Every girl’s dorm room gets dirty and messy, but not everyone has space for a vacuum!
This is for you.
What are the problems you have with vacuum cleaners? (Survey taken by college females)
25 They can’t get to the corners. 20 15
The intertwined cord is annoying. The size is too huge. They look really bad.

I’ve no place to keep it. My space is tight. I have to constantly get lower to the ground so that the vacuum sucks more stuff up. Others
“Too expensive. I am better than them.” “I can never find the on switch on the new fancy dysons.” “Cords don’t reach all the way across the room!” “It’s hard to wind up the cords AND fit everything into the closet when I’m done.”
College girls love having clean dorm rooms and apartments, but it can be difficult to find the right vacuum to help them with cleaning. Central vacuum systems are clearly not feasible for a college setting. Stick vacuums are too tall for convenient storage, and handheld vacuums need the users to constantly bend down for floor cleaning. Is there a way to have the best of both worlds?
Task analysis
Attached handle stick is inflexible.
Vacuum body is as long as her calves.
Messy wire.
The best one I found on the market is Bissell 3-in-1 vacuum, 38b1l. It can be transformed from a handheld vacuum into a stick one by simply adding a handle stick. Even then, it still has some shortcomings for a college girl who prefers tidiness, order, as well as speed.
Simplicity
Telescoping
Nature
The simplicity of design by Philips, the mechanism in telescoping devices, and the liveliness of nature inspired the design.
Handheld, Compact
Stick, Stand-up
Extendable, Telescopic
The main advantage of a stick vacuum is its long handle that allows the user to clean the floor standing up. A handheld vacuum is handy when the user cleans tables or couches, a process requiring a short handle. Therefore, a telescoping handle comes into the picture. Cords are also eliminated because vacuuming one or two rooms does not require too much electricity input.

Prototypes were made for numerous user-testings, and the most ergonomic design with the right size for most girls’ hands was further developed into the final model.
Handheld Vacuum
Stick Vacuum
Now the girls can transform a handy vacuum into a stick vacuum conveniently and not break their backs anymore! The cordless feature also gives them so much more mobility.

Often annoyed by the accidentally messed up pieces in your almost winning chess games?
Don’t blame the kids.
THE LOOK Inspired by another classic game - playing cards, I decide to give this chess set a flat appearance. By having slots in the board, the chess set reaches a creative solution to my design problem how to ensure the chess pieces are securely placed on the chess board.

How do you always keep your favorite song with you?
A fifteen-second clip of my favorite song, “In The Sun, made into aluminum jewelry.
Languid Setting Sun
Innocent Girl in the Field
Winding Country Road
MOOD “In The Sun“ by Joseph Arthur makes me think of a languid setting sun, an innocent girl and winding country roads that are intertwined just like memory. Overall, it feels serene, peaceful, and somewhat melancholic.
FORM FOLLOWS FEELING The song is soothing and soft, so curves dominate the necklace. While some curves describe the winding country road, others mimic rays of sunlight pouring down. Positive and negative spaces intertwine to give an illusion of space and depth.

MODELING WITH ALIAS AND SOLIDWORKS The 2D drawing is translated into a 3D model in Alias and SolidWorks. Most of the surfaces are designed in Alias, and fillets are added later in Solidworks for easier casting in the aluminum foundry.
The final design is further sanded by hand. Part of it is highly polished to mimic the continuous flow of sunlight while other parts remain textured, echoing the rugged earth. The whole design hums a languish country melody naturally.
