PHYSICAL ASPACTS The Old Quadrangle is the oldest and the most iconic building at the university of Melbourne Parkville Campus, it is the heart of the camps. It was originally built in 1854, when a building was composed of two-storey rectangular forms surrounding an inner courtyard on its western, northern and western sides. Its southern side open up to the The courtyard has featured Camellia bushes continually since 1860. This heritage-listed building terminates the main axis, called Main Drive, which is aligned with the main gate and the entrance into the university from Grattan Street. My first idea is to design a series of open space that could linking the surrounding historicial buildings. The total area of the open space is about 550 m2. My first design idea is to fully use the open space. The length of the site is 24m the width is 22m. Tasmanian sandstone was originally used. When I enter this site I feel bigger than it looks. Carefully looking. The Gothic style buildings look gorgeous. The blue lines show the distance from the old quadrangle to the surrounding buildings, that around 100m. I use three different colours to indicate my feeling of these buildings. For example, Union House makes me feel relax, Baillieu Library is more academic and Old Arts is historical.

NATURAL ASPECTS Building The Old Quadrangle plays the role of transfer station in Uni Camps. The three colours show the levels of the noise. Personally I think the largest noise is coming from the northern (Union House), southern (main entrance of the University and the city). The wind is mainly coming from north and west.

The inner courtyard of the old quadrangle is the beginning point of the university’s graduation process. My second design idea is to create a series of open spaces that will make the process ordered and interesting. The style of the space will be a combinition of history and morden

But few of them would like to slow down or spend there free time in the old quadrangle. It may be because in the winter there is not a place to keep out the wind and the building style (columns) make people feel lack of sense of security or warm feeling. My third designing idea is to build a new landmark that will give people the chance to enjoy this site have the chance to sit down chatting with others. I will add the water element to my designing. If possible to give a clear awareness of the surrounding environment.

In my direct observation I find a phenomenon that most people will choose the red route, few people choose the yellow one and only 2 or 3 people choose the green one. Although the left route and the right route are same distance to the union house, most people prefer the right one. The reason is that the left entrance is towards another square (old physics) that is not as direct as the other. Several people were standing in the corners of the quarter chatting with them friends. I notice that some of them look confused in this area I think its because there is no obvious marks to show which entrance is towards where, and there are four entrance.
