DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: Dory, the short-memoried regal blue tang, charms me with her omnipresent positivity. Especially inspired by the scene where, despite danger, she bounces on a swarm of jellyfish, I wish to capture her radiant character with this chair which is named after her. With Dory, the chair, I want to provide the busy city dwellers a comfortable seat and a touch of cheerful spirit right in their homes. JAPANESE DESIGN ELEMENTS: Craftsmanship, humor, simplicity. MATERIALS: Aluminum, steel, nylon. WEIGHT: 23 lb. FILM INSPIRATION: Finding Nemo (2003).

3

THEME: I want the theme of this chair to celebrate the bouncy spirit of Dory, the shortmemoried regal blue tang, who pushes the story along with her radiant personality. VALUES: Comfort, simplicity and delight. GOALS: Candor, simplicity, delight, and naturalness. OBJECTIVES: 1. To have a clean, refreshing and simple design. 2. To combine materials in a natural and unforced way. 3. To work with the human ergonomics and design a comfortable chair.

VISUAL MODEL:

The visual model explores the aesthetics of having spirals on the chair legs as well as simply straight legs. 47

ADDITIONAL SKETCHES:

After the visual model, I realized that the loops in the middle of the legs were huge and visually distracting. I resorted to more sketches of leg variations to represent Dory’s bouncy character. 48

FUNCTIONAL MODEL:

The functional model tests mainly the structure of the chair - the comfort of the back curve and whether the height fits the seaters. 49

ADDITIONAL SKETCHES:

After talking with numerous companies and skilled craftsmen, it was determined that, unfortunately, making the spirally legs is highly economically unsuitable for just one chair. I had to explore more on the legs while preserving the unique and bouncy spirit of the whole chair. 53
