BACKPACK DESIGN Task: To design cool and interesting backpacks. What I learned: To design with current technology in mind. Also, to render more effectively in Illustrator.

IDEA SELECTION Ideas of prelinminary sketches are further detailed and markered to show three-dimensional forms on the backpacks.

PLAN OF BACKPACK The next step is to figure out the relative proportions of the backpack. This orthographic view of the backpack is done in Illustrator.

EXPLORE AT NIGHT The final design is rendered in Illustrator and touched up in Photoshop. It suggests the incorporation of wearable technology in consumer products in the future. With fun backpacks like this, you’ve got the highlight everywhere you go.

VANS 速 CLASSIC Task: To design a pair of classic Vans速 KVD with two types of materials that are very different from each other. What I Learned: To render with both Photoshop and Illustrator

MATERIAL PHASE Different materials were tested on the classic KVD shape while consumers’ comfort of feet were considered. Some iconic VansŽ patterns are also kept for better brand recognition.

Light sheer of silk chiffon allows better breathing at feet and magnifies feminity, while showing the inside checkered pattern

Irregular checkers spring from the classic Vans checkerboard pattern

Orthographic View

Canvas with checkered pattern is attached to silk chiffon, creating an exciting airy see-through effect Basic shoe shape and sole material are maintained

WAVY LAVENDER The KVD has an elegant long profile and slightly narrow fit that can go classy and casual. An irregular checkered pattern gives checkerboard lovers a refreshing change. The chiffon adds more ventilation to the shoe as well. Key words: comfortable, stylish, breathes well

CHESS SET Task: To design at least three chess pieces that have a cohesive family of form What I learned: To quickly sketch for idea generation, to manipulate materials using lasercutting and thermal-forming, to model in SolidWorks, and to digitally render in Alias

FORM EXPLORATION Initial rough and quick sketches are used to explore family of form for the chess pieces. In the process, a sense of balance and elegence is emphasized.

GAME PLAN The final design is drawn using traditional medium to show all six pieces in the chess set. Effect of the mix of walnut and maple bases is shown through the use of different shades of grey.

LASER CUTTING Both wooden chess pieces and their acrylic boarders are laid out in Illustrator and laser-cut in the Rapid Prototyping Center. The acrylic strips are later heated with my hair straightener and bent to the desired round corners.

VIRTUAL PLAN Chess pieces without acrylic boarders are made in SolidWorks and rendered in Alias.

REAL PIECES Three representative pieces are chosen to show a combination of clear acrylic and wood (maple and walnut). The chess board has slots to secure the flat chess pieces. This adds a sense of playfulness to the whole chess set.

CHESS IN PLAY This chess set allows passionate chess players to play it even in moving cars as the slots hold the pieces securely. It can also withstand up to 90 degrees of tilting without letting the pieces fall out. This new way of playing chess can be exciting!

BLING PROJECT Task: To design a piece of bling from a fifteen second sound track What I learned: To build a 3-dimensional digital model with reference to a 2-demensional sketch in Alias, and to make products using industrial methods like aluminum casting

INSPIRATION The song chosen is “In The Sun“ by Joseph Arthur. In the song, the sun, winding country roads, as well as fluid curves seem to be reccuring very often. The song itself feels serene, peaceful, and somewhat melancolic.

EVOLUTION OF FORM Since the song is soothing and soft, no straight edges are employed. Instead, soft curves dominate this piece of necklace.

3D-MODELLING The design is modelled in Alias. The wire file is shown first, followed by quick colcring of the surfaces.

FINAL DESIGN The final design is casted with aluminum and hand-sanded to reach the desired finished look. Part of the necklace is highly polished while the rest remain roughly textured. The whole design hums a languish country melody.

MORE VIEWS The metal has both a solid presence and a poetic fluidity. It becomes alive on the model and seems to lock the serenity perpetually.

IN THE SUN This necklace is highly collectable. Grab it before stock runs out! To order, click here.

MORE SKETCHES! I learn fast and work with passion. At the same time, I believe in “stay humble, be nice“. Sketching out ideas and making products are my favorite things to do. I am glad that Industrial Design lets me translate ideas on paper into real things.

METAL PIN HOLE AND PIN

LEATHER

CLUTCH STYLE 1 This design focuses on simplicity and elegance. It is made from leather and decorated with a shiny pin to secure the content as well as to add class to the whole clutch. No matter whether you are an office lady or a college girl, this item is a should-have in your clutch collection.

METAL BUTTON

CLUTCH STYLE 2 This design has a soft amicable orange color. Thin straps are symmetrically located on the outside and can be adjusted according to the thickness of the clutch. It is a great choice for ladies who often carry variable amount of things in their purses. Stitches are imported from Adobe Illustrator.

HIDDEN ZIPPER ENHANCES EASY MIX-AND-MATCH OF THE HAT’S FOAM FRONT AND MESH BACK

BACK OF HAT IS KEPT CONVENTIONAL TO ALLOW GOOD AIR CIRCULATION IN HAT

TRANSPARENT FRONT FOR THE HAT TO CREATE A NEW LOOK AND BE DIFFERENT

ABUNDANT CHOICES OF COLOR TO SATISFYTHE NEED OF BUYERS WHO ARE AVID LOVERS OF COLORS

TRUCKER HATS New trucker hats are designed for cool teenagers and youths who want to make a statement with what they wear. My focus was on playing with different materials to give traditional trucker hats a fresher compoment. After all, all we want is to jump out of the boring daily cycles, right?
