In the merry, merry, month of May people will get out and about again, perhaps meeting up in greater numbers and attending sporting and entertainment events – or will it happen? Regardless of this, at least if the weather is good, a seat in the garden amongst the flowers, singing birds and a Lochaber Life could make a calming break. Find out about the feathered friends revealed in the RSPB survey, the world travels of a Banavie biologist, stimulate the brain with the acrostic writing challenge, discover the Nevis Centre makeover and how Fort William Shinty Club plans to open up the sport to a new generation. Of course, if you have an interesting tale or picture to share, please get in touch. Have fun. Gabh spòrs. Iain

CRUISE LOCH LINNHE ABOVE AND BELOW THE WATERLINE

Iain Ferguson Bring together a long serving, experienced Marine Engineer and a highly regarded local fisherman, who also happened to be Scotland’s youngest ever qualified skipper when he gained his ticket and what do you get – an exciting new business offering cruises witha-difference on Loch Linnhe. Cruise Loch Linnhe, owned and created by Colin Whitehead and Neil Cameron, launches its first service on April 26 (Covid regulations allowing) on their vessel Elsie, designed especially for this purpose and offering more than just a look at the passing scenery. A twin hulled, modern catamaran, with powerful twin engines and a passenger capacity of 65, the service will leave the Town Pier on its daily schedule of trips, firstly taking in the views down the ‘A82’ side of the Loch before turning just before the Corran Narrows and heading up the

COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP AT UPPER ACHINTORE Ken Johnson The residents of Upper Achintore have come together to tackle a growing littering problem in their area. Supported by the Upper Achintore Regeneration Group (UARG), who provide litterpickers and bag hoops, local families and youngsters have been volunteering and have been active in and around the area with particular emphasis on Nairn Crescent, Mull Court and the footpath from Kinross Place through to Zetland Avenue. Mark Linfield, who chairs the UARG, has emphasised the group’s aim of enhancing and upgrading the physical environment of this extensive housing area and added: “We are very pleased that some of our residents are borrowing the Groups litter picking equipment and tidying areas of Upper Achintore. They are making a big difference in the area and people are grateful for their efforts.” Mark’s views are reinforced by UARG committee member

Chris Heardman who looks after the litter-picking equipment. Chris said: “We have litter pickers and bag hoops available for anyone who wants to borrow them to clean up part of our area. Just send me a PM through the group’s Facebook Page and we’ll arrange pick up.” A major black spot for illegal tipping is around the footpath and the burn running down from Kinross Place. In recent weeks, at the instigation of UARG, Highland Council has lifted the two large tyres but

there remains an excessive amount of rubbish including a traffic cone, large plastic items, and two old scooters. Emphasising the need for community action, Chris made a heartfelt plea: “The youngsters have been really good lifting litter and rubbish even though it was all cleared just a couple of weeks ago. They simply cannot understand why people are just dumping rubbish everywhere and they are actually quite upset that all their hard work keeps being undone”. If you and your friends and family would like to help with the UARG clean-up campaign, get in touch via its Facebook page or email uarg19@aol.com

A BRIGHT NEW HOPE SPRINGS EACH YEAR Spring time brought a ‘blooming good show’ of daffodils to the West End of Fort William with the creation of a new Marie Curie Field of Hope at the entrance to the town. The area which once had a raised garden with a Saltire shape had lain fallow for some time, giving the team of local Marie Curie charity volunteers the opportunity to plant it out with daffodil bulbs towards the end fo last year. Their hard work was rewarded with a bloom of welcoming bright yellow flowers highlighting not only remembrance, but also the continuation of good work by the charity in helping people in times of illness. This message is repeated by additional Fields of Hope in Claggan, Caol and other locations across the area. The Lochaber group also carry out various fundraising activities throughout the year.

House Sparrow Most Common Bird in Highland Gardens Iain Ferguson In January a total of 78,066 people across Scotland (including me and I am sure some of you) took part in the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), Big Garden Birdwatch. This was achieved using dedicated paperwork with pictures and names of the birds on which to record the numbers visiting the garden or area in which you would normally watch the birds. Across Scotland 1,527,163 birds were counted and the results broken down into various regions to give an indication of species distribution based on geography. A ‘Top Ten’ of the most numerous was also created.

Now in its 42nd year the event is also a great indicator of how different species are fairing in numbers, either thriving or declining, allowing ‘warning flags’ to be raised on environmental factors may be affecting them.

Highland results:-

14

Anne McCall, director of RSPB Scotland said: “I am absolutely delighted with the number of people who have taken part in this year’s Big Garden Birdwatch, making it the biggest year ever for RSPB Scotland. “Over its four decades, Big Garden Birdwatch has highlighted which species are thriving and which are struggling in the garden bird world. It was first to alert the RSPB to the decline in song thrush numbers, which are still down 78 per cent across the UK compared to the first Big Garden Birdwatch in 1979. “This species was a firm fixture in the top 10 in 1979. By 2009, its numbers were less than half those recorded in 1979, it came in at 20th in the rankings this year, seen in just 13% of Scottish gardens.”

ACTIVE TRAVEL TRAIL TO GLENFINNAN ONE STEP CLOSER The West Highland Community Rail Partnership (WHCRP) and Lochaber Environmental Group (LEG) are delighted to announce that plans for an active travel trail between Fort William and Glenfinnan are looking brighter. Funding for a feasibility study has now been secured from Transport Scotland via Hitrans, the regional transport authority for the Highlands. The vision for the feasibility study is to investigate route options for a high-quality path that runs at a safe distance from the heavy traffic on the A830. The path will link the residential areas between Fort William and Glenfinnan with the railway stations along the route and will hopefully reduce the number of cars travelling to Glenfinnan. The proposed path will complement the ongoing work to improve infrastructure for active travel in Fort William, including LEGs public ebike share scheme and ScotRail’s active travel train carriages soon to be introduced on the West Highland Line. A ‘Road to the Isles’ cycle path extending the National Cycle Network has been discussed for years, so the funding for the Glenfinnan path feasibility study

is an exciting step forward. The proposed path will connect with existing paths in Fort William improving opportunities for everyday commuting by bike and recreational riding. The project group will be working with the feasibility study consultants, community groups, Hitrans, the Highland Council and ScotRail, as well as businesses and residents living along the route, to ensure that the plans take account of all accessibility requirements. If

the active travel trail is deemed to be feasible, the next project stage will be ‘Concept Design’, one of three design stages that need to be completed before the construction stage. The steering group are extremely grateful to Transport Scotland and Hitrans who have made the funding available for this project, with special thanks to Hitrans’ Active Travel Officer Vikki Trelfer whose help and support have been pivotal.

GUILD CONVENER PHOTOGRAPHIC CHALLENGE Mabel Wallace Local woman Mabel Wallace has taken up the office of National Convener of the Church of Scotland for 2020/21 – a challenging year for her, but also time to set a challenge in which all members can take part: The ‘Woman’s Guild’ was founded in 1887 by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland on the initiative of Archibald Hamilton Charteris. Charteris acknowledged women were already involved in Christian service but that there “was a need to develop and organise them as an official working unity within the church”. In 1997, following a major review, the Guild adopted its current constitution. The new constitution changed the name ‘Woman’s Guild’ to ‘Church of Scotland Guild’ – and opened up groups to men as well as women. How can I put into words the absolute privilege it is to be chosen to take up the office of National Convener of the Church of Scotland Guild for 2020/21. Certainly not even a seed when I became a member of Duncansburgh Parish Church Guild way back in the 80’s. I have served with and been blessed to learn from many Guild Folk down the years,

22

I am ever grateful for this which enabled me to assist in 2007 with the Union of Duncansburgh Parish Church and The MacIntosh Memorial Church - Guilds. Having served on the National Leadership Team under three National Conveners I continually give thanks for this

time of sharing, listening and learning and for the ongoing support afforded to me as I have served my first 6 months in Office. We are all living through a year like no other, the usual handover would be after the last National Conveners engagement – [the Big Sing

This was changed in 2020 because of the Covid’19 restrictions to September during the Annual Gathering held each year, in Dundee at the Caird Hall when there would be around 1500/2000 members and guests in attendance. PETER WEST Caring for you and your loved ones. Peter West comes to work every day in the knowledge that he has found his true calling, in caring for deceased loved ones and their families. Having worked closely with people all of his working life, firstly following the family tradition as a highly talented bespoke tailor and for the last 15 years as a Funeral Director, he joined the team at John McLelllan in 2017, setting up home in Ballachulish. Fully qualified as a Mortuary Cosmetologist, in Facial Reconstruction and as a Mortuary Instructor, Peter uses these skills to the utmost in presenting the deceased at everlasting peace as families pay their respects before the final journey. He said: “I pride myself on treating each individual with the greatest of respect and do all I can to bring comfort to those left behind through showing their loved one at peace. Many may have had a difficult path to the end and it can be very

24

comforting for families to see them finally at rest. I pride myself on treating each person with the greatest care and attention to detail”. This view is deeply held by Peter, as when his own parents passed within weeks of each other, his close family persuaded him that he himself should prepare them for burial. Doing this when he was so personally

involved has left him with a feeling of even greater empathy with those who have lost their loved ones, ensuring each individual is cared for to the best of his abilities. He said: “I firmly believe that continuation of care does not end until the deceased is at peace in their final resting place and that is exactly what the team here at John McLellan’s do”.

A SPRING CREATIVE CHALLENGE FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES! With Jo Cowan It’s all felt a bit serious recently! Our latest Highland Senior Citizens Network (HSCN) newsletter included a wee creative writing challenge to folk just to cheer us up and get our brains working again after the winter. Already people are putting pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard, and we’re really impressed by the responses. It occurs to us that this is something which people of any age can take part in – so, people of Lochaber…..Here is THE HSCN WRITING CHALLENGE. We love an acrostic* at HSCN – so we’re throwing down this gauntlet to you: Create a story using all the letters of the alphabet, in order, as the beginning of words to create a “tale for our times”. We’re being kind. Instead of a word beginning with x, at that point you can use any word with x in it! There are only so many xylophones and x-rays we can endure! Well, I’m glad I predicted wrongly for March. We were allowed to celebrate Easter in Church. Hallelujah! Strict Covid rules applied, of course. By the time you read this I hope we might also be able to swim – indoors. You may have read here about those who swim weekly in Loch Linnhe. I learned to swim in the Irish Sea but am ‘soft’ enough now to stick to a tiled pool. It was good for my joints when that was available here, in the all too brief window between summer and autumn

last year. Again, Covid rules applied: Arrival in swimsuit under clothes or bathrobe, and maybe a quick socially distant greeting with staff, or others booked in for limited time slots, and no steam or jacuzzi. In the ‘old’ days, after a swim, I have fond memories of sitting relaxing in that for some good craic. However even in those days there were rules. A poster read “Don’t run!. Don’t jump! Don’t divebomb!” Not that the octogenarians would be doing these anyway. However, putting the world to rights in the Jacuzzi one day, Bill announced: “I dislike that poster. All those Don’ts like the Ten Commandments, and I never liked them.” Bill liked to be controversial!

As he might have anticipated I responded: “Not all begin with don’t “. “Name one!” He shot back. Perhaps I should have remembered the first, fourth, fifth, but what actually came to mind was Jesus’ summary of them.. “Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence… Love others as well as you love yourself. These two commandments are pegs; ... the law hangs from them” [The Message] Matt 22:37 A “humph” and a change of subject followed. Bill would have hated Covid. We all may need to stick to rules for some time. Lord grant us patience with the “do’s and don’ts”, for our own and others’ sake.

NEVIS CENTRE’S LOCKDOWN MAKEOVER Iain Ferguson As lockdown rules are looking more relaxed, many sports and entertainment venues are preparing to reopen for some sort of activity. As the largest venue in Lochaber, the Nevis Centre was forced to cancel multiple bookings and events and despite recent ‘online’ arts activities, unfortunately its doors have remained closed to the public. However, many things have been happening behind those closed doors so that the venue

can quickly bounce back with better facilities than ever before. On a positive note, a lack of visitors presented the opportunity to undertake much needed work on the fabric of the building, such as enhanced fire and safety systems, repairs to the flooring in the main hall and other areas which over time had been damaged by water leaks. …and the really good news is that work has now begun to cure the cause of those leaks, the roof, which over the

30 years since the centre was built, has endured the worst of Lochaber weather. So, when the Nevis Centre finally does open for business, all users, performers and audiences will be able to enjoy some benefits of this lockdown makeover.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFICER FOR FORT’ SHINTY CLUB Iain Ferguson Decades of shinty experience on and off the field have been harnessed by Fort William Shinty Club who can now count on the services of veteran player Willie MacDonald as their first dedicated employee. Recently appointed as club development officer, Willie, a former international team member and currently also Camanachd Association youth director, will be working hard to spread the word

about shinty and create the opportunities for more participation, especially for younger and disabled people. Funding for the post over a three-year period was

supported by SportScotland, matched by the club itself and their sponsors. Already highly regarded in shinty circles for his knowledge, enthusiasm and easy going manner, Willie said: “Firstly, my thanks go to Fort William Shinty Club for this excellent opportunity. I have been involved with youth shinty for many years and it is exciting to formally take on this new role. I can’t wait to get started properly when lockdown allows.”

Simple– Safe – Sorted! Lochaber Chamber offers tourism assistance at the tap of an app Frazer Coupland, Chief Executive Officer Lochaber Chamber of Commerce was one of the first organisations in Scotland to create a bespoke track and trace app to help hospitality businesses easily record the customer details they need by law to keep. FREE AND SECURE WAY TO STORE CUSTOMER CONTACT INFORMATION This easy-to-use mobile web app was provided free to all Lochaber hospitality businesses and will be available for free once again for all businesses to use when hospitality opens up to local guests on April 26. TAKE THE HASSLE OUT OF MANAGING DETAILS It’s simple, paper-free, and easy to use. No more dealing with scraps of paper and forgotten notes of scribbled phone numbers – simply sign up your business, get your unique four-digit venue number, plus your venue QR code and you’re all set! Guests can then either use their smartphone to scan the QR code or log in with your fourdigit venue number at ‘protect.outdoorcapital. co.uk’ when they arrive. If a guest doesn’t have a smartphone, the venue can simply input the details into the app manually. Your guests’ contact information is then securely and confidentially held for the time required by law. Once they have signed up, they can quickly check into other venues that are taking part. Get ready for reopening now – visit protect. outdoorcapital.co.uk and follow the simple steps to sign up and take the hassle out of managing your guest details.

HELP GET BALLACHULISH JUNIOR PARKRUN ‘RUNNING’ Rachel McKerral A group of parents in Ballachulish are working hard to establish a Junior Parkrun for children aged between four and 14 years old, but still need to raise around £1,300 to get things started. Parkrun is a charity which organise weekly timed runs in different parts of the world and an adult 5km is a regular feature in Lochaber. Junior Parkruns which are only 2km long, are a relatively recent creation of the charity and are very under represented in Scotland beyond the central belt. Junior Parkruns happen every week on a Sunday morning following a 2km route and children from age four to 14 can take part, there is no cost to participate and we propose to use Ballachulish Quarry. It is a good location where the children can be constantly monitored, has nearby public toilets, shops and a large car park for those travelling a distance to take part. Parkrun UK requires each new Junior Parkrun to raise £3,000 for their start up costs and essentially the perpetual licence to run. This also covers the physical equipment required such as a timing system, flags, markers, high vis

38

vests, cones and signage, PVG and Disclosure checks for the volunteer race directors, and insurance. Beyond the start up fee, there are no ongoing costs to the running of a Junior Parkrun and are totally free for children to take part in. We are not allowed to fundraise in the traditional way – e.g. sponsored events, crowdfunding, bake sales etc – in order to protect the Parkrun brand. They expect us to involve local businesses in seeking financial support to benefit the community. Our group has been trying to get this off the ground for the last 18 months but Covid has seriously reduced our ability to fundraise as many of the local businesses we have approached or would have approached have been severely affected and are no

longer in a financial position to donate. More than half the money has been raised, with kind donations from Highland Titles, Lochaber Athletic Club, Lochaber Community Fund, and MOWI, but we are obviously keen to secure the remaining funds to get off the ground as soon as we can. The minimum donation Parkrun will accept is £200 and payment can be made via BACs or a cheque once an invoice has been raised by Parkrun UK. As keen runners ourselves and parents of young children, we know the health and social benefits of running, with much research showing that Parkrun and volunteering at Parkruns has a real benefit to participants’ physical and mental health.
