Dear friends! Here is the new book with the unusual name "Lessons for Sustainable Development". This means that with the help of this book you within a year can do something for the sustainable development of mankind. You may not yet know what the word sustainable, or sustainable development means? And why is it important for all of us? What are the steps that can be taken for securing a sustainable development? Try to find the answers to these and other questions. Sustainable development could be called an approach to life, where the public interest is aimed at meeting the needs of not only current residents of planet Earth, but also for future generations. For each earthling sustainable development is the need to use wisely any resources necessary for life, in such numbers that we make sure that the resources we leave are sufficient for today and tomorrow. To take action for sustainable development together with the rest of mankind requires that you: o Acquire knowledge about sustainable development and ways to achieve it, recognize the need for preservation of the global balance and involvement in environmental issues and the fate of mankind, o To support the transition of Ukraine's population to sustainable lifestyles means that you need to be engaged in; o forming models of behavior and actions that meet the needs of sustainable development; o Attitudes to the problems of unbalanced development of civilization as personally important, related to your own life, learn and support others to consciously choose actions and actions for sustainable development. Thus, the objectives of each lesson on the subject are -‐ the formation of new ideas for your sustainable development and, if necessary, changes to your habits and behavior. Achieving all of this is primarily the result of your own activity and your willingness to engage in this work. Lessons for sustainable development are not like every other subject, since the quite a lot of your study time is allocated for practice. The information you receive in the classroom, you do not learn by heart, instead you are supposed to consider and figure out how this knowledge can be used not only in your adult life, but today and tomorrow. This work will be supported by many practical problems, exercises, and time for analysis of your own lifestyle. In the classroom you can get new important experience and interesting thoughts only because there is exchange of ideas. You teach each other, working in teams. This implies the

need for you and your peers to be active and tolerant, because every thought and every idea is valuable in working together. It is a good idea to take notes or create your own portfolio and record everything that you thought important, new or something that needs clarification. Capture your thoughts, suggestions, ideas, comments, additions and questions. When studying this subject – read the manual!

How to work with the Book 1. Guidelines, read them through carefully -‐ in the classroom or at home. 2. The manual provides objectives, projects and exercises for the class. Work on the topics in teams or small groups. This way of work will enable both learning and interesting communication. 3. Under the heading you will find the topic for you to collaborate on. theme is introduced by a text with following instructions of actions.

4. At the end of each lesson we are going to do a short check on what we did. Here you'll find tasks with which you can check your level of achievement during the lesson. 5. Some materials of each topic are homework. Choose and work with the topics you think are really interesting (or those that teacher advise you to look in to as they are important for the next lesson). 6. The material for the first meeting on each topic contains a special problem for the group to work on. Choose one of the tasks, join other students who want to work on this topic and plan the project together. 7. Finally on each topic you will find special questionnaires, task -‐ audits for research of your own lifestyle. We hope that these tasks will give you good ideas and useful insights to your work on the topic. Section I. INTRODUCTION Topic 1. MISSION MEETING I. About the PURPOSE Have you ever thought about how we live our lifes, how the Earth provides different functions that we humans use in our life? When did you think about it? What are your thoughts and ideas?
When going on this mission, we can’t think only of life on Earth, but also the development of other planets – might there be other species out there? This mission is about you having been entrusted to plan the greatest trip ever by humanity and take part in it. You need to design and equip a spaceship -‐ a huge spaceship, able to overcome incredible long distances. Assume that the trip will take 5000 years. The spaceship can take on board not more than 100 people. Since the trip is planned today, when designing it you can use only known technology. There is no need to worry about flying the spaceship and other technical issues of travel – that is a problem for another group of people. Your goal – build a spaceship fit for a miniature world that would contain a balanced ecosystem, and to organize a harmonious life in the spaceship. 1. You can start this task right now with a “brain storm” and express your ideas by answering the question: "What would you take with you on this trip?" Analyze your suggestions and note down why you chose it. What made you choose like you did? Now divide in to small groups and try to answer the questions once more: 1. What do you take with you to ensure that people can live on the spaceship? 2. Who do you invite to travel? Make lists of your choices and submit to the class, giving reasons for each item. 2. Each suggestion expressed by the groups have a right to exist, and you might need an open minded joint decision on the general plan of preparation. Determine how you can produce: a combination of all opinions, the best variant of each option, choosing one option or find you own way? Discuss these options in general terms and make an open-‐minded joint decision. Reflect on whether it was difficult to have an open joint decision, why? Is it important to follow procedures to come to widely accepted solutions on a spaceship? Why? 3. Divide yourselves into groups of 5-‐6 people -‐ "Starship Team" -‐ and start designing your model. Mark on a diagram or drawing in which parts of the spaceship you place different areas, where members live and work during the flight. Your task -‐ to make the spaceship so comfortable, well-‐planned and full of interesting ideas to other people so they want to fly only on it. Focus on the location of all systems in the spaceship. You don’t have to think about weightlessness as a separate complication of your job, an engineering group will solve this.

Discuss in general terms: do you like to work on the preparation of space flight? What issues do you think is necessary in planning the flight? What should be your next steps?
SECOND MEETING. What should I bring with me on the Space trip? 1. Get back in to the groups in which you created the model of the spaceship. Discuss, do you have new ideas? Make the appropriate changes to your model and present them to the class. When planning the flight, you might have wondered over different spheres of existence and human life on Earth, because our planet is like a space ship, flying in the universe. When planning this trip – have you thought of your everyday life? On your needs and requirement of both you and your family and how you meet them? These considerations – incorporate them in to your plans. To direct and help you get going, we offer a special survey, called the audit (inspection). And please remember, it is an audit -‐ not a competition. In this process there is no "right" or "wrong" answers -‐ only fair or invalid. After processing the topics of the course you will return to these issues again. Maybe in your mind and lifestyle something changes during the year. 2. Take the audit individually, making the necessary pencil marks and answer as accurate as possible. Note down "yes" or "no", and where there are numbers, select one of them (1 -‐ never 2 -‐ sometimes 3 -‐ often 4 -‐ almost always, 5 -‐ always). Just do it quick, this is not the time for reflection. If the claim is unclear – ask your teacher. Audit!!!! Discuss the audit results in general terms. What new plan and ideas for your expedition did you encounter? What else do I need to provide? 3. Get back in to your teams and identify the main things you just found out that you might add to your plan for the space flight. You can present your findings to your class and make sure you put it on your list. Also compare your list to the content in the manual. Do they match? Is there anything more you should consider? Are these issues important for the life of the inhabitants of the spaceship? Why? Refine the teams plans!

Present the results of our discussions to the class. 2. Discuss in general terms: What does air mean in human life, and in all life on the planet? What role does it play in a space flight? What are the problems with providing air that can occur during your trip? Make a list of such problems. 3. Based on the text, determine the role of air in the life of mankind. What problems currently exist on Earth-‐related air pollution do you think? Which of them will you have to decide on for your space ship?

AIR -‐ MAIN SOURCE OF LIFE Air -‐ one of nature’s resources that support biological life. It is believed that a person can survive without food for a month, without water -‐ up to 7 days and without air no more than 5 minutes. Air protects our planet from hypothermia and harmful ultraviolet radiation. Without it, the sky would be black as night. During the day there would be an unbearable heat, and it would be terribly cold at night. Air – a natural "buffer" between space and surface of our planet, also carrier of heat and moisture. It is also a vital part of photosynthesis and energy exchange -‐ basic processes of life. Through the air, we hear the music, rustling forest, waves of the sea, see the blue sky, a colorful rainbow and blinking stars. Air -‐ a mixture of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide (CO2) and other substances. It also contains a number of gases. Occasionally your air can contain many impurities, including harmful natural ones like volcanic ashes and artificial pollutants, the latter a result of human activity. In recent years, under the influence of human activities for mining and building, intense air pollution is becoming an issue. The main reason is burning, which are used in technological systems (such as domestic heating, burning of fuel by road, making electricity at thermal power plants, industrial production, etc.). Experts say... o The average per capita livelihood release 1.1 tons of greenhouse gases per year. o Receiving every 15 liters of water from the heater is accompanied by the formation of 1 kg of greenhouse gases. o Over the past 100 years humans has sent in to the air; 1.5 million tons of arsenic, 1 million tons of nickel, 900 tons of carbon dioxide. o The combustion of coal into the atmosphere every year creates about 120 million tons of dust. o One car makes about 10 kg of rubber dust. o One truck emits in air 6 cu. m CO carbon monoxide. Equally important is the pollution of indoor air, including carbon monoxide gases, ash, tar and soot, especially if the building is located near congested road. In the air we breathe every day you find chemicals used in everyday life, especially various aerosols tobacco smoke. The air is also full with waste products from humans and animals -‐ dander, pollen, fungi spores, etc. harmful microorganisms such as dust mites, germs and bacteria, including disease.

According to a well known health authority in the Ukraine, the air inside buildings in 4 -‐ 6 times dirtier and 8 -‐ 10 times more toxic than outside. The composition of air quality in residential and office buildings are often a threat to human health, for each of the harmful particles deposited in our lungs and can cause allergies, respiratory diseases and decreased immunity. Millions of people around the world, realizing the need to preserve the air, trying to change their style of life: give up big cars, preferring economic cars and electric vehicles, transplanted on bikes, do not buy aerosols, create attention in their governments to the problems of industrial pollution. Many of these people can say, as known actress Julia Roberts: "I love this feeling at the end of the day when I know that I took another step closer towards getting me to wake up tomorrow with my children in a clean, healthy and safe world." Tasks for the group projects Joining in small groups, choose one of the research objectives for next week. Discuss the plan for the project. Also discuss how to divide the responsibilities division between yourselves. Decide when and how you prepare the presentation of the results of your research. Now let your creativity free! Group 1 Explore that part of the atmosphere essential for human existence and of living things on Earth. Why do we need to control and protect the atmosphere? Present research results of what you found out and make proposals as to how to use this knowledge during the space trip. Don’t forget to show how you reasoned. Group 2 Explore how mankind is polluting the air. What are the solutions to problems we known in the modern world? Present the results of your research in a range and proposing the possible reduction of air pollution during the space trip. Don’t forget to show how you reasoned. Group 3 What are the main actions of people that are causing the increase of CO2 concentration in the air? How does the raised temperature of the planet affect the climate? Present your research in the form of new and exciting information or proposals for consideration about

the needs of understanding and adjusting the life on board to minimize air pollution during space flight. Group 4 Explore to what extent does the things (and their processes connected with the things) you surround yourself with make an impact on the air quality? Present the results of your research in the form of a list of proposals on ways of maintaining a good air quality in the places where you spend the most of your time. Don’t forget to show how you reasoned. Group 5 Explore why the tree is called an oxygen factory. Determine which function the trees holds in your area? What makes the role of the green plants so important in places where there is dust, gases, soot, and wood? Present the results of the research and list information and proposals for using plants and greenery on the space trip. Don’t forget to show how you reasoned. When working in the project 1. Where can I go to find information? Books, periodicals, professionals, including your teachers can be your source of information. Before the assignment, determine what kind of sources will work for you. One of them, that might be new to you is now more accessible and more popular -‐ the Internet. There are three main ways get the work done with the help of the web. First, you can use search engines: Google, Yahoo, Yandex and others. To do this properly write a request in the form of keywords. (To the theme "Air" you find suggestions of the keywords below.) Second, at Internet you can find subject directories created by qualified professionals. Some even accompanied by explanations of experts from different branches of knowledge to help the user to search information. Among them is the English Directory -‐ About.com (www.about.com), which includes thousands of links with cross-‐references to millions of links; Index (www.ipl.org) -‐ 20,000 directories of Internet resources selected by librarians. Also for Russian speaking users the popular (www.allcat.kiev.ua) is an all in one directory, which contains thousands of links to various subjects (business world, home and family, tourism, etc.), directories (www.catalog.freeservers.com ) -‐ a list of directories on different topics (the state, art, science and education) with millions of links and more.

Thirdly, we can turn to the Internet encyclopedias such as Free Encyclopedia (www.ru.wikipedia.org) -‐ with over 700 thousand references; www.poznaymir.com -‐ a specialized encyclopedia for students and school children and others. 2. What to do with the information we found? Go through the material to review and select information that is directly related to your job and question. You briefly formulate the basic idea, give 1-‐2 examples -‐ illustrate to describe them, and write a brief description. If necessary, keep it short and only list facts in a table or plot. 3. How to submit information? You can present the results of your project as a short message (for 2-‐3 min.) You decide within the group ho should do the presentation. Also prepare illustrations – photos, drawings charts or a computer-‐based presentation as a complement (no more than 5-‐7) to accompany the speech. Discuss in general terms: what during the lesson impressed you? On the questions that interest you, you got answers, and what was not answered? What was your reaction excited, upset? If you are wondering…– what to do next ... Prepare a research project of your group. SECOND MEETING. HOW CAN we act to keep AIR CLEAN? 1. Present the results of the research for project to the class. After each presentation discuss what of your ideas that seem important for planning the trip.
2. For you that have been offered to take part in the space trip it is necessary to prepare for it by taking a look at your own behavior concerning air. This will help you follow these specific steps. Read and discuss in teams about the offered actions. Identify those that appeal to you the most and you choose to do in your daily lives.

Give the car a rest Why act? Did you know that this is a very effective and simple method to improve air quality? Just switch to another kind of energy -‐ your own! This step will help you to become the part of new social movement, what exists today in many countries -‐ from United states to Poland, Sweden and Denmark. Just start walking more often or use a bicycle. When choosing a vehicle for long-‐distance trips the bus is often a better choice than the car, and for local travel, trams, subs and trolley busses are less harmful than diesel buses. How to proceed? § Think about the places that you visit regularly. Note what routes you can walk, rollerblade or cycle to and even ski to in winter. If you replace at least one regular transportation route it means that you instead depend only on your own energy. § Try to replace the habit of "driving” to "thriving" and for moving short distances using public social transportation. § If your local transport is based on electricity (tram, trolley bus, Subway) try to get by with using only them. § Encourage parents to use no car and instead go by public transport at least once a week. If you divide the amount of emissions, for example, a bus for 20 or more passengers, it becomes obvious benefits of such a move for the environment. It also saves money when the car is not used. Facilitate the work of the oxygen factories Why act? Trees are called true oxygen factories. It is estimated that only one tree for 24 hours produces a daily rate of oxygen needed for breathing 3 people. For example, since lilac leaf surface area of 1 square m allocates 1.1 kg of oxygen, aspen -‐ 1 kg, hornbeam, ash -‐ 900 g oak -‐ 850 g pine -‐ 800 g maple -‐ 620 g lime -‐ 470 g for an efficient single tree that grows in favorable conditions can be compared with 10 indoor air conditioners. Creating favorable conditions for trees, we promote effective work for the oxygen factories. How to proceed? § Check near your home or school if there is an area planted with trees, about which nobody cares. § Put on your commercial eye and collect all the garbage and possibly re-‐cycle it, if possible for money.

If there are dead trees that are not taken down, check with the local authorities and see if you can get them or at least permission to take the old ones down and plant new ones. When planting the tree – dig a whole about 60-‐65 cm diameter for the stem. Water the trees and cut dry branches as support for the young tree so that children and adults do not just walk and play at the precise place where you planted the trees. If the summer is dry – water the young trees 1-‐2 times a month. In the autumn you can organize a cleaning of dry leaves for composting. And you might need to put some leaves around the young tree to help it prepare for the winter. You can also trim dry tree branches in the autumn.
We care about green friends Why act? Check out your homes. Don’t you think that useful and beautiful plants that can create a comfortable climate, promote clean air will help you in the fight against disease and harmful radiation could be of good use. The more plants around you, the healthier your life becomes. How to proceed? § Clean the air by plants. A more effective cleaner -‐ Chlorophytum. • Soften the impact of radiation from TV’s and computers – cactus, cypress, arborvitae. • Reduce the number of microbes in the air – geranium, rosemary, aloe. • Neutralize the air of toxins – dyfenbahiya. • They have antifungal properties – laurel, lemon, ficus, ivy. § Check your house where you put a flowerpot. Notice how it is comfortable for plants (the light, or far radiators). § Learn by reading special literature or asking advice from experts about which plants suit your conditions and what care they need. § Select plants that you would like to have at home, buy a pot or something else to plant in (you can use a plastic box). Get ready ground mixture or prepare it yourself by mixing in equal proportions of black soil, peat and sand, and buy seeds or shoots. § Put the plant in the soil and take care of it. § Try once a week to wash the leaves of houseplants or spray them with water. § When needed, plant the plants in new soil and fertilize.

We care about indoor air Why act? People spend more time indoors than outdoors. However, it is proved that the air inside the building dirtier than outside, an average of 2-‐4 times. How to proceed? § When spending time at home, try to open the window every hour for a few minutes. § Never allow smoking indoors, where there are other people. In this case, their health will suffer more damage than those who actually smoke. § During the morning exercises properly ventilate the room for during the intensive exercise we breathe 5 times more air. § Be sure to do wet cleaning, at least once every 2-‐3 days. § Try to clean your room in the morning, and then you breathe clean moist air the whole day. § Ask parents to check and maintain proper operation of kitchen hoods. Clean it at least 2-‐3 times a year, not forgetting to change filters. Reduce the use of household chemicals Why act? Household chemicals, especially in aerosols can be harmful to both air and human health. How to proceed? § Try to convince parents when buying household chemicals to buy liquid or roll on products, avoiding powders and spray. § While cleaning use natural chemicals (you will find recipes in the "Water" theme). § After taking a shower or bath leave the bathroom door left open. During the week you will need to make sure that the proposed actions allow you to take care of the air without lowering the overall quality of life for your family. Make a personal plan of actions for the week, preparing for the tight control of your life during the Stars expeditions. Present your personal plans in the teams.

Using an imaginary microphone, complete the sentence: "For me today was important ...", adding 2-‐3 ideas with lessons learnt that have special meaning to you or your family. If you are wondering…–What to do next ... Choose an action you are interested in, and start to perform. In theory you now know new ways of preserving the purity of the air. THIRD MEETING. How to ensure clean air WHILE TRAVELING in space 1. Discuss in teams: what changes have occurred in your lifestyle and behavior? What are the results obtained during the time that you have been testing your personal plan of action? After completing the task presents group activities. The speaker of each team has to talk about the issues discussed, interesting views expressed during the exercises, and changes in the behavior of the participants. Complete discussion in general terms, on reflection on the responses to the question: do you have new thoughts, ideas during the presentation of the team meetings? Which? 2. Indicators of good health -‐ high-‐performance, creative activity, optimistic, joyful outlook, the harmonious development of the physical and spiritual powers and qualities, interests and needs. So, if you're happy, eat with appetite, sleep tight, then you are healthy. When you are healthy, and when actively working and feeling well under any circumstances, you can successfully solve the problems that you face in life. According to the famous physician, academician M. Amos, "In the majority of diseases we should not blame nature, not society, but the man himself. However sometimes she suffers from laziness and greed, but sometimes of folly. To be ... healthy, there is a need of her own constant significant efforts. Change cannot be nothing. Help the person to be physically healthy and has a society, creating conditions for exercise, healthy eating, prevention and treatment, as well as taking care of environment. Psychological health – a harmony of man both within yourself as well as with the outside world: other people, nature and the cosmos. Psychologically healthy people can govern themselves. Even in the difficult moments of life, it is good to remember that excessive nervousness is injurious to your health. And an irritated person may have a comic appearance, and the excitement does not help to change things for the better. Keeping calm is easier to resolve any issues. Psychologically healthy people know and understand yourself and how good that is, and also your weaknesses. When you are in a good psychological balance you often find you have a natural desire to develop, to reach for something better, to happiness. The path to self-‐knowledge is in each person. You are invited to start the analysis with this assessment of your actions and behavior, observing them. Psychologically healthy people are often seeking personal disclosure. When implementing you -‐ is to make a reality, fully develop all your abilities and opportunities to become a successful person. Realizing the positive traits critical treating your deficiencies, man creates real-‐life plans for improvement. She deliberately answers questions not only "What to do?”, but also "Who to be?" and predicts ways to achieve goals in life. If physical perfection of man has limits, the spiritual – is unlimited. A man's choice is based on her values, as what she believes and sought. If everyday life will be filled, happy and useful – for ourselves, others and society in general -‐ largely depends on the person. Society must promote psychological health to its members, respecting the persons creating the conditions for self-‐development and self-‐realization of their own, supporting talents and abilities, valuing diversity. Social care is another component of well-‐being. It occurs when a person is active and valuable for the other member of family, group, community, and the society in general. Each person takes a certain place that is recognized by others, manifested and they can assert their individuality. The condition of social welfare is a way of regulating social relations, when human rights are recognized, respected in honor and dignity. In socially healthy societies no violence and war is resolving conflicts, there is no reason for it. Today, unfortunately, the world occasionally erupts in ulcerated conflicts. International Court annually examines dozens of cases of human rights violations. Terrorism holds thousands in fear and suspense. The notion of "social welfare" is an incompatible contemporary social phenomenon when poverty, lack of social support, uncertainty about the future exists. Because of the medical progress, humanity can overcome most diseases that undermine physical health and shorten life. But problems in the society harm the psychological health of its members, creating depression, stress and

aggression. Often people themselves do nothing in order to be healthy; most people do not try to get rid of bad habits. The picture would be quite dull if there weren’t many attempts to change this situation. There is a growing movement of supporters of a healthy lifestyle. Very popular is the idea of positive thinking. Some states base their constitution on the principles of human rights and many of them are legislating about protected rights of children and women. There are also programs created and aimed at protecting vulnerable groups: minorities, including ethnic, indigenous peoples, migrants and people affected by conflict and natural disasters. Some companies implement measures to protect the social and psychological health of their employees. There is also learning about leadership skills and conflict mediation. Even the common foods like porridge, soup or eggs can be a source for human health and strength when you follow the principles of good nutrition. And there are a number of requirements that

should be considered by anyone who wants to stay healthy as long as possible. The following tips will help you with this. How to proceed? § Take control when you are really hungry. To do this, ask yourself what you would like out more -‐ or carrot cake? If you choose the carrots – the hunger is of a quite "healthy" sort, if you chose the cake – you probably should wait to eat “real” food that could be ready in 30-‐ 40 minutes. § Eat when you are balanced; avoid eating directly after nerve overstimulation, hard work, strong overcooling or overheating. Just have some water and give yourself a moment. § Take your time when eating. Thoroughly chew each piece until it almost disappears in the mouth. Then the saliva begins the partial cleavage of starch and protein. § Eat after the rhythm in your body and the clock – the body is burning the fuel from the food differently during the 24 hours. As a rule of thumb – the last meal should be no later than 2 hours before bedtime. § Try to eat a varied and preferably simple food. Mashed potatoes, soup, noodles and buckwheat porridge bring much more benefit than the daily delights – they are often more difficult for the stomach. § Beautifully milled food by your own teeth. It is sometimes said that every piece of food should be chewed 32 times -‐ as many times as the teeth in the human mouth. § When cooking, pay attention not only taste qualities of foods, but also what grows outside. You can find real jewelry as dill, parsley, etc. and they are most are welcome. Form a healthy lifestyle Why act? Health -‐ an invaluable asset not only to each person, but also to the whole society. It helps to realize our plans to successfully solve basic life tasks and to overcome difficulties. Unfortunately, many people do not follow simple, scientifically based standards of a healthy lifestyle. Remember that your health is dependent on yourself and your own actions. How to proceed? § Alternate work and rest – good both for your mental and physical health. If you spend much time inside during the day it is really good to spend your free time outdoors for relaxation. Some examples of outdoor vacation for urban dwellers; at work in the garden, go hiking and making excursions at least by walks around the city in parks, stadiums and etc. § Care about yourself and sleep least 8 hours a night. Do not treat sleep as a reserve from which to borrow time for certain matters. § Make time for physical activity, at least for morning exercises. A short daily exercise – a mandatory minimum of physical activity and it can become all the same habit as washing. § Find your way to harden the body. For example, systematic air bath or water treatments.

If you live in the city, use the opportunity of a multistory building: always go down the stairs. If you live on the lower floors, for example on the second, third, or fourth, always use the stairs.
Remembering the simple things that support health Why act? Most of us spend a big part of life indoors, missing out one of the most healing forces of nature -‐ sunlight. Just remember how the sunlight makes your mood rise in the spring, when the days are sunny and warm. Those who spend a lot of time indoors with artificial lighting know that quality of the light is important not only for your vision but also your health. If a person is working for a long time in low light, the eye adapts to it, and it is -‐ one of the reasons for poor vision. To prevent problems choose a light source in the range as close to natural light as possible. Studies have shown that halogen lamp has the right characteristics; a spectrum very similar to the sun. It turns out that buzz -‐ it's also a kind of garbage. Maximum allowable safe level of sound is 80 decibels, which is often the kind of sound level you get from the alarm clock, baby cry and sound of emergency braking. For housing the normal level is about 20-‐30 dB at night and 40 dB during the day. Increased background noise is pollution of the environment and along with other stress factors it can lead to reactions in the nervous system, increasing pressure, increased heart rate, development of chronic fatigue and deafness. According to some estimates, about half of neurosis is a consequence of prolonged noise. According to experimental results, strong electromagnetic fields disrupt certain parameters in the cardiovascular, endocrine and nervous system of humans. These fields are created by trams, trolleybuses and numerous appliances that surround us in everyday life, like mobile phones. They affect the immune system, sexual function, and circulatory system. There are also indications and data about cancer and genetic effects caused by strong electromagnetic fields. How to proceed? § On sunny days, get more of the fresh air and open the windows to let the light fill the room. But always be cautious: limit the stay under the direct sunrays, especially in the midday hours. This will reduce the risk of burns, heat stroke and harmful effects on the skin due to excess of ultraviolet radiation. § When replacing the lamp if possible switch to halogen lamps. § Use lamps upward to reflect light off the walls and ceiling for increased illumination. § Make Sunday picnics in good company (eg, classmates) to break from the hustle and enjoy the silence and the sounds of nature. § Follow the sound level when using video and audio at home. § Sit no closer than 1-‐1.5 m from the TV. § Get outlets that "sparks" repaired. § Do not place the bed near the outlet. § Use safety goggles when working with your computer.

Take a walk or ride a bike for short trips, only use electric transportation (train, trolleybuses) when moving long distances. Spend less time talking on a cell phone close to your head and try a headset instead. Keep your cell phone in your bag or briefcase, away from the body.
Respect those who are close to us Why act? We live in a society and are constantly interacting with other people -‐ at home and at work, transport and store, in class, and finally in the family. Following the golden rule -‐ do not do to others what you do not want yourself -‐ you will save yourself from many problems. How to proceed? § Create goodwill based on your relationships with other people. § Practice to give more than take in your relationships. § Rejoice in all manifestations of life. Self-‐improvement -‐ your inner choice. In this work – don’t rush because largely success depends on you; so don’t put to much pressure on yourself at once. Analyze yourself Why act? The sign of psychological health is how the person knows and understands herself. Absolutely normal is the desire to change, to reach for something better. A development begins with self-‐ knowledge, awareness of what / who I am now. You can learn by watching yourself, analyzing your actions and behavior and evaluating them. How to proceed? ü Take a sheet of paper. Divide it in half. ü In one column, write down the traits, abilities, and skills that you think your forte. In the second -‐ the qualities that you are not satisfied with and want to change. ü Think about what you would like to change in the first place and how you can begin to act in this direction. Starting work with clearly imaging what should be the end result of your changes. ü Make a step-‐by-‐step plan for making changes, defining specific times. Try to follow this plan, tracking every stage of its progression.

Looking for treasure in every person Why act? Research shows that many people suffer from a perception that they are not appreciated, that other think badly of them and only criticize. However, everyone is pleased when friends and acquaintances recognize their positive traits, qualities and talents. Often while communicating with people is quite easy to find what is worth capturing so this is one way of looking for treasures in every person. And you probably think it is much more pleasant to be among people you value. How to proceed? When communicating with someone, try to find at least two or three positive traits or skills (which perhaps you would like to develop in yourself). Try to evaluate the person objectively, even if your relationship or overall impression of her is negative. At the following meeting with the person, remember the positive things that you saw in her. When possible tell her about it, and your relationship definitely will improve. We plan our lives Why act? "To the ship that does not know where to sail, no wind will be fair" -‐ once said by the philosopher Seneca. Everyone has to choose for you a particular action and eventually -‐ life. Before you start to do something, you need to determine your intentions, goal and choose behavior. But the main thing is to act as intended and planned. How to proceed? § Take a sheet of paper. Divide it into two columns. § Write down in the first column what you are doing during the week, and in the second column -‐ what you want to achieve in life. § Compare two columns and determine which of your everyday actions "works" to achieve life plans, and how much time is spent in vain. § Try to outline specific plans for the near future that really bring you closer to important life goals. § Now plan the steps for their implementation. Begin to act with the knowledge that you are working on an important goal. Determine a vital strategy Why act? Watching people it is easily noticed that some always achieve their goals, confidently moving forward, day after day and year after year, changing themselves and their lives for the better. Even temporary setbacks do not stop their movement and deprive them of confidence. Others -‐ always doubt in their own ability and complain about the circumstances and environment, the lack of ability.

To learn how to confidently go forward, it is important to imagine your life goals and plan activities to achieve them considering both external factors and capabilities. At this time the person is not capable of constructive behavior, cooperation, adequate perception of the world. And the best way out of this situation is the support from another person. Even in situations that you can feel as failure for yourself, you can probably say: "I'm satisfied to 1%." Every step, every achievement, even if it is very small at first glance is development, and hence there is reason to be proud of yourself.
Arrange holidays Why act? Our life often resembles a carousel, hurtling around in circles. Days can be very monotonous, and people tend to get tired of the repeatability in actions and situations. FIRST MEETING. WHY A SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY NEEDS CULTURAL RELATIONS 1. Present the results of the home audit in the teams, answering and discussing the question: What thoughts did this kind of research rise? Cherished values: common morality, respect for human rights, respect for cultural traditions, tolerance, i.e. tolerance to other opinions, views, etc… Tolerance -‐ an essential condition for peace and harmony in the family, team and society, because social relationships are constantly changing, creating a harmony, a unilateral advantage, and even direct clash of interests. Different people – means different views on life, work, love and so on. Do we always respect the opinions and views of others, their feelings, rights and needs? Should we seek another person mirror your views? Is it a good idea even if their view is the opposite of mine? Must we show hardness or be a conformists? At the beginning of the 21th century, mankind begins to understand that the Earth is not so large, all people -‐ neighbors and the planet -‐ our home, should be protected. In order to do guard our planet we need to combine efforts to find common ground on how to do it. In the endless sea of cultures the ideas for modern human tolerance has become a kind of lifeline

that enables us to live in harmony with others. Today each indicator of a democratic state is measured by the level of tolerance -‐ religious, ethnic, ideological, etc… For each individual tolerance as a trait of character is the key to a successful life, because it helps in avoid conflicts and in building friendly relations with different people. Take a look at conflicts you have been involved in and ponder: How would events have evolved, if you showed more tolerance? Chances are, you might find that you wouldn’t have had to engage in a real conflict. However, is it really possible to live without any confrontation? Because people are different it can be very difficult to consider everybody’s interests and differences. Indeed, conflict is always a manifestation of contradictions, a disagreement between two or more people or ideas. However, it does not necessarily have to lead to quarrels. You can always (even in situations of acute conflict) remain in a position of interaction, dialogue. We can learn to resolve conflicts in the interests of both parties by mutual tolerance for consensus or compromise. Recognizing that every person has absolutely the same rights as you, should be as natural as breathing for a modern culture. United Nations General Assembly in 1948 proclaimed inalienability and inviolability of basic human rights. The Constitution of Ukraine holds a formulation about our duties as citizens: "Do not encroach upon the rights and freedoms, honor and dignity of other people." Unfortunately, the facts of violation of human rights continue to be the focus of the courts, the media and the international community. The endeavor to protect human rights as the highest social value is still important in the democratic state and the entire world community. In addition, a world that is rapidly changing requires new modern human qualities. Teamwork, communication skills, the ability to take responsibility for the outcome of the work and a commanding presence -‐ that is what most employers want today, and it is no coincident. Information technologies are changing our world. Routine work is increasingly translated into microprocessors. We are left with no choice but to become stronger, more responsible, constantly learn, to change, to improvise, to take your destiny into your own hands – and that is to be leaders. T. Peters described the leadership: "It's like love ... Thirst. Enthusiasm. Appetite for life. Involvement. Striving for perfection. Great ideals and great achievements. Insatiable thirst for change. " This is a choice that people have to make for themselves and feel for.

Imagine that during the travel, it is decided by the space captain that a Museum of Human Rights should be established in order to explain and remind everyone that the duty of every member of the team is to – respect and honor the other members of the flight, their rights and freedoms. Working in your teams, create (draw, describe, or choose from materials available to you) two or three exhibits for the museum. Remember that what you choose to display can be anything from the everyday life in the community and related to questions of your freedom and safety. Prepare a presentation of the exhibits. 3. Which society can be called a learning society The level of education of a person as well as the society in which she lives, provides an opportunity to build a career, earn money, to realize yourself in the beloved. The need for survival is often associated with the need to acquire new knowledge, learn something. For continuous professional development people could watch the news in a chosen profession just to be competent and competitive. And sometimes learn new skills, because previous ones become old and not so suitable any more. How to proceed? • Ask questions whenever possible, make them short and clear. Long, complex, vague questions tend to complicate the understanding and the search for answers. • Formulate questions. To check its correctness should find out the truth of the content. For example, the question "How high do crocodiles fly?" means that there are crocodiles and they can fly. The last statement is false, so the question is incorrect. • If the question is complex and difficult, it is better to break it down in a few simple. • In difficult questions you need to specify all the possible alternatives. How to proceed? • When looking at a site, see if you can separate facts from interpretations, look for the actual events and separate it from the assumptions and conclusions. • Find an article that presents different perspectives, and compare them. • Identify the author of the site and date of posting. • Look to see if you can identify what purpose the authors behind the Web page wants to display • Check whose materials are put up on the site – is it only the authors’ materials or are there materials also by others? Are they citing their sources in a correct way? • Check whether the texts are bias: one-‐sided information. Look if you can spot an underlying meaning – evaluating words can be a give away. Do you get a feeling that all information is there or is something deliberately concealed? Whose interests are presented on the site? Whose ideas and needs are left unattended? Use the TV as a source of information Why act? Television has the largest audience of all media, its importance in people's daily life cannot be overemphasized. TV informs, teaches, advises, entertains, engages in the discussion, influences, forms, offers its own special "product" -‐ teleinformation. Its contents are very varied: entertainment and information, cultural and sports programs, movies and talk shows. If the viewer needs certain information, most likely it will be able to find it on television. TV has a significant impact on the minds of viewers and has various opportunities to manipulate it. How to proceed? • Be aware of that the idea of life, which you see at the screen, and life itself – sometimes are completely different things. • Check the information obtained from TV programs, use other sources. • Constantly remember that television -‐ the tens or hundreds of people (not so many work there actually) who are sometimes trying to influence the public opinion.
