PRESIDENTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S MESSAGE Summer 2011 Dear Xavier Alumni & Friends: I recently had the pleasure of presiding over the 84th annual commencement exercises for the University. I am always excited and encouraged during this time of year due in large part to the anticipation and hope of our graduating seniors as they embark on their new careers. Their positive attitudes and sense of accomplishment are promising, contagious, and uplifting. In addition to the achievements of our graduates, this issue of Xavier Gold provides you with a representative sample of the exciting events and occurrences that continue to take place on the campus. Our cover story revisits the historic campus visit of President Barack Obama in commemoration of the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. This first-ever visit to the Xavier campus by a sitting U. S. president generated a level of excitement and pride not previously experienced in our eighty-six year history. It is hard to put in words the feelings and emotions experienced by not only those in attendance, but for the thousands of proud Xavierites across our great nation. The physical state of the campus continues to evolve with the wide array of construction projects taking place to include the recently dedicated Qatar Pharmacy Pavilion, the much anticipated St. Katharine Drexel Chapel, and our new state-of-the art Convocation Assembly Center which has just begun to be built. Whether you are local or out-of-town, please make plans to stop by the campus whenever you are in the area. You will be amazed and impressed with our growth. Our commitment to excellence during the past year also saw Xavier receive full accreditation from an array of agencies to include the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools (SACS), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Finally, highlighted in this issue is our annual tribute to those alumni and friends who made a financial contribution to the University during calendar year 2010. The continued generosity of each and every donor is a vital component of our mission to educate deserving students and we remain eternally grateful for their unwavering support. Qatar Pavilion An October 2010 ribbon-cutting ceremony officially marked the opening of the University’s new Qatar Pharmacy Pavilion expansion. Qatar Minister of Education H.E. Saad Bin Ibrahim al-Mahmoud, whose Middle Eastern nation donated $12.5 million toward construction of the expansion, was among the honored guests at the well-attended event. All of the College’s new high-tech Pharmacy teaching labs, as well as two large auditoriumstyle lecture halls (each capable of seating as many as 200 students) are housed in the five-story, 60,000-square foot addition, as well as teaching and research laboratories, a mock pharmacy skills laboratory and a Drug Information Center. The expansion allows the University to sustain its increased enrollment growth over the past decade while drastically improving the overall quality of its academic programs and research endeavors.

Sacs Reaffirmation, Accreditations The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) reaffirmed Xavier’s regional accreditation for another 10 years in December 2010. The University was found to be fully compliant with all 86 SACS standards and requirements, including its new campuswide Quality Enhancement Plan “Read Today, Lead Tomorrow” initiative designed to encourage all members of the Xavier community to become more active and engaged readers. This announcement follows an exhaustive two-year self-study and an external review by an independent site visit team. Earlier in the year Xavier received reaffirmations of its accreditations from both the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Post-Katrina High Enrollment Post-Hurricane Katrina enrollment hit a new high again in the fall, thanks to a solid freshman class that exceeded projected levels and a welcome influx of new transfer students. 781 new freshmen and 151 new transfers pushed the university’s overall enrollment to 3,394 students, two percent higher than last fall’s figures. Enrollment has grown slowly but steadily in the five years since Katrina had knocked down the student population to around three-quarters of its best pre-storm figures.

St. Katharine Drexel Chapel Construction continues on the world-class chapel in honor of the university’s founder Saint Katharine Drexel. When completed in early 2012, the octagon-shaped, energy-efficient spiritual center will accommodate more than 400 visitors and house 11,000 square feet of space to include a sanctuary, sacristy, and garden, day chapel and bell tower. Designed by world-renowned architect César Pelli, the Chapel will feature a limestone exterior, a domed copper roof and a large cross at its apex.

Convocation Academic Center Work has begun on the university’s newest construction project – a Convocation Academic Center – which will be located across Washington Avenue from the main campus. The much anticipated addition to the campus skyline will provide XU with its first spacious indoor assembly area: a modern 4,500 seat arena suitable for athletic and other large-scale events. The new facility will replace the “The Barn”, which heretofore has traditionally hosted all indoor athletic events and most other special ceremonies. The anticipated completion date is late summer 2012.

LEAD SPONSOR: AT&T Louisiana President Sonia Perez shares a moment backstage with XU President Dr. Norman C. Francis and entertainer Bill Cosby Jr. at the university’s 3rd annual Dr. Norman C. Francis Endowed Scholarship Benefit Concert. AT&T was the lead sponsor of this year’s event, while Cosby was a headliner along with the Men of Soul.

The Third Annual Dr. Norman C. Francis Endowed Scholarship Benefit Concert was held Nov. 19 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center Theater. The evening began with a patron party for sponsors and major corporate donors. Featured performers included Bill Cosby, Jeffrey Osborne, Peabo Bryson, Howard Hewett, and Freddie Jackson. AT&T-Louisiana served as the presenting sponsor. Total net profit exceeded $125,000. To date, $600,000 has been contributed as a result of these benefit concerts to the endowed scholarship fund that was created in 2008 in recognition of the 40th presidential anniversary of Dr. Francis. The goal for the scholarship fund is the creation of a $1 million endowment.

Center For Cancer Research The College of Pharmacy, in collaboration with the College of Arts & Sciences, received a five-year, $10-million award from NIH/National Center for Research Resources to help establish a Center for Cancer Research. This project provides funds to increase the number and quality of cancer researchers, to support selected pilot projects to assist junior investigators in becoming fully competitive in cancer research, to provide seed funding for developmental projects, and to develop three core laboratories to support cancer research activities in the university.

Xavier Named to Hhmi Science Education Alliance Xavier is one of twelve schools and the only HBCU to be named a 2011 member of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s (HHMI) Science Education Alliance. Xavier and the other schools will begin offering an innovative course from HHMI’s Science Education Alliance (SEA) that will give students hands on research experience in an elective course. HHMI provides training, research, and laboratory materials, as well as support from HHMI staff.

New Deans for Arts and Sciences

Cur re nt Eve nt s, N ews a n d O th er Ha p p enings at Xavier Dr. Anil Kukreja, chair of the Division of Business since 2003 and the Capital One Endowed Professor in Finance and Management, has been named the new Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. In addition, Dr. Kim Vaz, an associate professor at the University of South Florida, and founder of the Florida Consortium for Women’s and Gender Studies, has been named the new Associate Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences at Xavier.

Academic Success Noted Diverse Issues in Higher Education magazine’s annual “Top 100 Undergraduate Degree Producers” issue (June 2010) showed XU once again ranking first in the nation in the number of African American students earning baccalaureate degrees in two areas – the biological and biomedical sciences, as well as the physical sciences.

NIH Research Funding The XU College of Pharmacy ranks among the nation’s top 20 when it comes to research funding by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), according to the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy 2010 report on such funding. The new ranking reflects a substantial jump from Xavier’s previous ranking of No. 58 out of 109 total schools included in the annual NIH rankings.

Center For Undergraduate Research The Center for Undergraduate Research (CUR) at Xavier awarded nearly $220,000 in support of faculty-student research this year. Many of those research projects were on public display during the bi-annual, two-day Festival of Scholars events. In addition, Xavier’s online journal (XULAneXUS) published by and for Xavier students published two issues this year.

NSF Stem Grant The Department of Physics and Dual-Degree Engineering and the Division of Education has been awarded nearly $1.75 million to continue developing retention and graduation programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines and STEM education. The fiveyear federal grant from the National Science Foundation represents a commitment from the federal government to graduate a more diverse student body in the sciences and in science education.

gram The United Negro College Fund awarded the university a $92,000 grant to fund the Xavier/UNCF Social Entrepreneurship Fellow program, which advocates the employment of business principles to address social missions or problems. Student participants receive assistance and training in leadership and business skills, participate in an eight-week summer internship, and are eligible for a two-year, $10,000 grant if they commit to working in some type of social entrepreneurship organization or business.

St. Katharine Named To National Women’s Hall Of Fame The National Women’s Hall of Fame has announced the induction of Xavier founder St. Katharine Drexel. She is one of 11 American women “who have made valuable and enduring contributions to our nation” who will be recognized in ceremonies to be held Sept. 30-Oct. 1 in Seneca Falls NY, the birthplace of the American Women’s Rights Movement.

Freshmen Experience Lagniappe In the vernacular of New Orleans, the term “lagniappe” connotes “something extra” that you get when you purchase an item or services. That’s the idea behind the Lagniappe New Student Summer Preview weekend for new incoming freshmen. Now in its the third year, the initiative underscores the university’s commitment to easing the transition of high school graduates into a university environment and to better prepare them for academics at the college level. Regional students (e.g. those from Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Texas, and Tennessee) are required to attend the program. Students from further away are also encouraged to participate.

Close to 350 students and their families attended the orientation preview, an invitational two-day event designed to ease the transition of new students into the college environment.

The university’s early intervention BOOST program (Building Optimal Outcomes and Success Training) has proved successful in the retention of first-time freshmen who were required to enroll in at least one developmental or intensive course. Freshman Seminar instructors served as mentors for the students, who were required to attend tutoring for specified courses and meet with their mentors at least twice a month.

NSF Research Grant Louisiana scientists and students from Xavier and six other state universities will share in $23 million in grants awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The package includes a five-year, $20 million award that is the biggest grant that the foundation has given to Louisiana. That grant will establish a network of scientists from Xavier, LSU, Tulane University, the University of New Orleans, Grambling State University, Louisiana Tech University and Southern University- Baton Rouge.

What They’ll Be Reading Next Fall The students, faculty, and staff of Xavier have selected Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal as next year’s shared reading. In the book, journalist Eric Schlosser chronicles the evolution of the fast food industry and documents some ugly truths about this hallmark of American culture. The book will be required reading by all first-year students at Xavier, but it is a text that anyone on campus can and should read, as it is selected because it addresses issues relevant to Xavier’s mission.

Annual Who’s Who List 150 student scholars were selected for the 2011 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, an annual chronicle of the nation’s outstanding campus leaders. The students – chosen by XU department chairs and faculty and approved by the editors of the directory – were selected based on their academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success.

Pharmacy Skills Competition Two pharmacy students – Christopher Gillard and Ifeanyi Onor – were among the top 10 finalists at the 15th annual American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists (ASHS) National Clinical Skills Competition. A record 109 teams participated in the event, during which students demonstrated their skills by assessing patient information and current therapy, identifying and prioritizing drug therapy problems, identifying treatment goals, and recommending a pharmacist’s care plan.

Outstanding Faculty Recognized Six faculty members were presented Norman C. Francis Faculty Excellence Awards for their extraordinary performance in the areas of teaching, service and scholarship. The 2011 winners were: Teaching - Dr. Keturah Robinson (pharmacy) and Dr. Murty Akundi (physics/engineering); Service – Dr. Anderson Sunda-Meya (physics/engineering) and Clifford Wright (business); and Scholarship – Dr. Partha Bhattacharjee (biology) and Dr. Michael Homan (theology).

University Honors 66 Long-Time Faculty And Staff Sixty-six long-time faculty and staff members were honored as part of the University’s annual Founder’s Day celebration. Topping the list of honorees celebrating anniversaries of their employment at XU were Dr. JW Carmichael (premed/chemistry), Dr. Joe Melcher (speech pathology) and Clifford Wright (business), all with 40 years of service.

XU Music Professor’s Opera Earns Big Easy Award “Embarrassing Position,” an original opera written by XU music professor and composer Dr. Dan Shore, was recognized with the Big Easy Entertainment Award’s 2011 Creative Achievement in Opera award. The opera had its premiere at the New England Conservatory in Boston MA in May 2010, while the XU Opera Workshop performed the opera locally in the fall.

Basketball Teams Shine A loss in the opening round of the opening round of the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament in Kansas City MO ended what otherwise was one of the best seasons in Gold Rush history. The men finished with a 27-6 record, their best record since 1983-84. The women posted an equally fine season, which included a 27-7 record, and winning both the GCAC regular season and tournament titles. The Gold Nuggets advanced as far as the second round of the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament.

Men’s Tennis Repeats The Xavier men’s tennis team garnered the program’s first Top 10 national ranking in 2011, posting a 13-9 overall record and qualifying for their third consecutive berth in the NAIA National Championship Tournament. Head Coach Alan Green was named Coach of the Year on the All-Louisiana men’s tennis team selected by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Former XU coach Ralph Metcalfe and the Xavier relay team he assembled which made history at the 1942 Penn Relays were both honored at the recent 116th running of the United States’ oldest annual track and field event. Herb Douglas, the only surviving member of the 1942 Xavier relay team (the first HBCU school to win a race at the Penn Relays) and XU President Dr. Norman Francis were among those attending the event.

Cross Country Xavier’s men and women each won their fifth straight Gulf Coast Athletic Conference team championships at the 2010 NAIA Championships qualifying meet / GCAC Championships. The Rush’s Matt Pieri also won the GCAC individual title.

XU Student Named Kemper Scholar

Freshman Adia Wallace, a philosophy major from Jackson MS, was named to the Kemper Scholars Program’s Class of 2013. Designed to prepare students for leadership and service, the prestigious program promotes education in the liberal arts while providing opportunities for career exploration and practical experience through internships. Kemper Scholars receive annual scholarships of up to $10,000 a year (based on need) as well as paid internships at major non-profit organizations in the Chicago IL area.

XU Student Named Albert Schweitzer Fellow Derrick Bradley, a second-year pharmacy student from Ringhold LA (Ringhold High School), was awarded an Albert Schweitzer Fellowship. One of 260 national selections to the program’s Class of 2011-12, he will work through the Daughters of Charity to deliver programming that improves health competency, comprehension, and literacy in minority communities in New Orleans. Upon completion of his initial year in the program, Bradley will become a Schweitzer Fellow for Life – joining a vibrant network of over 2,000 individuals who are skilled in, and committed to, addressing the health needs of underserved people throughout their careers as professionals.

Student Service Center The old St. Joseph’s Residence Hall – unused since Hurricane Katrina – is currently being transformed into a new energy efficient Student Service Center. When completed, the three-story building will house the Student Health Center, the Counseling Center, as well as the reading and writing labs and various other student-oriented offices. XG

Louisiana coast on August 29, 2005, the residents of New Orleans and the Xavier community had slightly less than two days to prepare for what

would become the greatest catastrophic event in our lifetime. Exactly five years later, when President Barack Obama was searching for a location to deliver his historic speech marking the 5th anniversary of the devastating storm, the Xavier community had slightly less than seven days warning to prepare for this by Kenneth St. Charles, Ph.D. Vice President for Institutional Advancement

Obama on Campus on Monday, August 23rd and that we should have a good weekend because the following week would be very, very busy. These were truly prophetic words because the planning and excitement associated with a presidential visit can be overwhelming to say the least.

The anticipation was high as the audience crowded into the University Center.

he first indication that a presidential visit was being considered came on the morning of Friday, August 20th when University president Dr. Norman C. Francis received a phone call from the White House with a simple request: would Xavier University be interested in serving as the host institution for the president’s visit and speech? Dr. Francis and Xavier were certainly no strangers when it came to welcoming world leaders, having hosted such dignitaries as Pope John Paul II (1987), the Amir of the middle eastern nation of Qatar (2007), and an array of A-list entertainers and world leaders to include Colin Powell, Bill Cosby, Lionel Hampton, and former president Bill Clinton. Ironically, before being elected as the 44th U. S. president, then Senator and presidential candidate Barack Obama explored a visit to the Xavier campus to deliver a campaign speech. After a scouting visit to the campus during the 2008 Mardi Gras holidays, the Obama camp ultimately decided that the university did not have the physical space to accommodate the large crowds that the Obama campaign was drawing for similar campaign speeches.

On Monday afternoon, a group of eleven officials from the White House, made up primarily of public affairs and media specialists, event planners, and of course secret service agents, met in the president’s dining room for preliminary discussions and introductions with Dr. Francis and senior Xavier officials. The visitors stated that the President was excited to be coming to Xavier and that they first would need to conduct an initial site visit of the entire campus before a final venue could be selected. We were told that all sites on the campus, both interior and exterior sites, were up for consideration. Once the team had conducted their initial tour, a status report would be sent back to Washington for a final decision. The site visit began at the historic Xavier gymnasium; known affectionately to Xavierites as the Barn, which most believed would be the chosen site for the president’s speech. It had the greatest seating capacity; it had great access and exit points, and ample parking. However, we later learned that it was eventually disqualified due primarily to its location in relation to the interstate highway that runs directly behind it. Had the Barn been selected, we were told that traffic into and out of the city on the busy interstate highway would have to be halted throughout President Obama’s speech. The group next visited the outdoor quadrangle directly behind the Administration Building, which was the site of the 1987 visit by Pope John Paul II. Many security-related factors doomed this site as a possible location, not the least of which was the problems associated with staging an outdoor event in New Orleans in late August with the heat, humidity and torrential rain threats.

As luck would have it, the University was now being offered a second chance to host a speech by Barack Obama, not as candidate Obama but as President Obama, and Norman Francis was fully committed to making sure that Xavier would pull out all stops to make this visit work.

We looked at classrooms, at the new Qatar Pharmacy Pavilion, and even an old warehouse that was acquired by Xavier across the canal on Washington Avenue. However, the final site to be visited was the William and Mary McCaffrey Ballroom that is on the 3rd floor of the University Center. Every inch of the University Center and ballroom was inspected, to include elevators, closets, restrooms, the cafeteria, and all adjoining offices and service entrances.

the event would be a standing-room only event. Chairs would be limited to the elderly and disabled. Both of these developments were disappointing for the University, especially given the fact that we wanted to include as many of our current students as possible. Nevertheless, the University agreed with all of these decisions because we fully understood that the safety of the president was the reason these requests were necessary.

Reminder from the White House: Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re Calling the Shots

Move in, Set-up, and Ticket Distribution

As the final site for the speech was been vetted back in Washington, the White House correctly predicted that the University would begin to receive requests from a wide range of ticket seekers, to include politicians, alumni, students, faculty, staff, media, and of course the general public. Xavier was told in very clear and direct terms that this speech was a White House event, not a Xavier event and even though Xavier was being asked to host the president of the United States, our hosting was similar to a bridal party seeking to reserve the Xavier ballroom for a wedding reception. Our only role was to provide the actual room. The White House would be responsible for everything else to include furnishings, fixtures, decorations, printing, room layout, and of course ticket distribution. While Xavier was initially promised 350 to 400 tickets, this number eventually was lowered to a surprising 170 tickets. Additionally, the White House informed the University that all guests that were to be invited should be advised that

The actual move-in and set-up was similar to a military-style operation. Equipment, staging, full-body airport-style metal detectors, flags, and of course the famous official podium with the presidential seal began arriving at the University on the morning of Friday, August 27th. It was only at this time that the University began to be told the actual flow of the event. Phone calls to prospective guests also began to be made beginning Friday morning. Additionally, the White House established an online ticket distribution system that allowed anyone from the general public interested in attending to be considered in a lottery-style system. The Xavier allotment of 170 tickets, which ironically were not ready for pick-up from the Intercontinental Hotel until 11pm Friday night immediately following the New Orleans Saints pre-season football game, were totally committed-for in less than 90 minutes. Actual ticket distribution for both the Xavier group as well as the general public took place on Saturday morning, with each and every guest in the Xavier party being required to undergo a special background screening. learned that this screening was necessary because the Xavier group would be allowed to enter a special zone closest to President Obama. Even though Xavier had a tremendously difficult time deciding who to invite, Dr. Francis insisted that neighbors in the Xavier community be included, especially the elderly. Dr. Francis also insisted that the presidents of the local colleges and religious orders be invited. Xavier was also asked to recommend several key participants for the historic visit. Key roles included someone to introduce the President, another to recite the pledge of allegiance, someone to offer the invocation, a student to sing the national anthem, and finally a representative to greet the President upon his arrival on the campus. Additionally, thirty-five students were requested to be seated on the stage directly behind the president. I remember visiting the campus Saturday night at approximately 10pm, exhausted after spending all day distributing the tickets, briefing Dr. Francis, and making final preparations. I went to see the actual ballroom where the speech was taking place and was amazed to find no one in the room. I was also surprised as to how calm everything seemed given that the world’s most powerful man would be in this room in less than 24 hours.

Oh What a Day – the Historic Visit of President and Mrs. Obama When Sunday morning arrived, everything was in place and ready to go. The New Orleans Police Department arrived at 5am to erect more than one hundred and fifty barricades that ringed the entire University center in anticipation of the protestors and dissenters who routinely follow the president. The barricades also provided an extra level of security to ensure that only authorized ticket-holders would be allowed entrance into the historic speech. The Secret Service took total possession of the building beginning at 6am, at which time numerous agents and bomb-sniffing dogs began their comprehensive search of the entire building. Only essential Xavier personnel, to include those with keys and access to the elevators, were authorized to remain in the building during the two-hour search. The President and the first family flew into New Orleans

It is a great honor to be back at Xavier University. It’s just inspiring to spend time with people who’ve demonstrated what it means to persevere in the face of tragedy; to rebuild in the face of ruin.” I’m grateful to Jade for her introduction… Jade committed to Xavier, a university that likewise refused to succumb to despair. So Jade, like so many students here at this university, embodies hope.” Less than a month after the storm struck, amidst debris and flood-damaged buildings, President Francis promised that this university would reopen in a matter of months. Some said he was crazy. Some said it couldn’t happen. But they didn’t count on what happens when one force of nature meets another. And by January – four months later – class was in session. Less than a year after the storm, I had the privilege of delivering a commencement address to the largest graduating class in Xavier’s history. That is a symbol of what New Orleans is all about.”

Reflections from Participants

No extra space in a crowded University Center ballroom.

Sunday morning on Air Force One directly from their weeklong vacation at Martha’s Vineyard. The speech was scheduled to begin promptly at 2pm with the doors opening at 12 noon. The first-floor cafeteria was transformed into a full access media and press room where the media pool assembled to conduct their interviews and file their reports for their nationwide audience. Prior to the opening of the doors, the atmosphere was electric. Everyone was told to only bring those items that you would normally expect to carry on an airline flight. And once the doors opened and the guests began to assemble in the ballroom, the excitement steadily grew. The way people were jockeying to get close to the barricades was as if a Mardi Gras parade was preparing to enter the ballroom. Many knew they would be standing for at least an hour, yet did not mind because the president of the United States would soon take the stage.

Several members of Congress as well as the president’s cabinet and administration were in New Orleans for the speech, including U.S. Surgeon General and Xavier alum Dr. Regina Benjamin, Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu, FEMA Director Craig Fugate, and retired 3 star Army General Russell Honore. White House and Secret Service personnel escorted Dr. Francis and me to the service entrance of the University Center when the president was approximately 15 minutes away. Ironically, the president and his family were only a few miles away from the Xavier campus, enjoying a po-boy lunch at the famous mid-city Parkside Tavern Restaurant. A few minutes later we heard the approach of cars as they were driving into the specially designed enclosed tent carport that had been erected for the presidential limousine and escort vehicles. A flurry of staffers and the official white house photographer entered first. And then

we heard the voice of the president as he and Mrs. Obama entered the building. Dr. Francis was the first person to embrace our special guests and to offer official greetings. After taking an official photo in front of the University seal, both presidents spoke for approximately 5 minutes. The Secret Service had advised us that the president would most likely not ride in the elevators, and as predicted President Obama and his party walked up the back stairs to the second floor for brief meetings prior to the start of the speech. The most powerful man in the world, our first African American president, was on the Xavier campus preparing to address a grateful and enthusiastic audience.

A Change of Plans The original scenario had Mrs. Obama standing on the platform throughout the president’s 20-minute speech. However, the first lady, when she became aware of her intended position, instructed the White House event planners that she preferred to be seated during the speech. So when she was asked whom she preferred to be seated with, she was offered several choices, to include the governor and several high level cabinet members. She asked for other suggestions and when a staffer suggested University president Dr. Norman C. Francis, the first lady said yes. Dr. Francis’ seat was moved from behind XG Summer 2011

the security barricade to the restricted area in front of the barricade next to Michelle Obama. Throughout the speech, the president praised the university and its leadership for their commitment to renovating and reopening the campus less than four months following Hurricane Katrina. And at the conclusion of the speech, the president and the first lady spent an extra twenty minutes walking the entire length of the barricades, shaking hands and greeting the exuberant Xavier crowd that anxiously awaited an opportunity to maybe say hello, shake a hand, or better yet exchange a hug and kiss, all of course under the watchful eye of the Secret Service agents. And then it was over. The music had stopped. The cameras were turned off. President Obama had departed the Xavier stage headed back to Washington, DC, leaving behind a grateful and enthusiastic crowd, truly delighted and honored that the president of the United States had visited Xavier University. Xavier University had less than a week to prepare for a visit from President Barack Obama and had successfully staged what will go down in history as perhaps the biggest event in Xavier’s eighty-six year history. standing outside the University Center on the corner of Broadway and Dixon doesn’t provide the same sense of wonder and awe you would expect to experience if, say, you were standing outside the Louvre in Paris, or perhaps, the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art – just take a few steps inside. It won’t take long for you to come to the realization that this UC is more than just a utilitarian building where students go to hang out; for inside you will find an absolute treasure-trove of fabulous paintings, drawings and photography adorning the walls. There are pieces representing artists from all walks of life: works selected for their artistic value and the spirit in which they will hopefully inspire you to think and expand your creative reach. “Filling the campus walls with a rich, diverse art collection fulfills a long-time dream,” said Dr. Norman Francis ‘52, who is in his 44th year as president. “Xavier has always been a place where students can grow on multiple levels - artistically and academically – and this certainly enhances that process.”

All Around Us Most of the 150 pieces of artwork currently on display in the University Center are just a sampling of Xavier’s expansive 5,000 item collection, which itself is comprised of pieces from various other important collections, including but not limited to the Blanche and Norman C. Francis Art Collection, the Bishop Moses Anderson Collection, and the Fine Arts Collection at Xavier (which includes gifts from the Brandywine Printing Workshop, Audreon Bratton, Dr. Regenia A. Perry among others).

Donated by students, alumni and friends of the University, the overall collection includes not only paintings, drawings and photography, but a treasure-trove of multi-media, sculptures and various other art forms. A large percentage of the pieces were created by Xavier alumni. The overall collection has come about largely due to the efforts of Timothy Francis ’80, lawyer and presidential son, and the late John T. Scott ’62, MacArthur “Genius” award-winning artist and long-time faculty member. “The most important thing about the project is that Xavier students are now living in an environment of high quality art – these are not reproductions,” said Scott at the official unveiling of the Blanche and Norman C. Francis Collection back in 2005. The collection was begun as a testament to the Francis family’s lifelong commitment to XU and to the arts, as well as a manifestation of their vision of the University as an art-rich environment to work, to live and, more importantly, to learn.

“This is a national collection of renowned artists that the students will read about in books – and they can see the original works right here at Xavier”, noted Tim Francis, who has not only donated works from his own collection but has also facilitated the donation of numerous works from other donors.

The Francis collection itself – close to 200 pieces – includes works by both students and professional artists. The student works represent the best works of art completed by students in the University’s legendary Art Department, dating back to 1957. Many of those students have gone on to make their mark in the art world, including: Frank Hayden ‘57, Terrance Osborne ‘00, Martin Payton ‘73, Steve Prince ‘91, Bill Pajaud ‘46 and Kimberly Dummons ‘95.

Intersection (1998) by Arthur Silverman, a gift from Tim Francis for the Blanche and Norman C. Francis Collection, greets visitors at the St. Katharine Drexel Drive entrance to the University Center. Silverman, an urologist by trade, began sculpting in the mid-1970s as a hobby, and later became a full-time sculptor. He is best known for large-scale public sculptural works that are based on the tetrahedron, a geometric form with four triangular faces.

Twins (1997-98) was donated to the Blanche and Norman C. Francis Collection at Xavier University of Louisiana by the artist, XU art professor and former Art Department chair Ron Bechet, who is best known for his vibrantly-colored paintings of lush outdoor scenes, many inspired by rural areas throughout Louisiana. The oil on canvas rendering occupies a prominent place in the University Center’s 1st floor lobby.

In addition to the student works, the collection includes renowned artists such as Scott, Aaron Douglas, Richmond Barthe, Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Sam Gilliam, Jacob Lawrence, Fred Brown, Allison Stewart, Russell Gordon, Ed Whitmann, Mitch Gaudet, Willie Birch, Richard Yarde and Hale Woodruff. Legendary art professor Sister Mary Lurana Neely, S.B.S., and current art professor Ron Bechet are also represented. The university’s overall collection of art has been further enhanced by another significant contribution from the Most Reverend Moses Anderson, S.S.E. ’53, a former XU chaplain who donated his own extensive collection to the university out of his deep respect for the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament.

“I made this gift to Xavier because of my indebtedness to the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for my vocation,” said Anderson, who has retired as Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit. “I would not be where I am today if not for them.” The Anderson Collection – which includes more than 160 pieces – contains some the earliest works by Scott and Hayden, among others, as well as some African artifacts. Less than half of University’s collection of artwork is currently on display, and, for the most part, is pretty much confined to the University Center, the Administration Building, the Library Resource Building and the new Qatar Pharmacy Pavilion. Eventually, however, pieces of the collection will grace every public space on campus. “Art has to be seen to be fully appreciated,” said Francis. “We want our students to see them every day.” XG

Portrait/Young Woman (1998), a lithograph by Tomie Arai, is a gift of the Brandywine Printmaking Workshop to the Fine Arts Collection in honor of the late John T. Scott ’62, MacArthur “Genius” award-winning artist and long-time faculty member. The artist’s works incorporate silk-screened family photographs that address issues of identity and cultural memory, with a particular focus on her experiences as a third-generation Japanese American. It is located on the 2nd floor of the Administration Building.

Eucharist by Frank Hayden, was the gift of Bishop Moses B. Anderson, S.S.E. Xavier is the repository of numerous works by Hayden, a transplanted Louisianan best known for his lyrical sculptural works in wood, bronze, stone and other materials, many illustrating Biblical themes. Made of plaster, the artwork is viewable in the Library Resource Center’s 6th floor Nissan Gallery.

Cantave was a member of the Centre d’Art, which is noted for promoting the art form that became known as “Naïve Art”, or “intuitive art”, characterized by vibrant color, emotional intensity, and a sense of sweeping, gestural movement. 523 GRADUATES ACCENT COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY 523 graduates received their degrees from the College of Arts & Sciences, the College of Pharmacy, and graduate programs during Xavier’s 84th annual commencement. National Urban League President/CEO and former New Orleans mayor Marc H. Morial was keynote speaker at the event. The university also awarded honorary degrees to businesswoman and philanthropist Camille Hanks Cosby, BET President/ CEO Debra L. Lee, and 1948 Olympic track medalist and businessman Herbert P. Douglas, Jr. during the ceremony. A total of 114 graduated with honors, including 22 earning summa cum laude honors, 29 earning magna cum laude honors and another 52 earning cum laude distinction. An additional 11 students earned graduate honors. Steve Morgan Jr., a biology/pre-med major from Gray LA (H.L. Bourgeois High) headed this year’s group of summa cum laude graduates with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Commencement 2011 XU Degree for Olympic Medalist — 71 Years After Enrolling

n unfinished chapter in the remarkable life of Herbert Douglas, Jr. came to a most satisfactory conclusion in 2011 when the 89-year old businessman and storied Olympic champion finally received a Xavier degree 71 years after enrolling. “It’s a storybook ending for me,” said Douglas, who was awarded an honorary degree during the University’s 84th annual commencement. “Can you believe it? Xavier really started my path in life. I learned academics there. I learned how to run. And I learned religion.” Douglas arrived at Xavier in the fall of 1940 after being recruited to compete for future Hall-of-Famer Ralph Metcalfe’s men’s track and field program. Douglas excelled – in 1941 he set a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship meet record in the outdoor long jump, and in 1942 he teamed with William Morton, Clarence Doak and Howard Mitchell to make Xavier the first HBCU (historically black college or university) to win a relay at the Penn Relays. The quartet won the 440-yard relay in 41.7 seconds. But the demands of World War II forced Douglas to leave XU in 1942 after two years. He returned home to help at his father’s Pittsburgh parking garage. “My father had been blind for several years and needed help,” Douglas said. “He was losing employees to the military and to war-related industries. He had a 24-hour garage, and he could not find enough reliable workers. I wanted so much to stay at Xavier, but the circumstances just wouldn’t allow me.” After the war Douglas returned to college – but at his hometown University of Pittsburgh, where today he is best remembered as the only Pitt athlete to win an Olympic medal AND score a touchdown against the University “[Douglas] is best of Notre Dame. He is also credited along with remembered as the only classmate Jimmy Joe Robinson in teaming up Pitt athlete to win an to break a series of racial barriers at the school – Olympic medal AND score including integrating the Pitt football program.

A true student-athlete, he received both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Pitt. Douglas went on to win the bronze medal in the long jump at the 1948 Olympics in London.

Douglas joined Schieffelin & Company (now Schieffelin & Somerset) in 1963 where he became the third African-American to reach the level of vice-president of a major North American corporation. While at the innovative wine and spirits importer, he is credited with almost single-handedly introducing the high quality, premium Hennessy Cognac and Moet & Chandon Champagne brands to a growing African American middle class. “I have been blessed in so many ways,” Douglas said. According to the U.S. Olympic Committee, Douglas is the fourth-oldest living U.S. track and field Olympic medalist. Three other medalists from the 1948 U.S. team — sprinter Cliff Bourland and shot-putters Jim Delaney and Wilbur Thompson — are older. Continued

Commencement 2011 Douglas (continued) The honorary degree was far from a take-him-off-the-shelf-and-dust-him-off moment for Douglas. The very next week he was back at his alma mater for a dinner he helped plan as a centennial salute to African-American athletes at Pitt. And officials at the Penn Relays want him to help plan a fundraising dinner within the next year. Douglas also plans to return to the scene of his Olympic triumph when London hosts the Olympics in 2012. “When will he really retire? That’s a good question,” said Douglas’ wife, Minerva. “I would say never. He’s like that (Energizer) bunny. He just keeps going. He finishes one thing, and then he moves on to another. He gets involved in a lot of things.”

The trip to New Orleans and Xavier was the first for Douglas since 1992, when he attended the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials. The night before commencement, he and the other special guests were treated to a dinner at Dooky Chase restaurant with Xavier officials. “That’s some good Creole food,” Douglas said. “You know, Dooky Chase opened the year I got to Xavier, 71 years ago. I couldn’t afford it then.” XG

What ’s Hap p ening. . .

Lieteau Selected For Alumnus Of The Year Honors Halvan Lieteau ’53 of New Orleans,

a successful corporate businessman and entrepreneur on the national and international level, was honored as the University’s top alumni at the 2010 Alumni Homecoming Gala. He was presented the Victor H. Labat Alumnus of the Year award by National Alumni president Frederick Carter ‘69, Dr. Joseph Labat ’59, and XU President Norman Francis ‘52 during the annual Gala, the traditional highlight of alumni homecoming week. The annual gala drew a sellout crowd of 447 attendees to the University Center Ballroom this year. Class agents for the 15 special five-year reunion classes presented the University with gifts totaling $253,957. The Class of ‘60 led the way with 46 members contributing $33,828.

“Tonight we honor a prolific, tireless worker on behalf of Xavier University,” said Carter of this year’s honoree in his introduction. “His efforts on behalf of alumni association chapters have taken him from New York to New Orleans.” A long-time employee of IBM in New York, Lieteau retired to New Orleans, where he owned and operated Lieteau’s Hallmark Shops and was General Manager of Pioneer Services Incorporated, a provider of engineering services to oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. While in New York he served as president for that city’s alumni chapter, and recently served in the same capacity for the New Orleans Alumni Chapter #1, where he coined the phrase “The Home Team.” He also assisted the National Alumni Association as a member of the Fundraising Committee and has assisted the Office of Alumni Relations as a volunteer with the Annual Fund Phone-a-thon. Lieteau has been actively engaged as a consultant and speaker in the areas of financial planning, manufacturing management and general business operations. Presently he serves as a Board Member and Chairman of the Education Committee for the New Orleans Rotary Club. His dedication to the mission of St. Katharine Drexel also extends to his support of Xavier University Preparatory High School (The Prep) where his service includes hands-on and financial support for The Prep’s annual fundraiser “Remember When.” In keeping with his commitment to the University, he is ensuring the continued growth of Xavier by making a provision in his will to benefit the University, thus establishing for himself and his wife, Theyon, a perpetual legacy. 39

Rae Lundy’s Journey to Achievement For Rae Lundy ‘06, an Atlanta GA native, her path to the University of Notre Dame was a little roundabout, but her rise to success at the University has been nothing but straightforward! Rae was in her junior year at Xavier when the devastation of Katrina hit. She was among the four Xavier students to be welcomed into classes by Notre Dame a few weeks into the fall 2005 semester. Though it was hard leaving Xavier, Rae’s transition was somewhat smoothed by the fact that she had already worked at Notre Dame the preceding summer as a Ronald E. McNair Scholar. That summer under the direction of Professor George Howard, she conducted a study on ethnic identity and its role as a predictor of “face”—perceptions of saving it and losing it—in both African Americans and European Americans. After graduating from Xavier cum laude in 2006, Rae returned to Notre Dame to continue her work on ethnic diversity. She received a master’s degree in counseling psychology in 2008. This coming fall Rae will receive her doctorate in psychology from the University for her work examining the influence of racial identity development and perceived discrimination on psychological well-being in African Americans. For her work in the area of diversity, she has received several awards. Beyond earning her doctorate, Ms. Rae hopes to extend her passion for discrimination work through research and clinical practice at one of the nation’s Historically Black Colleges or Universities. She has accepted a position for next year at Texas State University, San Marcos and will begin there shortly after defending her dissertation this coming August. XG Summer 2011

In looking back on her life, Lundy says, “I wouldn’t be who I am apart from the tragedy of the hurricane. While I lost all my possessions, I discovered that I am resilient and able to handle unexpected obstacles. How one emerges intact – and even better – from misfortune takes an entire range of skills I hope one day to impart to my own clients.”

Alums Honored By UNCF Two Xavier alums have been honored by the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) for their distinguished service to their alma mater and outstanding achievements in their professional, civic and community activities. Dr. Elaine Parker Adams ’61, a retired educator and administrator in Houston TX, was presented the National Alumni Council (NCA) Outstanding Alumnus Award for Xavier at the NAC Leadership Conference held recently in Atlanta GA, while Keva Gwin ’00, senior medical science liaison for Shire Pharmaceuticals in Chicago IL, was presented the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award for Xavier.

XU Alum Appointed As Federal Judge Brian Jackson ’82, a partner in the law firm of Liskow & Lewis where he specialized in commercial litigation, government investigations and white collar criminal defense, was nominated to serve on the federal bench for the U.S. District Court, Middle District of Louisiana by President Barack Obama. He was confirmed by the U.S. Senate and commissioned in June 2010.

1940s XG sadly notes the passing of another XU legend, Dr. Charles Bell ’47, one of the first African Americans to graduate from the University of Notre Dame as well as one of the first to earn a Ph.D. in statistics. A professor of mathematics for two years at Xavier, he went on to teach at seven other major U.S. colleges, among other endeavors.

1950s Dr. Norman Francis ‘52 (president) was presented the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award by American Association of Blacks in Education (AABHE) at its national convention, held in Atlanta GA. He also gave the keynote address. A.P. Tureaud Jr. ‘57, was awarded an honorary degree from LSU. The Baton Rouge school’s first African-American undergraduate student in 1953, he spent less than a semester on campus before a court ordered him to leave the university. He transferred to Xavier, where he earned his degree. He has spent the past 38 years as a professional educator in White Plains NY. Maria Sly George ’58, was presented Louisiana’s 2010 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service, the association’s most prestigious and visible volunteer award for community services. She was also presented the prestigious Louisiana Retired Teachers Association Name of Fame award at the Association’s fall meeting. She is also the District I President. Jeniece Houze ‘59, was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for St. Jerome Parish in Los Angeles CA.

1960s Dr. Gilbert Rochon ’68, was inaugurated as the sixth president of Tuskegee University. He previously served as a senior research scientist at the Rosen Center for Advanced Computing and director of the Terrestrial Observatory at Purdue University and as associate vice president for collaborative research and engagement.

1970s Warren A. Fleet ‘71, was elected to partnership in the law firm of Jones, Walker, Waechter, Poitevent, Carrere & Denegre L.L.P. Based in Baton Rouge LA, he specializes in energy issues for the firm, which provides a comprehensive range of legal services to a national and international corporate client base through offices in five states and the District of Columbia. Rhaoul A. Guillaume, Sr., ’71, president of GOTECH, Inc., was presented the 2011 Andrew M. Lockett Award for Civic Activities by the Louisiana Engineering Society (LES) in recognition of his distinguished public service without compensation for those services. Cheryl M. Thomas ’71, was appointed senior director of development at Tuskegee University. Previously she held the positions of director of planned giving and senior development officer for major gifts at Meharry Medical College and XU. Dr. Milton Moore ’76, a Houston TX dermatologist and founder of Moore Unique Skin Care, has announced a new product – Silky Hydroglide – a shave gel and post-shave skin rejuvenator. Dr. Carlen Luke McLin ’77, was named chief of staff at Tuskegee University. Previously she served as assistant dean, Division of the Natural Sciences & Public Health, and chair of the School of Public Health at Dillard. Harry Johnson, Sr. ’77, president and CEO for the Washington DC Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, has been named recipient of the Trumpet Awards Foundation’s “President’s Award,” which recognizes Black Americans who have succeeded against immense odds. Dr. Troy Lynn Baldwin ’79, interim assistant vice president for development at Dillard University, earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Urban Higher Education from Jackson State University. She earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at XU. Dr. Lorena S. Chicoye ’79, corporate medical director for managed care & network development at Baptist Health South Florida in Miami, was named one of the “50 Most Powerful Black Professionals in South Florida by Legacy Magazine.

1980s Jay Aronowitz ’80, was promoted to senior executive service (SES) in the U.S. Army, and is serving as the deputy assistant secretary (Force Management and Resources) in the Pentagon where he is the principal advisor to the assistant secretary of the army on all matters pertaining to military, civilian and contractor manpower. John Boutte ’80, has been named Big Easy Entertainer of the Year by the New Orleans’ Gambit magazine. Timothy Francis ’80, donated two large sculptures to the ever growing Blanche and Norman C. Francis Collection. Brian Jackson ’82, is serving as federal judge for the U.S. District Court, Middle District of Louisiana. He was nominated by President Barack Obama. He also delivered the commencement address for the Southern University Law Center.

Dr. Geneva Stark Price ’82, earned her Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy from the University of Louisville. Dr. Conchetta White Fulton (pharmacy) ‘85, ‘98 was elected secretary/treasurer of the Louisiana State Chapter of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP). The Rev. Jeffrey Ott, OP ’88, former XU campus chaplain, is serving as pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Atlanta GA. Ironically, the church is one of the buildings for which St. Katharine Drexel provided funds. Klyne Smith ’89, has been promoted to vice president of transformation services for the Asia Pacific region for AlcatelLucent in Singapore, where he is responsible for providing leadership in the area of complex solution delivery. He is also in the dissertation phase of his pursuit of a doctorate degree in software engineering at Southern Methodist University.

1990s Lawrence C. Houston ‘90 and ‘02, was ordained a permanent deacon for the Archidocese of New Orleans. He is assigned to St. Peter Claver Church. Steve Prince ’91, accepted a position as assistant professor of art at Montgomery College in Germantown MD. He also did the artwork for a new book, African American History Reconsidered, written by Michigan State professor Pero Dagbovie and was interviewed for another book, Ministry Unplugged: Uncommon Calls to Serve. Prentice White ’91, has authored a book, It’s Not Bad to Be Allergic, which recounts how her family coped with her daughter’s struggle to deal with multiple food allergies. Dr. Katrice Albert ’94, vice provost for Equity, Diversity & Community Outreach at LSU-Baton Rouge, was honored for her tireless advocacy for gender equity and her exemplary strong leadership at the Louisiana Conference for Women. Nolan Knight ’96, an attorney with the Texas-based law firm of Munsch Hardt Kopf & Harr, P.C., has been named a “Rising Star” by Thompson Reuters in a special supplement published in newspapers and magazines across the country. He specializes in environmental laws and regulations. Carlos (CJ) Minor ’96, educator and athletic coach in the Douglas County (Georgia) School System, has successfully defended his dissertation and earned a Doctor of Education degree in Educational Administration from Clark Atlanta University. Tahira Stalberte ’96, was named chief communications officer for Durham (NC) Public Schools. A media relations specialist, she previously worked with CharlotteMecklenburg Schools (NC) managing media relations and crisis, internal and external communications efforts for the district.

She has also been appointed to the national faculty for the National Science Resource Center where she promotes effective teaching of science preK-16. Ben Jackson ’97, senior financial reporting manager at Beiersdorf, Inc., was named 2011 MBA of the Year by the Westchester/Greater Connecticut Chapter of the National Black MBA Association. Miller Boyd ‘98, a PhD. candidate in the Department of History at the University of Mississippi, has been named the 2011 Robert Eldridge Seiler Fellow by the Supreme Court of Missouri Historical Society. Dr. Nadiyah Morris Coleman ’99, was named director of the New Orleans Afterschool Partnership, where she coordinates a new initiative that seeks to increase access to quality afterschool programs to children in the Greater New Orleans area. Dr. Trimiko Melancon ’99, has joined the Loyola University-New Orleans faculty as an assistant professor of English. She earned her Ph.D. in Afro-American Studies from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

2000s Leonard Lightfoot ‘00, earned a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Michigan State University, where he also previously received his M.S. degree. Terrance Osborne ’00, donated a painting of his Great Dane “Toaster” which was raffled off to benefit the Plaquemines (LA) Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). Dr. Draion Burch ‘01, chief resident at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and the St. John Providence Health System Osteopathic Division MacombOakland Hospital in Warren MI, was elected as the intern and resident representative to the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Board of Trustees. He was named the program’s OBGYN Resident of the Year.

Two XU alums – Dr. Kelley Harris-Johnson ’03, assistant faculty associate of biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; and Dr. Gregory Bogin ’03, assistant research professor of chemical engineering at the Colorado School of Mines – served as judges for the oral and poster presentations at the Emerging Researchers National (ERN) Conference, held in Washington DC. Both were also recognized by the ERN as former recipients of the David and Lucille Packard Graduate Scholar Fellowships. Celeste Parker ’03, was named assistant professor and clinical supervisor of communicative disorders in the Department of Allied Health Sciences at Nicholls State University. Jared Brossett ’04, state representative for Louisiana’s District 97, completed the Senior Executives in State and Local Government program at Harvard University. Dr. Lyrial Chism ’04, is working for the National Security Agency. She earned her Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Mississippi. Candice Stewart ’05, the first African American woman to hold the Miss Louisiana USA crown, was reunited with her birth mother during the premiere of the cable television series Searching For on the new Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) in February 2011.

Grace Andoh ’08, has been accepted into the Temple University School of Podiatry. Damien Cuffie ’08, has been accepted into the postbaccalaureate program at the Meharry College School of Dentistry. Allison Hudson ’08, editor for the Donaldsonville (LA) Chief newspaper, has been nominated for the Louisiana Legislative Women’s Caucus Foundation Women of Excellence Award for 2011 in the Media and Public Relations category. She was also featured as one of the “Top 25 Editors and Publishers under 35” in the April Edition of Editor and Publishers Magazine. Monica Majors ’08 (graduate placement) was named assistant director for graduate placement in the Graduate Placement/EXCEL Program Office. She previously served as program coordinator. Rida Nadeem ’08, was accepted into medical school at the American University of the Caribbean. Terry Richardson II ’08, has been accepted into the physical therapy schools at USC, Alabama State University, Hampton University and Old Dominion University. Brandon Williams ’08, has been accepted into medical school at the University of South Alabama.

Jessica Brumfield ’09, has been accepted into the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine-Georgia.

Amber C. Williamson ’05, has earned a master’s degree in information systems management from the Keller Graduate School of Management. She is currently pursuing a 2nd master’s in network and communications management and wireless communications.

Letitia Hopkins ’09, candidate for MA degree in museum studies at SUNO had her thesis exhibit at the McKenna Museum of African American Art. The exhibit explored voodoo through the lens of religious tolerance and explores voodoo stereotypes.

Maryse Holly ’06, a graduate student at Cornell University studying international agriculture and rural development, has been selected to participate in a three-week course in rice production at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines. It is fully funded by the National Science Foundation.

Andrea Lee ’09, was accepted into medical school at Southern Illinois University.

Dr. Mahasin Muhajid ‘01, is serving as an assistant professor of public health at the University of California, Berkeley. She earned her Ph.D. in biostatistics and epidemiology from the University of Michigan and was a Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society Fellow at Harvard University.

Breyanna Grays ’07, a third-year student at the Indiana University School of Medicine, was named one of only eight recipients of the American Academy of Neurology Foundation’s 2011 Minority Scholars Program award, which recognizes outstanding achievements as a medical student. She intends to specialize in neurology after she receives her medical degree next year.

Jamika Pessoa ’01, premiered her new cable television show, Home Made Simple, in January on TLC (The Learning Channel).

Ashley Ross-Smith ’08, was accepted into dental school at Baylor University and the University of Texas-Houston. CharDae Love ‘08, earned a master’s degree in public administration from the University of New Orleans. She is currently employed by the federal government in New Orleans.

Shauntell Myles ‘09, was accepted into the Master of Science (chemistry) program at Hampton University. Nana-Aisha Adamu ’10, was accepted into medical school at the University of Arkansas and the University of Tennessee. Acadiana Chapter The Acadiana Chapter celebrated the Feast Day of St. Katharine Drexel with Mass at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church with a reception following. On April 16, 2011 the chapter hosted a fundraiser at A La Carte Restaurant in Lafayette. The Acadiana Chapter is actively recruiting alumni from the Lafayette area. Atlanta Chapter The Atlanta Chapter is increasing efforts to engage alumni, students, perspective students, and parents from across the greater Atlanta area. Last July, the chapter hosted its first family day picnic and awarded over $2,100 in book scholarships to incoming freshmen and current students. Atlanta area alumni participated in the Saints and Falcons rivalry with an alumni mixer/tailgate during the highly anticipated Monday night football game last December. On March 13, the chapter hosted a mass and brunch in honor of the Feast Day of St. Katharine Drexel. Over 125 area alumni and their families joined the annual celebration at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. The Chapter is currently working to increase its membership; a membership drive will be held during the summer months. Birmingham Chapter The Birmingham Alumni Chapter recently held elections. The new officers are President, Kelli Caulfield ‘04; 1st Vice-President, Eliza Wells ‘03; Adrian Mason ‘73, 2nd VicePresident; Jacqueline Black ‘76, Recording Secretary; Treasurer, Livingstone Lewis Jr. ‘71; Chaplain, Jean Benjamin-Vappie ‘73; and Parliamentarian, Victor R. Spencer ‘79. The chapter hosted their 17th Annual Jazz Brunch and Silent Auction on September 18, 2010 to benefit Xavier University student scholarships. Frederick Carter, President of the National Alumni Association served as the Chapter’s special invited guest. Former recipients of the Birmingham Scholarship also attended and gave words of appreciation. The Chapter has held several networking events to increase membership and promote Xavier to the Birmingham community. Baton Rouge Chapter The Baton Rouge Alumni Chapter celebrated the Feast Day of St. Katharine Drexel with a mass at St. Joseph’s Cathedral followed by its annual Frank Hayden Jazz Brunch at the Lod Cook Conference Center. Over 100 alumni and friends participated in the celebration where Judge Brian Jackson‘82 swore in officers for the 2011 term. All proceeds benefitted the Frank Hayden Scholarship Fund. The Chicago Alumni Chapter continues to serve as alumni recruiters at college fairs throughout the Chicagoland area. In August the Chapter sponsored the Annual William J. Hill Freshmen and Parents Welcome Reception and distributed over $4,500 in book scholarships. The Annual Lake Michigan Cruise is scheduled for June 26, 2011. Proceeds from this event will support the chapter’s Incoming Freshman Fund and the Yvonne Allen Scholarship Fund at the University. Chapter The Northern California Chapter hosted its annual Day at the Races at the Golden Gate Fields in Albany California. Proceeds from the event support a scholarship to a Northern California student. Chapter members participated in the local UNCF (United Negro College Fund) Walk-a-thon and provided gift cards to freshmen students from the Northern California area. The Chapter continues to attend college fairs in the area to promote Xavier University to interested students and their families. Southern California Chapter The Southern California Chapter recently held their elections. As a result of their fundraising efforts the chapter contributed $20,000 to the University’s Annual Fund and $2,000 to the St. Katharine Drexel Chapel Campaign. On March 6th the Southern California Chapter celebrated the Feast Day of Saint Katharine Drexel with mass at Saint Jerome Catholic Church and a reception following. Members of the chapter continue to assist the University in its recruiting efforts by participating in numerous college fairs. Monthly meetings are held on the second Sunday of every month. Carla Gibson Baker ’77, a professional accountant and judicial assistant to Karen Wells Roby, Federal Magistrate Judge for the U.S. Eastern District Court, in New Orleans, has contributed significant financial support to the University throughout her lifetime, and now, by making a provision in her will, she will be able to leave behind her legacy at Xavier. “My decision to name Xavier as a beneficiary in my life insurance policy was an easy one. Although I contribute to Xavier’s Annual Fund Drive, I wanted to do more. As I evaluated my last will and testament, I decided to add Xavier as an irrevocable beneficiary on one of my life insurance policies and made this decision known to my loved ones.” “It gives me great satisfaction in knowing that when I am no longer here to make financial contributions to Xavier, a final contribution will be made on my behalf to help continue the legacy of Saint Katherine Drexel. I love Xavier and it is my humble way of saying “ThankYou” for helping me to become the person that I am today.”
