteers thousands of hours to put on the world’s largest ongoing, outdoor rodeo. They do it because it’s a fun contribution to their community. The approximately 400,000 people who come to Frontier Days™ will see a smattering of the Old West. From the carriages that roll past in the parades, to the tie-down competition, it’s a part of the West that continues through the efforts of volunteers using their free-time to put on an extravaganza of Western avor. It continues every year for visitors from all over the globe. They can step into the legendary Old West in historic Cheyenne, Wyoming. If past ďŹ gures hold true for Cheyenne Frontier Days™ (CFD™), this year all ďŹ fty states, plus twenty-three countries will be represented in ticket sales. It’s this kind of diverse audience that makes the hours of fence mending, barn building, entertainment planning, show scheduling and hours of haggling over the details worthwhile.

It’s this attention to detail that makes CFD™ the great event it is. Every year, after the last cowboy has packed up and headed for the next rodeo, the group of eleven volunteers known as the CFD™ General Committee start organizing their subcommittees and planning for the next year. They review what was right, what could be improved, and begin working for next year. Cheyenne Frontier Days™ is a year’s worth of planning and preparing by volunteers whose commitment to ten days in July is only rewarded by the smiles and appreciation of you, the visitor. So as they show you the West, remember their payment can only be shown in how much you enjoy the celebration, 120 years in the making!

Parades Reect the Spirit of the Frontier

The grand parades have been popular

with Cheyenne Frontier Days™ (CFD) audiences for over 119 years and 2016 promises to continue that trend. Four parades are scheduled during the week-long celebration. A rocket announces the start of each parade at 9 a.m. on the opening Saturday, Tuesday, Thursday, and ďŹ nal Saturday; and a procession of charming splendor begins. The CFD parades have evolved into a colorful pageant of the frontier West, mixing the nostalgia of yesterday with the excitement of today. The “Evolution of Transportationâ€? was developed for the parades in 1925, and from this beginning, subsequent committees have acquired over 50 horse-drawn and open-drawn vehicles by gift, purchase and loan. Favorites include: the stagecoach, sleigh, ambulance, meat wagon, depot wagon, surreys and landaus. In 1926, the late Dazee Bristol designed ďŹ ve oats depicting various aspects of frontier life in early Wyoming. Her designs of dance halls, saloons, and mining camps have highlighted Frontier Days parades for more than 85 years. Other highlights of the parade are equestrian units, historical oats, pre-1964 vehicles, precision drill teams, fancy riders, clowns and much more. The carriages and historical oats provide a avor that enhances the Western atmosphere. Parades last about an hour and a half and are over a mile long, starting at 24th St. and Capitol Ave., winding through downtown, and back up to 24th St. and Carey Ave. Parade announcers are strategically placed at six different stations throughout the route, to bring the parades to life for the thousands of viewers. The Grand Parades are a joy for spectators of all ages and a proud tradition that helps make Cheyenne Frontier Days™ the “Daddy of ‘em Allâ€?ÂŽ.

Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Volunteers Make It Happen

Cheyenne Frontier Days™ (CFD) is put on by a General Committee of eleven volunteers who lead the committees that oversee the specific areas and events of the celebration. The different committees include: Concessions, Contract Acts, Grounds, Indians, Military, Parades, Public Relations, Rodeo, Security, and Tickets. These committees are supported by a corps of more than 2,500 volunteers that work throughout the year to produce the July event. The General Chairman leads the General Committee, helping them keep the big picture in mind and working toward a unified goal. The General Chairman functions as the organization’s Chief Operating Officer. Also working with the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ General Committee to ensure the celebration’s success each year is a 15-person staff lead by the organization’s Chief Executive Officer. With an operating budget over ten million dollars, the volunteers on the committee must be dedicated, able to see the

whole picture, and work with a lot of different personalities. The challenge of keeping Cheyenne Frontier Days™ fresh and on track as a worldwide event can tax a work force made up primarily of volunteers. Why do all these people give so much? Spirit and dedication! Cheyenne Frontier Days™ continues because the people who serve as committee members, volunteers, and assistants all have the spirit to continue this 120-year-old “Legend of the Old West.” For information on becoming a CFD volunteer, pick up an application at Cheyenne Frontier Days™ headquarters or on the website at www.cfdrodeo.com.

In true Cheyenne Frontier Days™ (CFD) fashion, numerous Indian Committee volunteers donate their time to set up for the pancake breakfast which is prepared and served by the Cheyenne Kiwanis Club. The free pancake breakfasts take place Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during Frontier week. Approximately 10,000 people show up for each breakfast. By week’s end, over 30,000 people will have passed through the line to be fed a hearty breakfast of apjacks, ham and coffee or milk. But don’t be discouraged by the numbers; no one waits more than 20 minutes! These volunteers have been cooking for CFD visitors for years, and they’ve got these breakfasts down to a ďŹ ne art! You need a big bowl to mix enough batter for 100,000 pancakes. Rumor has it, Days™ er ti on Fr they use a cee nn esy of Cheye Photo court ment truck! The batter consists of 5,000 pounds of pancake mix. The rest of the menu uses 650 pounds of butter, 450 gallons of syrup, 4,000 pounds of ham, 8,000 pints of milk, 520 gallons of coffee, 125 pounds of sugar, and 12 gallons of cooking oil. Add a healthy dose of blue jean hospitality, and you’ve got a Western apjack chuckwagon breakfast – Cheyenne style! All paid for by Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Inc. and its sponsors. While you’re enjoying breakfast you’ll also enjoy quality country western music, plus the “Little Sun Drum and Dance Group,â€? rodeo royalty, and live entertainment by Cheyenne’s own “Country Club Band.â€? The Frontier Days famous Pancake Breakfast takes place at the Depot Plaza in downtown Cheyenne at the corner of Lincolnway and Capitol Ave., from 7:00am to 9:00am Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Wyoming State Capitol Restoring the People’s House

Designated as a National Historic Landmark, the Wyoming State Capitol is the state’s most significant building and considered an architectural treasure that embodies the true spirit of the Cowboy State. For the next three years, the Capitol will be closed to the public while undergoing its first comprehensive renovation in its 125-year-plus history. The Capitol has served as a place of government from the Wild West territorial days to modern times. The Capitol has been a witness to some of the most significant events in the state’s history, having been the home of the Legislature, the Governor’s Office, the State Supreme Court, statewide elected officials and other agencies. The Ninth Territorial Assembly of Wyoming commissioned the Capitol in anticipation of the impending statehood of Wyoming. The Capitol was planned, designed and constructed in three phases, namely in 1888, 1890 and 1917. The first two phases were completed in time for Wyoming’s admittance to the Union as the 44th state on July 10, 1890. Today this historic building is not large enough to meet the

44

current level of demand for public meeting space and critical infrastructure failures must be addressed to protect the Capitol for future generations. One of the principal drivers of this project is to provide the opportunity for increased public participation in the legislative process. The Capitol currently has significant public space issues, including inadequate committee and meeting rooms. The renovation will add several large meeting rooms in the Capitol, as well as meeting rooms in the Capitol Extension which connects to the Herschler Building. Additionally, the Capitol suffers from dangerous life safety issues, including inadequate smoke and fire detection systems, and non-existent smoke and fire suppression systems. This invasive work has created an opportunity to restore the Capitol. Restoration efforts will include restoring historic ceiling heights, exposing historic decorative elements such as stenciling, cornice molding, and arched doorways, and restoring lay lights and skylights. Additionally, the 1888 Territorial House Chamber, which was later occupied by the Supreme Court in 1890, will be restored. Located in the center of Cheyenne, the Capitol is closed to the public during the restoration, but visitors can view the building along the construction fence line. For a more in-depth look, visitors are encouraged to stop at the Wyoming State Museum or visit www.wyomingcapitolsquare.com. The State Museum offers opportunities to learn more about the state’s history. Hours of service are 9:00am to 4:30pm, Monday through Saturday. Free admission.

Pistol Packin’ Gunslingers Shoot It Up!

Rustlers, lawmen, and other pilgrims are invited to return to those exciting days of yesteryear when villains were hunted down, captured and brought to justice by brave lawmen. Cheyenne visitors get to see how it was done in the “old days.â€? The Cheyenne Gunslingers stage free, actionpacked gunďŹ ghts every day during Cheyenne Frontier Days™ to give onlookers a taste of Old West justice. While some arguments exist about many legends of the Old West, no one argues the fact that the gunďŹ ght is a part of American History. At “High Noonâ€? and 6:00pm Monday through Saturday of Frontier Days™ and on Sunday, only at noon, pistol packing gunslingers perform an hour long show at their new “Home of the Gunslingers,â€? in the heart of Historic Downtown Cheyenne, at 15th Street and Pioneer Avenue. The shows are based on six scripts that recreate an atmosphere of Cheyenne in the 1890’s. Although none of the scripts are based on authentic events, all are written to

provide a maximum amount of action. Each contains a short story, a jail break, and a “hanging. A gun safety demonstration precedes every performance and the entire show is intended as a fun family time! After the smoke clears, visitors may purchase some Gunslinger souvenirs or old fashioned sarsaparilla. Come join the Gunslingers in their new location to celebrate their 33rd Anniversary as the “Goodwill Ambassadors for Cheyenne.

Governor Stanley and First Lady Bobby Hathaway were instrumental in listing this historic home on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. In July 1977, the Historic Governors’ Mansion opened to the public as a historic house museum. In 2004, an extensive restoration was done on the mansion and it now reects the history of home through the various eras throughout. Enjoy self-guided tours enhanced with cell phone audio tours and a mobile website, as well as videos providing information about Wyoming and its ďŹ rst Executive Residence. To schedule a group tour, or for more information, call (307)777-7878 or visit www.artsparkshistory.com. There is no admission charge but donations are accepted. The Historic Governors’ Mansion

The Wyoming Executive Mansion, located on the corner of 21st Street and House Avenue, served as home to 19 of Wyoming’s governors and their families, including the nation’s ďŹ rst female governor, Nellie Tayloe Ross. Stepping onto the political stage in 1925 to win this monumental election, she changed America’s history as well as the history of Wyoming. The mansion has been host to United States presidents, famous authors, and neighborhood children. It is now your turn to be our guest. The stately mansion, designed by Charles Murdock, was modern in 1905 because of its central plumbing, hot water heat, and combination gas and electrical ďŹ xtures. This twoand-a-half story structure’s portico features solid sandstone Corinthian columns that were quarried in four sections, carved on-site and assembled. Construction of the mansion began in the spring of 1904 and was completed that fall. Governor Bryant Brooks and First Lady Mary Naomi Brooks opened the house in January of 1905, beginning a long tradition of entertaining and community service at the mansion by Wyoming’s ďŹ rst families.

Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Transformed from the Early Days to the Present Festivities

It all started in 1897. It seemed the “Magic City of the Plains” that had grown so rapidly needed a boost. The first Cheyenne Frontier Days™ (CFD) committee was formed to develop an event that would attract visitors and attention to Cheyenne. The exact origin of CFD™ is unknown, but a group of businessmen gathered and decided the event would give the city some recognition. They had one month to publicize it. Some critics said it wouldn’t amount to much; they were mistaken. Cheyenne Frontier Days™ has grown from a small event into the world’s largest outdoor rodeo. For Cheyenne, it is the biggest attraction a city could hope to create. Visitors from all over the nation and different parts of the world travel to Wyoming each July to take part in the “Daddy of ‘em All”®. The rodeo has been the main event of Frontier Days. Other activities have come and gone through the years. Baseball

games were popular in the first years. Riding, roping and wrestling bison were also part of the week’s events. Until the mid-1920’s, non-rodeo activities took place in the downtown area. In 1927, the licenses for street-side entertainment were denied. The midway and carnivals began. In 1929, “Frontier Nights®” opened as an evening attraction. Visitors could gamble in false saloons or spend the evening in the dance hall. Beginning in the early 1930’s, an increasing number of celebrities began to attend the festivities. Actors came to have fun and promote their new films. In the 1950’s and 60’s, stars

from television westerns participated in Cheyenne Frontier Days™. Native Americans weren’t a part of the ďŹ rst CFD, but public demand brought them to the second celebration. Shoshones from the Wind River Reservation took part in the early years. By the late 1920’s, Ogalala Lakotas represented the Native Americans. The Southern Plains Indian Dancers participated for the ďŹ rst time in 1980, and they returned each year until 1996. Several different groups have taken part since 1997 including the Wind River Dancers and the “Little Sun Drum and Dance Group.â€? Grand Parades have long been a part of CFD. Early parades featured cowboys and military regiments. Dazee Bristol, a prominent citizen and volunteer, designed oats for the parades and created saloons and a lynching bee. Some of these oats can still be seen in the parades. Through all the changes, the rodeo has been the heart of it all. By the 1920’s, two or three women’s events were included in the rodeo. The economy and World War II changed women’s roles and by 1948, women’s events were no longer part of Frontier Days. In 1973, barrel racing was offered at CFD, but again, the event was dropped after 1981; and brought back as a night show feature in 1991. The rodeos have brought fame and glory as well as tragedy and sadness to Cheyenne. In 1989, bull rider Lane Frost was killed after completing one of his best rides at that year’s “Daddy of ‘em Allâ€?ÂŽ. A statue now stands in tribute to his life and legacy outside the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Old West Museum. Cheyenne Frontier Days™ is a special gathering. It couldn’t happen without the volunteers who donate their time and effort to the event. They do everything from planning the activities to cleaning Frontier Park. Each visitor adds his or her own piece of history to the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ tradition. As the years go by, Frontier Days holds a place in the hearts of all who have had the opportunity to experience it. The past 120 years have seen millions of people travel to Cheyenne to experience this great event. This year, and in the years still to come, more visitors will learn what it means to have been part of the “Daddy of ‘em Allâ€?ÂŽ.

Tucked away in a grove of trees, nearly hidden from the view of modern-day travelers, is a piece of Wyoming history. Little Bear Inn has been a stop for travelers since the 1870’s. Located just minutes north of exit 16 off I-25 on Little Bear Road, it is still a favorite stop for locals and travelers. The Cheyenne Deadwood stage route passed by the inn, and though it was not a scheduled stop, the stage often would use the inn as a rest stop. The post office at Horse Creek closed in 1877, moving to Little Bear and making it a regular stop. The next life of the Little Bear Inn was as a gambling hall, saloon and restaurant. When gambling was outlawed in the 1950’s, it became a restaurant and bar. Little Bear Inn is Cheyenne’s original steakhouse, and has been operating since 1958 at the current location.

Trolley Tour Features Historic Areas

Step aboard the Cheyenne Street Railway trolleys for a fascinating glimpse of the city. There’s no better way to be introduced to the area. The tour focuses on Cheyenne’s unharnessed rough & rowdy beginnings, the first decade when things were quite unruly, and the growing pains throughout Cheyenne’s first quarter century. Your guides will point out the attractions you’ll want to be sure and visit during your stay. The weekday trolley tours allow passengers to get on and off at seven of Cheyenne’s great attractions. You can ride just for the narrated 90-minute tour, or get on and off throughout the day exploring Cheyenne at your leisure. The weekday trolleys begin at Cheyenne Depot Museum, and make stops at the Nelson Museum of the West, The Wyoming State Museum, The Cheyenne Bontanic Gardens, the Cheyenne Frontier Days™ Old West Museum and the Historic Governors’ Mansion. It also takes you by steam engines #1242 Ole Sadie and #4004 Big Boy. The weekend 2-hour tours include one free stop at a local attraction. All tours begin with Cheyenne’s railroad beginnings and then take you through the

era of cattle barons when Cheyenne was the wealthiest cityper-capita in the nation. Expert guides share colorful stories and researched historical information, providing a wonderful overview of the area. The Cheyenne Street Trolley originally started in 1888. The first passengers were Legislative members who rode from the Capitol to the Depot on a horse-drawn trolley. The company closed in 1892, but a second trolley company opened in 1908 and ran sixteen years. They were the newfangled kind of electric car trolleys that ran on a rail. A mere 64 years later, the current Cheyenne Street Railway company originated, and has been going strong for 29 years.

Keeping the Western Spirit Alive

The Cowgirls of the West is dedicated to preserving the heritage and the role women played in the taming and settling of the wild, rough and tumble west. The organization was founded in 1995 by women who not only wanted to keep the Western Spirit alive, but also to honor strong women of the past and present who have made amazing contributions to western culture and history! The settling of the west has been romanticized in books and movies and the lives of women have been shown as easy, glamorous ones. Nothing is farther from the truth—these women worked alongside the men to make our west the one we know today. The purpose of Cowgirls of the West is to tell this story. They do this in a number of ways. Their goal from the beginning was to have a museum to house the many items of Cowgirl history that have been donated and put on loan with them. In 2001, the Cowgirls of the West Museum and Gifts opened in downtown Cheyenne and recently announced the expansion of their Museum and Gift Shop to

the building east of their present facility. Here you will ďŹ nd Cowgirl Memorabilia and Cowgirl volunteers to answer questions and help tell the tale. They also have an interesting collection of western gifts and have monthly luncheons with wonderful, educational western programs. The Cowgirls can also be found at many civic events helping out and wearing their very visible black and red capes! They sponsor a Cowgirls of the West Memorial Scholarship at LCCC. They have also published two cookbooks with interesting stories about many of their members included with their recipes. They participate in the CFD™ parade every year with a oat and lots of cheering Cowgirls in the back of a 1957 red 2-ton atbed truck. Their largest fundraiser is the Cowgirls of the West Annual Brunch and Style Show held the ďŹ rst Monday of Cheyenne Frontier Days™. It is open to the public, as most of their projects are, and entertains nearly 600 guests every July. The Cowgirls of the West also have the “Spring Flingâ€? in April. During Cheyenne Frontier Days™, this is one of the events the museum will be offering: Friday, July 29: Autographs and pictures with International and National Rodeo Queens Some members are ranch women from pioneer families, but most are women and men who love the west and are interested in preserving and learning more about western history. They welcome all to join their membership; annual dues are only $30. Monthly luncheons are held the 2nd Monday of every month (except June, July and August) and are open to the public. “You don’t have to rope and ride— just have the Western Spirit inside!â€? The Cowgirls of the West feel that by their presence, they are making people more aware of the Cowgirl and the woman’s role in the history of the west. The Cowgirls of the West Museum is located at 203 and 205 West 17th Street in downtown Cheyenne. For more information, please call the museum at (307)638-4994 or write to PO Box 525, Cheyenne, WY 82003 or visit our Facebook page.

There are now nearly 30 horse-drawn vehicles on display including Buffalo Bill Cody’s personal carriage and harness. Several are presented in natural settings. They have a collection of ďŹ rearms dating back to the early 1800’s and an impressive 600-piece Indian arrowhead collection. Come see their Old Fashioned kitchen, bedroom, spinning wheel, rope maker and much, much more. Take a stroll down memory lane as you view the historic wagons in a realistic setting as they crossed the United States in the 1800’s and cars dating back to 1906. Their Royal Coach is a must see, as it is similar to the Royal Coach the

Queen of England may have ridden in. Messenger’s Old West Museum is open Monday-Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm and special hours during Cheyenne Frontier Days™.

The Cheyenne Depot and Plaza

Don’t miss visiting the heart of our community since 1886, the Union PaciďŹ c Depot. This National Historic landmark is centrally located in the center of downtown Cheyenne. The Cheyenne Depot and Plaza hosts free events from May through December. The Cheyenne Hispanic Festival, The Cheyenne Celtic Musical Arts Festival, Rhythm by the Rails and Fridays on the Plaza are recognized throughout Wyoming and Colorado. Residents and area visitors visit the downtown Cheyenne area for these cultural and nightlife experiences year after year. Looking for some Wyoming and railroad memorabilia or a souvenir? You will be pleased to ďŹ nd a variety of unique railroad, western and Wyoming related items in our gift shop, where there is a little something for everybody. Designed in Richardsonian Romanesque style and constructed from polychromatic sandstone, the Union PaciďŹ c Depot is widely acknowledged to be one of the most beautiful railroad stations in North America. The Depot is next to the very active main line of Union PaciďŹ c, with over 90 trains passing through each day. The Union PaciďŹ c Steam Shop is home to the famous 844 and 3985 steam locomotives. In

2014, the 4014 Big Boy steam locomotive arrived to start its restoration. The Transcontinental Railroad map embedded in the terrazzo oor of the Cheyenne Depot lobby is just one of the building’s highlights. The original wood benches in the lobby still bear the cigarette burns from soldiers in transport. The “Coupler Buildingâ€? is a gorgeous addition to the Depot. The building serves as a beautiful viewing area of trains passing by and an entrance in the second oor baggage attic where the world famous Union Central and Northern HNo3 Model Railroad reside. Built over 30 years by Harry Brunk, this
