CLK is an average joe guy who had a passion around me who set a good example and made it into a business. I for music, it runs in the family. thought you know what, that’s what I want to do as a career. Who is CLK?

Why did you choose the DJ Name CLK? Why not AMG or M3 haha.

You run a monthly over 25s night every 2nd Saturday of the month, tell us a bit about why you made it an over 25’s?

Foolish girl, nonsense.. I can’t answer that question, I really can’t. I promised myself I wouldn’t because it’s quite embarrassing. Back in 2005 we decided to go for the mature market so they can apOh come on, I want to know what it is. I’ll phone you tomorrow haha. preciate certain tracks and music. So the other interesting thing is that you have a DJ School and you a couple years before that and one of the heads Reggie Styles put my name forward for it. He help me out a lot by putting my name forward and are a teacher, tell us a bit about that? that created a whole new life and career for me. Base Lounge was a live The reason why I set up is because I had some mentors who used to show with singers and artist, I was in charge of the pre party, after party teach me a lot of skills, well respected DJ’s on the scene who used take and intermissions. It was my job to entertain the crowd which generally time out and tell me how to do stuff over the phone. I always said a lot of was media folk who were very very particular about what they want to people want to DJ but don’t know how and need some to tell them. So I hear. I got to meet a lot of stars, the likes of Shaggy, Amy Winehouse thought you know what, which way can I do it.. Setting up a DJ school, when she was still alive. Did some DJ work for Lemar so when ever he going into centers, youth centers, colleges, projects and getting people to did live TV shows I was his DJ in the background. There’s loads of actually do it. As well as DJing they need other skills, they need to know people, Dizzee Rascal, Sean Paul who performed at Sound on a Sunday. how to speak to club managers, how to promote themselves, how to do I’ve opened up for Kelly Rowland when she did a tour in the UK, Chris basic accounting and things like that. That’s the purpose of the DJ school. Brown concert I did the pre party and after party for that, a lot of stars. Do you cuss people if they get it wrong?

So CLK you finger dance on the decks but the question is can you Batte Ravanne?

Not really, you can’t because everyone has to learn. But it depends who the person is, if it’s someone who’s a bit of a doughnut.. If it’s the class Nope, i’m not musical instrumentally gifted. It’s more turntable scratching clown then I have no sympathy, I go full steam ahead. and mixing. So If I was in your class I'd get it?

What’s your favorite Mauritian Phrase?

Yea of course you would haha.

Ayo mama. I was the guy who basically started that. When the Mauritian parties first started I thought to myself in the clubs people say ‘Oli Oli Oli.. Lows and High of being a DJ? Oi Oi Oi’, so what am I going to say on the mic that’s an equivalent to that. So I decided to say on the mic ‘If your having a good time tonight The lows are late nights and your social life. When your first starting up say Ayo mama’ and it just caught on. I’ve even heard mc’s try to copy it, and all your friends are raving with you at the same time and they are but I can get that copyrighted because on recording it’s me who started used to raving it’s all fun. But as you go through the years people don’t that haha. want to go out as much, so then it’s not like a chore but your going to a rave with less numbers then you were before. It kills your social life, say What is your most embarrassing moment? for example one of you guys were having a party, I'd have to come and leave early because I'd have work after so that’s a bit of a minus side of it, I’ve got loads. There’s an artist ermmm no I can’t say that, it’s too but I chose to do this for a living and everybody has to work, it pays my embarrassing. Ok ok I'll tell you. You know Teedra Moses and that song bills I don’t do it for fun. ‘Just wanna be your Girl’, when she performed her song at Base lounge I The highs would be the atmosphere of the crowd when they are feeling walked up to said ‘Yea your Teedra Moses, what you saying, I'm the DJ, what your doing. If theirs a tune that I could play for one particular person sounded like you were singing that song to me’. that’s going to take their mid of all their problems, worries and stress I'd Hahahahahahahahahahaahah.. What did she say to you? get a buzz of that. Ohh you so funny, you the DJ you playing some good songs in her Min Frier or Dir riz frier? Min Frier.. Then again I'm partial to a bit of both. La sauce lai as well yea?

American accent. I tell you I was on cloud nine, you ain’t printing that are you. Course not!! Favorite Mauritian Dish?

No it’s not you know. I’m not a big fan, i’d rather just have the min frier by Favorite Mauritian dish would definitely be Roti avec curry poul. itself or a dir riz frier from the Chinese shop with some of their own bbq sauce. Here’s a scenario, say your at a party, it’s a hard crowd, what tune would you drop to get the vibe and party started? Where is the family from in Mauritius? That’s a hard one, a very very hard one. But let’s just say it’s a club night, Rose Hill and Beau Bassan. a tune that always works but I can’t stand the tune is Fatman Scoop - Be You DJ’d for MTV base lounge a while back, how was that, who did faithful. Another song would be Cameo - Candy, that always gets people you meet? going, I've been playing that for way over 10-15 years. Oh wow, basically I got the job because I was with Sony BMG street team

Music is a big part of your life, describe how it make you feel and I can see, was just about to say your knuckles are looking a bit ashy there. what it does for you? It pays my bills haha. Music has given me a career, it’s given me an angle to relate to the younger generation, it’s given me tools where I can actually look at past icons like Jazzy B and see people who have taken a genre of music and taken it mainstream. The likes of Sean Paul, you can say to anyone around the world and they will know who he is.. Same as Notorious B.I.G, 2Pac. When I do mentoring speaking in colleges to teach people, I always tell them about the 50 Cent and buying the water company. Music is a business that people can make money out of and make wise investments. Music has also brought different cultures together and you could even say that it has created peace. Look at the concerts back in the day like Live Aid and Part in the Park which helped people. Music to me means everything.

Is there anything we can expect from you in the future? When I set out to do this whole DJ business, I set myself a list of goals. First thing was to have a residency at a club night and I did that. Second was to DJ live on TV for an artist and i’ve done that as well. Back in the day growing up there was a party that MTV used to do called the Grind and the Lick parties and I thought you know what, i’d love to DJ for MTV and now i’ve done that so there’s a lot of things that i’ve ticked off my list. Concerts, i’ve done a lot of concerts and one of the main things was I said I wanted to travel the world Djing and not trying to sound big headed but i’ve done that already. There was a lot of things I set out to do and fortunately i’ve been able to do it already. I look at it as a business and see it as work, i’ve traveled the world djing to countries that i’ve never even heard of. People think it’s a glamorous lifestyle and it’s not, you arrive, hotel, sound check, back to the hotel, to the club, back to the hotel then home, didn’t really like that life.

Serato’s or decks? I’m a die hard vinyl man, but I've got so many vinyl’s that I don’t touch no more. So I'd say Serato just because it’s made life a hell of a lot easier. I can walk into places without my knuckles scrapping the floor and I don’t need 10 people carrying my boxes into clubs, it’s just a laptop in my bag, sorted.

Where would of been the best place that you had ever been to and played at? I did a 5000 capacity venue in Morocco, it was like and open air club and it was packed. It had a nice vibe and great atmosphere, that was one of my best gigs. I did like an hours work and it was like a months If you wasn’t working in music, what would you see yourself salary so that gig was definitely one of my best. Following on with my list of goals, I wanted to create an old skool night where I could play the doing? tunes that I loved and wanted to hear which is over 25‘s event ‘That Up to now people always ask me that question but I can’t answer it. I’d Thing’. probably just be going from job to job because all I see is a lot of people So now I'm searching for the next big thing to do. who have a chosen a different path to me, I'm not knocking it at all, but a lot of people are being made redundant and I would of been one of You can keep up to date with DJ CLK’s movement via the those people. I’d definitely need to do a job where I was interacting with following; people, I wouldn’t say retail but maybe something in sales.

Weight Training and Weight Loss

We all want to burn more fat for weight loss, body shaping, better health or for sporting purposes. Trim those glutes, eradicate that cellulite, bring in those love handles, flatten that belly; its all part of the trimmer, slimmer physique that many of us desire. In the main, people will practice cardiovascular activities and forget about weight bearing exercises when it comes to burning body fat. But cardiovascular activity combined with weight training will result in much more effective fat loss. This is because cardiovascular exercises alone will raise muscle metabolism during the activity and for a short time after the exercise session. Weight training, on the other hand, will raise your metabolism during the exercise and for a long time after the exercise session.

Anybody who debates the fact that weightbearing exercises help people lose weight and fat should lift weights continuously for one hour and see their heart rate go through the roof. Simply look at athletes who specialise in short, intense bursts of energy and you still see that they are very low in body fat. The point is to combine a weight lifting routine with a good cardiovascular workout to increase muscle metabolism and total fat burning ratio. At Darren Gray Health & Fitness we integrate a diverse range of exercise disciplines and methods to ensure that your body is always being challenged. Designed to be progressive, our personal training will provide you with the tools you need to maximise your capacity to burn body fat. We also make sure that you are not just leaner, but stronger, more flexible, more

stable and agile. We provide the most comprehensive service available to tailor your training, nutrition and lifestyle that will get the results you deserve. An important factor to consider when trying to lose weight is that lots of muscle mass can be lost as a result. As muscle mass will keep your metabolism high, try to avoid quick weight loss through miracle diets or starvation. This weight loss will be regained just as quickly. Instead, opt for a gradual fat loss routine by combining weight training and cardiovascular activities, and allow muscle mass to build up and increase your metabolism. Results may take a little longer, but they will last for a longer period of time. Darren Gray

Why should she deal with an abortion alone?

A

bortion is a contentious issue in itself which will affect 1 in 3 women by the age of 45, add a very strong culture to the equation and it becomes a complicated mess. But why is it that some of the female population avoid going to their parents for support during such a difficult time? Surely their parents will love them no matter what, right? Sian was 20 years old when she experienced the whole unplanned pregnancy ordeal, practically alone. It was her first and only pregnancy to date and she was in emotional turmoil. “Everyone wants their first pregnancy to be with the One and get all excited about it. No one wants it to be a horrible ‘problem’ that has to be ‘dealt with’. It’s a life at the end of the day.” She was in a difficult relationship and knew that her boyfriend was cheating on her. She decided that she wasn’t ready to become a parent and went to her ex for support.

Shortly after going through with the termination Sian suffered from Post Abortion Stress Syndrome (PASS) and broke into fits of uncontrollable crying spells and self-blaming.

On the day of her termination a nurse took Sian into a small office with plastered walls of pro-choice posters, to ask her if she was sure about going through with the procedure and what her reasons were.

“I felt so alone and really did want my parents’ support because I was so angry and emotional. They must of know something had happened but I just couldn’t face telling them.

Her initial thoughts were, ‘can I go through with this? It’s going to a baby soon- my baby.’

“I felt like such a failure and tainted. I told a few close friends but made sure I kept it out of the Mauritian community.

Choking back the growing need to cry, she explained that she was still a student and that she couldn’t support a child at that time.

“As soon as one person knows, everyone knows and I didn’t want that.”

But should it be like that? Shouldn’t girls feel like they can go to their par“It was such a horrible decision to make ents no matter what? Facts: Abortion rates went down to 196,082 in 2011, from 196,109 the previous year. The statistics collected in 2011 show that under half of abortions (49%) were to women with partners while 26% were to single women and 16% of abortions occurred within marriage. The numbers of abortions to girls under 16 went down too, 3,258 in 2011, down from 3,718 the previous year. Does culture make it difficult to depend on parents? Growing up in Britian is brilliant to say the least- I love how we have four seasons, how we love to complain about the weather- even on a sunny day! And how we’re never happy with the government. Growing up in Britian with a Mauritian background sometimes proves to be challenge. I’m 22 years old and I’ve reached that age where my parents are talking to me about getting married and moving outonly problem, I’m single and the stress of ‘Oh my God, I’m 22 and getting old- I need a boyfriend’ is hitting my hard.

brick road that I’ve been following anyways, but after coming back from holiday in Italy I’ve started opening my eyes to a whole other type of potential lifepartner; maybe I should stop... a chance and start broadening my horizons. Yeah, okay the culture may be different but I like learning and exploring different cultures and I’m in awe of anyone who can speak a different language, especially French... or Spanish... or Italian... lush!

have to end, whereas the Muslim one was willing to covert (even though I never asked him to) just for us to be together. Maybe I attract the anomalie? Then why is it that some of the older generation are convinced that if a non-Muslim girl marries a Muslim boy that he’ll convert her and she won’t have a say in it? And why are some so against Creole Mauritians? But then again, I’m a bit oblivious to what gets said about Hindus so who knows why people think that too? Is it because they’ve seen it happen before or had bad experiences with these people? But surely you can’t rule out a whole group just because of one individual. Maybe it’s just one of those things that no matter how much you try, youll just never be able to change their thinking?

I’ve never been too brilliant about discussing relationships with my family, even though I am one of five and quite close to my sisters, so everytime relationships and marriage gets brought up I decide to test the boundaries.

So I asked my Mum how she would feel if I was to end up marrying a European and to my utter shock she said she’d be fine, ‘We’re not always going to be here Mansha, so whoever makes you happy, that’s your choice because you’ll be the one living with them.’ Little bit morbid but okay, brilliant, that’s the green light to the Europeans then. The younger generation don’t see life like that, thank God! What’s that saying the everybody’s ranting about But what if I end up with, let’s say a Muslim or a black at the moment, you only live once, so as much as I guy? Would they be happy with that? I always find love the older generations in my family, when it comes that Mauritius have this odd prejudice against anyone to relationships, I’m a hopeless romantic than a that isn’t the same ethnic origin/ religion as practical person so whoever I end up with, as much as themselves. The amount of times my Tamil friends their opinions and approval matters to me, I’m going to do what makes me happy. have said to me, ‘you’re a stingy Malbar’.

My parents are quite religious and would ideally like me to marry a Hindu but to me that doesn’t really matter. Culture is the biggy in my life, if you’re Mauritian you may have a chance. That’s the yellow

I’ve been with both a Muslim Mauritian and a Twitter @mansha_haurdhan Christian Mauritian and contrary to popular belief the Chrisitian one was more religious and adamant that if I Twiiter hashtag: #MCM wasn’t willing to convert then the relationship would

I’ve had about three British-born Mauritian boyfriends but they all clearly failed for different reasons, two were because of religion and the last was because he had double-standards, major no-no in my books. Relationships should be equal and none of that, ‘you can’t do this but I’m allowed to’ nonsense.

Go Go Gadget! The Smartphone war between two tech giants intensifies.

iPhone 5 v.s Samsung S3

S

o, let’s begin. The phones, as we can see from sales figures, are hugely popular. The iPhone 5 got more than five million pre-orders in its first three days, and Samsung expects to have sold 30 million Galaxy S3 units by the end of the year, an unheard of number outside of the iPhone. It’s one of the best examples of what Google’s Android operating system has to offer. The iPhone 5 already sold more than 5 million handsets in its first three days on the market, but how does the much-lauded 4-inch screen hold up to, say, its predecessor the iPhone 4, or competitor Samsung Galaxy S3? To help you make a decision you’ll live with for the next two years, we’ve distilled our extensive hands-on time with both devices down into the ultimate iPhone 5 vs. Galaxy S3 comparison. SCREENS The iPhone 5 has a 4”, 1,136x640p resolution screen that’s LED, IPS and TFT. It’s housed in Gorilla Glass. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 4.8” 1,280x720p Super AMOLED screen that’s protected by Gorilla Glass 2. The iPhone 5 is easier to handle with one hand, but the S3 is way better for browsing and films, so it’s a draw here. However according to the folks over at DisplayMate, the S3 deserves an extra point as its display is more “high tech” than the iPhone 5. The S3 shows the full gamut of NTSC versus only 72 percent in the case of the iPhone 5. Again the iPhone 5 doesn’t offer anything special. HD is common in devices of today; just take a look at the Lumia 920 from Nokia with 332ppi and a display resolution of 1280 x 768. It beats both these devices. STORAGE iPhone comes with various storage levels 16, 32 or 64 GB. The GS3 is available in 16GB or 32GB options, plus it has a microSD slot, which allows for up to 64GB, so the potential for more storage space is there on the GS3. Most people don’t need to go past 64 GB, or even that high, especially with so much data stored in the cloud these days (For example, all your music could be stored online in iTunes or Google Music. Both handsets feature 1GB of main RAM in the UK, though the US version has 2GB, as does the Galaxy Note 2 worthy of 2GB but Apple may argue it is unnecessary to run its

iOS 6 operating system. Both devices are going to be available with a variety of internal storage options, with 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB versions on offer. The Galaxy S3 also sports a microSD slot, allowing further expansion currently of up to 64GB. Quite why anyone would need 128GB in their phone is beyond us, but with no iPhone 5 128GB currently, the choice is yours. 4G The big news about the iPhone 5 is that it’s capable of accessing the 4G networks. That is big news for Apple fans, which now will get faster downloads and uploads. But as Apple’s competitors are quick to point out, they’ve been using the faster 4G LTE networks for over a year now, so in this area Apple is just catching up to the Android competition.

eard about the opportunity to be or all of the four ceremonies for the and Paralympics I made sure that I To not have been part of a once in a ent in London would have been a sin. I ugh friends who were already on the t would be an immense project to be t you do not realise until you see the nteers, thousands of them, in front of g for your instructions and buzzing siasm, that it really hits you! I had to that volunteers knew what they were ere they should be standing for the erial shots you saw e.g the peace sign HS sign in the opening ceremony and I performing in all four ceremonies e amazing costumes.

ning Ceremony was the most e for me, as we had a lot more time to nd get to create proper friendships olunteers. Some travelled day and et to rehearsals and the stories they re amazing. I would say that working lunteers was the best part along with work with an amazing team of If it were not for the volunteer’s mitment, working through really harsh conditions and offering valuable on performance and choreographic nts, what you saw on the TV would had such an impact. When we all

started we were privileged to watch a VT of Danny Boyles vision. He admitted that most people thought it was not possible but once he had the volunteers and the Mass Team on his side we made sure we were going to give the world the best opening ceremony the world had ever seen. I looked after the men who came out of the tree. We called them the Warriors and they were such a great bunch of men. On the night my colleague Vicki Igbokwe and I were so pumped with excitement. The countdown was happening on your screens and we were underneath the tree wishing our Warriors luck and at the same time saying goodbye. It was rather emotional. I was on the sidelines in costume making sure that the volunteers were performing and that all the turf you saw was taken off properly so the massive chimneys’ and the Olympic rings went up safely. We knew that the audience would love that moment but I did not realise how emotional it would be for all the cast. Tears, lots of tears on that night especially when the cauldron was lit. It was such an achievement and all the hard work was definitely worth it.

Beckham. I got to watch the rehearsals for the closing at the Dagenham site, which was amazing as it felt like a private show. Dancing along to the Spice girls, George Michael, Jessie-J, Taio Cruz, Tinnie Tempah, Coldplay and many more. My team had the privileged of seeing the rehearsals for the lighting of the cauldron. They usually rehearsed at night so the media didn’t leak anything. One of the hardest parts of the job was saving the surprise. My husband would ask how was your day and I would just say, ”yeah it was fine”, but I would be wanting to tell him everything. I even got see all the Olympians, I was mostly excited when I saw Ussain Bolt and the Mauritian team. I danced a little sega when they went pass and they were kind of shocked!

The above was exciting but what was most fulfilling was teaching and directing the volunteers, most who had never performed before, to perform to 80,000 people in the stadium and not to mention the millions at home. You cannot imagine the roar of the crowd, it is mind blowing, and that is what they will take away with them. They were part of the I thought that the pinnacle of the job would have biggest show in the world and I am so proud to been watching the A-list stars. I did get very say that I, a British Mauritian, was part of it too. close to Jay-Z and Rihanna, spoke to Russell Brand, who is really nice, bumped into Chris Martin and was inches away from David 25

Sweetcorn & Chilli Cheese Empanadas

A snack filled with creamy cheese, sweetcorn, a hint of chilli & crisp pastry - taking you straight to the sunny climes of South America

Empanadas de Choclo (corn empanadas) are very popular in South America, due to the maize that are grown in those countries. The corn empanadas were usually filled with a creamy, cheese and sweetcorn sauce. I’ve decided to make mine with a hint of chilli, to liven them up. Choosing also to use ready made shortcrust pastry, a quick and easy option when your craving that snack!

Instructions Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/ gas mark 6 In a bowl combine the drained sweetcorn, chopped chilli, spring onion and grated cheese, season with salt and pepper Roll out the pastry or if already pre-rolled use a pastry cutter to cut out circles in the pastry. Brush edges of the circles with a little of the beaten egg, then spoon a couple of teaspoonful's of filling mixture onto each. Fold over one half of the pastry and seal by pinchin g or crimping the edges with your fingers. Do this until you have all your small pastyshaped empanadas. Arrange on a baking parchment lined baking sheet, brush with the rest of the egg and scatter with sesame seeds if you wish. Cover and chill for at least 20 mins before baking. Put them in your oven for about 20 minutes of till the pastry turns a golden brown colour, take out serve with salad, alone of with some spicy dips!
