The explosive growth of electronic communication and social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter has undeniably altered the way in which many individuals communicate. For adolescents and young adults, Facebook has become a daily fabric. According to national surveys conducted by the Pew Internet and American Life Project, 73 % of teens and preteens (12 – 17 years of age) use social networking sites.

About 51 % of the young people check social networking sites daily, and 22% check more than 10 times per day. Experts are uncertain of the current benefits/threats of social media. While facebook has the potential to provide great social satisfaction, it may also increase risks of cyber bullying and “sexting”. Facebook allows users to customize their profile with information about relationships, activities, likes and dislikes, and numerous photographs of themselves, all of which are visible and available for comments by others. These can be positive but also negative. Source: University of Texas

Connecting with my Mauritian roots

I

've always loved cooking and baking since I was little. Even at university, whenever I was hungry I'd quickly whip up a batch of pancakes to satisfy my grumbling tummy but I've never really attempted to make anything that's Mauritian, I've always left that up to my parents, mainly my Dad- sorry Ma!

But now that I'm reaching the age where I can no longer deny that I AM an adult, I feel that I should really start learning the Mauritian ways. I love most of the food from the Island, the Vindaye, the Dhall Puri, the Halim but I'm not the biggest fan of fish curry. Don't get me wrong, I love my seafood, what Islander doesn't, but I don't do too brilliantly with spices... Yes I know, I really should be able

to hack them but whenever spices come near my mouth I turn into a eye-watering, mouth-erupting-volcanic mess. I've asked my Dad to teach me the tricks of the trade but whenever it comes to him cooking, I end up distracted somewhere in the house either blogging or playing with our pet rabbit, Coco. Maybe I've been a bit lazy and I need to be serious about this. I've cooked food from other countries before. I've made gnocchi with pesto and fried chicken in a garlic sauce, duck in plum sauce with dauphinoise potatoes, jerk chicken, rice and peas, I've even made sushi! But never have I even attempted to cook a basic Mauritian dish like rougialle, which is quite simply a Mauritian tomatobased sauce.

spectacular, bless my Mum, she does try but it's just not as good as my Dad's. Who knows though, maybe my Dad will teach me a thing or two and I'll do a Shelina on him and Masterchef his dishes. Since wining Masterchef food from the small, volcanic Island has become better know in Britain and my friends are dying to try food from my Homeland. I better start getting my chef whites on and shadow my Dad in the kitchen then I'll be able to dazzle them with my brilliant Mauritian masterpieces... Here's hoping anyway! To be honest, I think men are better cooks mainly because my Dad's food is pretty

of two nights.
