Digital Design - Module 01 Semester 1, 2018 Xiaohan Mei 873713 Li Han Studio17
Week One
Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.
According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum) Sign is just a dynamic, an abstract thing, and it can be divided into three types, they are symbols, icons, indexs icon is a thing with shape, to show materility index means a sign of measurement campared to sign, symbol is similar to sign, but much more formal but symbol can be classified to sign diagrams can be defined as a map or something to represent idea and information.

Week One
Precedent Analysis
West elevation:
NE isometric:
This image show the west condition of this pavilion
with the model it self, the elevation of west, north, and south also the section is shown
Reference: https://libeskind.com/publishing/serpentine-gallery/
North elevation:
south elevation:
it show the entry or exit of the structure from the view in north direction
it show the entry or exit of the structure from the view in south direction
From the NE isometric, I first trace the north, south, west elevation, and the section, they are the key elemnts to make the model, to line the same point in different view, I can find the height of different point, therefore it will make me easier to model it, and the unfolded plan can also help me understand, I make the physical model at first to help me understand how the pavilion actually looks like.

WEEK 2 - PRECEDENT ISOMETRIC Week Two
Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)
According to Herzberger, one object can be used in many ways, it should be designed in affordance way, the way to use the object can change by environment, so the designer should design an object with muti-functions. For example, what I am working on this moudle, Linberskind, it formed by a fold structure, so there are many hollow spaces, as a result, they can be used as a exit or entry, and the overlaps between the uper structure and deck will form a wall to loose the human stream, also they can be walls to seperate the inter space.

Week Two
Isometric
North-west Steel Board structure This is the north-west Steel board strcture, the reason why I choose this kind of form to make people understand the relationship between each elements-main structure, steel board structure and the ground condition, and I use the sun to show how the pavilion works with the sun. For the circulation: because eash pathway of through the pavilion can be way to entry and to go out, the further to the entry, the fewer people will be, and the center area will the most important place,as it is the place where human stream begin to divergent. For threshold: I seperate the model into 4 parts, the first is the outer steel cover, which is used to seperate out space to the inter private area, next picture is the steel main structure, it can be seen that the connection between inside and outside, and it will help people understand the threshold, the third one is the steel board arrangement, it clearly shows the relationship between the main structureand and the out steel board, the last one is the ground condition, it shows how the whole structure is fitted on the plan, and there are three overlap between, this is important, because it is the factor to influence people walk in the inter space. And by modeling this pavilion, I know how the building influence the people moving, and also each part of the tructure have its own function, this concept will help me in later design work.

Week Two Diagrams
Circulation The first two pictures show the main structure of the model, the first one is the steel board arragement, the second one is what the ground like, the last one is about the circulation, because eash pathway of through the pavilion can be way to entry and to go out, I use the line with arrows on its both sides, as it shows above, there are many blue bubbles, the size of the bubbles represents the density of people, as it shows on the circulation map, the further to the entry, the fewer people will be , and the larget bubble means the core area of the plan, because it is the place where all the ways get togther, and as a result, it will be the place with the largest density of people.
Threshold As it shows above, I seperate the model into 4 parts, the first is the outer steel cover, which is used to seperate out space to the inter private area, next picture is the steel main structure, it can be easily seen that the connection between inside and outside, and it will help people understand the threshold, the third one the steel board arrangement, it clearly shows the relationship between the main structureand and the out steel board, the last one is the ground

condition, it shows how the whole structure is fitted on the plan, and there are three overlap between, this is important, because it is the factor to influence people walk in the inter space.
Appendix
Process
Unfolded plan:
Physical model:
It is a pavilion which can be imagine as a folded structure in a abstract way, and with the fold ed plan, I can fold it up to help me understand the structure
I print the unfolded plan, and cut it off, with the pictures from internet, to fold it up, although it takes a lot of time to make it, through the process, I can understand how the pavilion was built, and it helps me in later rhino modeling step.
SE isometric: After I finish folding the physical model, I trace the north, south, west elevation, and the section, to make sure the height, and use the physical model to help me to model.

Appendix Process
Then I trace the steel board structure to make it cleaner, and it will be easier to
After I finish the structure modeling, I find that the outer shell is covered by steel board, and the size of each boboard is around 3000*600, so with the size of it I cover
sweep the steel board structure later
the board on each side of the Pavilion.
Next, I make the steel frame structure of the whole Pavilion, and it will be much clearer to make people understand how it really looks like in the structrue view.
8
With the structure in the last step, and The I sweep all the steel board structure, this image will show how the main steel structure is connect with the steel board on it surface in a clear way.
Appendix
Process
As it shows above, I make the deck plan, and at the same time I hide the layer for the steel board to make it easier to show the relationship between the uper structure with the ground condition.
Within the circle shows on the image above, there are three overlaps between the up structure and deck, the overlaps are really import, as they will influence the walking path of people, also I hide the layer of steel board structure to make it easier to see.
These are some rendering stuff which I did in the first week.
