About Campus El Sabio

Welcome to Campus El Sabio! A full-service international study and sports centre providing a high standard of accommodation, dining services, sports and leisure facilities as well as a conference and meeting venue.

We are specially committed to schools, colleges and groups on study trips abroad, carrying out both short and long-term education and sports programs.

Attached to our international academic purpose, we are also proud of presenting our Sage College, The British School of Jerez, which covers from the earliest year’s stages to higher education, providing schooling to national and international students.

The center is located on a privileged area, 3 km from the city of Jerez de la Frontera, in the South of Spain (please see page 3 for more details of the city and area). At the time of founding our Campus, we deliberately chose a location that gathered the requirements of being a pleasant, high level residential and well-connected place, right next to a 27-holes golf course. This unique environment makes Campus El Sabio the perfect destination for students.

Jerez and the Surrounding Area The city of Jerez is located in the province of Cádiz, in the autonomous region of Andalucía in the South of Spain. The area has always been a cultural melting pot, with a rich historical and cultural heritage. The city enjoys a favourable climate. It is the home of the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art • The population is 205,000 • The city is the transport and communications hub of the province with an airport, train and bus stations • The economy of Jerez is centred on the wine industry, with exports of sherry worldwide, the cultivation of fruits, grains, and vegetables and horse and cattle husbandry is also important to the local economy, in addition to tourism

What Is Our Objective? The long term objective of Campus El Sabio is to develop a truly international study centre on our premises, which will offer unique learning experiences for local as well as international students. Campus El Sabio’s newly built study centre aims at providing comfortable and affordable accommodation, lecture, conference and sports facilities, food, and a range of activities for educational institutions or individuals who wish to visit the area for a week, months, or even longer. We completed construction of our facilities by the end of 2008, and all licenses and approvals were in place by early 2010. Since then, our development has been divided into two main phases. The first consisted of developing a British School mainly for local students, as well as expats, as the basis of our operations (see the following page). We opened the schools in September 2010, and two years later, we had already exceeded 200 students. With the first phase to a large degree consolidated, we are now moving into our second phase, which is to focus on bringing in international schools and universities to our premises, with the purpose of creating an international enriching educational environment to the benefit of our own students, as well as those from visiting schools and universities. We have already had several international colleges here on both shorter and longer educational visits (see page 14), who have arrived on their own initiative without any campaign from us. We are now looking to form long term relationships with schools and universities from a wide range of disciplines and from different countries, and this prospectus have been produced to help us achieve that target.

4

Our British School: Sage College Sage College is a British School, which means we mainly follow the British National Curriculum, in addition to some Spanish subjects, in order to provide our students with a double certification. All our students get their certificates and diplomas through the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). This is the world’s largest provider of international qualifications for 14 – 19 years old, and a part of the University of Cambridge. It follows the British Education System, and CIE is responsible for the assessment and diplomas of Sage College. Nearly 9,000 schools in 160 countries around the world offer CIE qualifications, with candidates from 5 to over 70 years. CIE is part of Cambridge Assessment, Europe’s largest assessment agency. Currently we have more than 200 students from EYFS to Key Stage 4 (IGCSE). By 2014, we will also offer the two final years (A-levels).

Festivals and Events: January - March Regardless of when you choose to visit us, there will almost always be something going on in Jerez or the surrounding area. Some of the festivals and events through the year include: January: Los Reyes Magos. The three Wise Men will travel around the town on floats decorated according to a chosen theme. The Kings are accompanied by matching helpers who throw sweets and presents into the crowd. Fiesta de San Anton, Jerez de la Frontera. Lots of fun activities for animals, children and adults. Food Festivals in Cádiz: these free food extravaganzas around the city mark the official start of the Cadiz Carnival season. First off is the Pestiñada, where pestiños, typical Andalucian Christmas pastries, are enjoyed together with typical local songs from previous years’ carnivals and anis (in Plaza de San Francisco). Then, the following day, is the Erizada - erizos are sea urchins (in calle La Palma), and the Ostionada,– the ostion is a local type of ostra, or oyster (in Plaza San Antonio). Romeria de San Sebastian, Conil de la Frontera. February: The Carnival of Cádiz is one of the best-known carnivals in the world. The whole city participates in the carnival for more than two weeks each year, and the presence of this fiesta is almost constant in the city because of the rehearsals, recitals, and contests held throughout the year. Dia de Andalucia (28th February). This festival commemorates the 1980 referendum which gave Andalusia its autonomous status. Most Andalucians have far stronger loyalty to their region than to their country. March: Jerez Flamenco Festival: Andalusia is the birthplace of Flamenco, making Jerez a fitting host for the world’s leading Flamenco festival. Thousands of dance students gather each year for workshops and master classes on the full range of flamenco styles and skills. Holy Week (Semana Santa) normally takes place in March, and occasionally in April. The Passion of Christ, or Easter Week, known in Spain as Semana Santa is the most important celebration in the country. Bull runs in Vejer de la Frontera and Arcos de la Frontera. Bulls are released onto the streets of these white villages in Andalusia at Easter. They chase members of the public who attempt to escape the animals. A tradition that stretches back centuries.

17

Festivals and Events: April - June April: The Seville Spring Fair, La Feria de Abril de Sevilla, is held in the Andalusian capital of Seville. The fair generally begins two weeks after the Semana Santa, or Easter Holy Week. The fair officially begins at midnight on Monday, and runs six days, ending on the following Sunday. For the duration of the fair, the fairgrounds and a vast area on the far bank of the Guadalquivir River are totally covered in rows of casetas (individual decorated marquee tents which are temporarily built on the fairground). May: The Jerez Horse Fair (Feria del Caballo) is an exciting and lively event that brings the entire city together. The history of the Jerez Horse Fair goes back many centuries, to the commercial livestock fairs that were established in April and September, during the reign of Alfonso X El Sabio (the Wise). The Spanish Moto Grand Prix normally takes place in Motor Racing Circuit of Jerez, attracting bikers from all over Europe, with enormous crowds to the city centre and the province in general. The traditional and spectacular red tuna fishing in Barbate: this valued and rare kind of tuna starts a long journey down from Northern Europe to the warmer Mediterranean Sea. In spring, massive shoals arrive in the coast of Cádiz where an ancient net-fishing method makes it a real spectacle worth seeing and, of course, later tasting at any local restaurant. June: El Rocio. This pilgrimage is the most famous in the region, attracting nearly a million people from across Andalusia and the entire country, and beyond. This cult dates back to the 13th century. Feria de Conil de la Frontera (El Colorado, in the beginning of June) and Algeciras (end of June). Traditional seaside festivals of “Noche de San Juan”. Corpus Christi, a festival that celebrates the presence of Christ in the holy water. Nearby towns and cities famous for their Corpus Christi festivals include Cadiz and Zahara de la Sierra (Cadiz).

18

Festivals and Events: July - September July: July is the most important month for bullfighting in El Puerto Santa María, one of the strongest and deeply rooted traditions in Spain. El Puerto de Santa Maria has an old prestige for bullfights. Feria del Carmen y de la Sal, San Fernando, Cádiz. The Virgen del Carmen fiestas are celebrated in towns along Andalusia’s coast, from Huelva to Almeria. The Virgen del Carmen is the patron saint of fishermen, and the image is taken from her church in a procession through the streets of her town, and then goes around the harbour to bless the fishing boats.

August: Sanlucar de Barrameda, neighbouring city of Jerez, is famous for its horse racing which dates back to 1845 and takes place along a 1,800m stretch of beach at the mouth of the Río Guadalquivir. This is a thrilling spectacle where real racehorses thunder across the sand watched by a large noisy crowd of spectators. Fiesta de Moros y Cristianos in Benanahoma. Festival in honour of the town’s patron saint, San Antonio de Padua. Battles, bullfights and concerts are among the events every year. Feria de la Urta in Rota, a gastronomic fair celebrating the sea bream.

19

September: Jerez’s sherry festival, known locally as Fiestas de Otoño (the Autumn Fiestas) is a three week party involving sherry, horses and flamenco. The origin of the festival is the annual celebration of the grape harvest. Ronda’s Famous Féria Goyesca. It takes place annually in the first week of September. Fiestas Patronales de Nuestra Señora de Regla (Chipiona, Cádiz). This fiesta has always attracted big-name singers. Romeria de Nuestra Señora de los Santos, Alcala de los Gazules, Cádiz. Golf Village Campus El Sabio is located next to Sherry Golf, a 27-hole golf course of a very high standard, and surrounded by another seven golf courses at less than 40 km distance. Being located in the centre, and providing a full-service facility, we have taken the liberty to call ourselves a ”Golf Village”. In our Golf Village, we have developed a close cooperation with Swing Golf Academy, represented by Pedro Linhart and Miguel Ángel Valerón. Pedro, the head-coach, has been the Spanish Golf Federation coach for several years, a Tour-player since 1984 and a European-tournament champion in 1999. Together we provide a combination of full-board, accommodation, education and golf training which involves: • Golf as a part of Sage College School Curriculum. This gives our students the chance to mix regular studies with golf, especially for those national or international players who aim at becoming professional golfers but doing their secondary or upper secondary education at the same time. In this respect, we invite golf federations, golf clubs, or individuals to contact us • Golf as an extracurricular activity: a high performance training to support those of our students who might have a special interest or talent for golf • A venue for golf training or practicing for golf clubs, federations and individuals for a week or longer stays, in combination with other cultural activities or courses that we offer from International Campus El Sabio so that players enjoy a truly immersion in the Spanish culture

21

• We ourselves are developing our own golf club, also open to external players or others who want to take up golf

Football Village Next to our premises in Spain is an area of 20 000 m2 where we plan to build three football pitches, one of 68 x 105 m, and two of 40 x 68 m, in order to develop very good training facilities for football here that players can combine with a British education. In the meantime, we have access to very good facilities 1.8 kilometres away, including a stadium for 8,000 spectators. Other pitches of a very good standard are also available within a 15 minutes drive. We especially invite football clubs to participate in the project, and the outline of the plan is as follows: • To start three football teams at senior, under-18, and under-16 level. The club will be duly registered with the proper football associations, and the three teams participate in their respective leagues • This is a project that will be done in combination with education at Sage College. For our Cadete team (under-16), we accept students from 14 – 16 years of age, in combination with minimum five IGCSE subjects. For the other two teams (under-18 and senior) we accept students of 16 years and above with a limited selection of A-level subjects. This way clubs can secure a basic education for their academy players or others • We allow a maximum of 25 players or each team, in principle 3 goalkeepers, 8 defenders, 8 midfielders, and 6 forwards, but this can be changed • Full-board seven days per week (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), accommodation in double-room, full-time education (IGCSE or A-levels) with Cambridge exams approved in over 160 countries, including all of the European Union • Annual player fees included • Football training with coach (6 hours per week – 2 hours three days per week, or others according to the needs of each club) • Participation in the corresponding Spanish league, with all matches played in a stadium • Clubs pay per player per month. This means that if some players choose to return midyear, you only pay for the months consumed We strongly believe players will gain very valuable experience from such an experience, which will be very useful if they later play in the Premier League or similar.

Spanish Village Spanish Village is a term we use for our Spanish courses. The reasoning behind this is the variety in the offer. Studying Spanish with us is an experience, where we invite you to take part in a cultural immersion, which extends beyond the classroom. In addition to our Campus, which in itself is “a little village”, we also make use of the surrounding area with its activities, like flamenco dancing, Spanish cooking classes, and excursions, where you have an opportunity to interact with the locals, and which all might form part of the learning of the language. Please refer to page 15 for more activities that can be combined with Spanish. As such the term “Spanish Village” was born. We offer all levels of Spanish according to CEFR (The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment). This divides learners into three broad divisions which can be divided into six levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2). Regarding the classes, the Spanish Village includes: • D.E.L.E. exam possibilities at all levels (A1 – C2) • Individual classes as well as for groups up to 20 people • Taught by the University of Cádiz at Campus El Sabio • Official ECTS Credits. 15 hours equals 1 ECTS • Diploma Courses of:

60 hours in two – six weeks (4 ECTS)

120 hours in four – ten weeks (8 ECTS)

450 hours in one semester (30 ECTS)

• Official Diplomas from the University of Cádiz • Diploma of Approval (for those pass the final exam) • Diploma of Participation (for those who participate but do not take or pass the final exam) • The method is focused on practical application from a functional and communicative perspective

Location and How to Get Here

You can fly to Jerez from London and several other cities, and the airport is situated just over 10 kilometres from the study centre • The airports of Seville, Gibraltar and Malaga are also good options if you fly in from overseas. There are both buses and trains from Seville and Malaga to Jerez • From Madrid and Barcelona there are both buses and trains, the former 3 1/2 hour by train • If you come by road, you will find us on Road N-IV, Calle Alemania 2 (next to Sherry Golf), just south of the city centre • If you are coming in your own car, there are ample parking spaces outside, and we have an underground garage with a capacity of 40 cars
